I’m afraid this may be too little too late, since the EU already closed its public consultation on tobacco. The results were disappointing, since AFAIK Sweden was the only country really supporting snus. The other countries prefer to see their citizens die of smoking-related diseases rather than considering scientific evidence.
The report of the consultation is available here: http://ec.europa.eu/health/tobacco/docs/consultation\\_report\\_en.pdf. More info: http://ec.europa.eu/health/tobacco/consultations/tobacco\\_cons\\_01\\_en.htm
There is very little support in the members states for snus. Sadly, the main arguments for keeping the ban is simple scare-mongering and wild speculation into portal theories like “it will lead to smoking”. Never mind the evidence!
“A vast majority of respondents not only disagreed with the problem definition but were in favour of lifting the ban on snus.”
I have long been baffled by the weird contradiction that snus is illegal, while makla, which is much-much stronger, is legal. Personally, I think makla is revolting, but this isn’t about personal preference.
The really worrying part is that there is huge support for banning all forms of smokeless tobacco. Yep, that’s really gonna combat lung cancer. So are they actually gonna check if you’re smoking that virginia flake or illegally grinding it down to have a sniff?
