I’ve just bought myself some ingredients for making my own moustache wax. All I have is some white beeswax pellets, and some oils (argan, jojoba, and fractionated coconut - the clear liquid kind). Before I start cooking up some batches, I’m interested in hearing from any snuffers who wax their tache. Do you use hard wax or soft wax? Do you get snuff sticking to your tache? Any tips for wiping/blowing/dusting without disturbing the tache? Do you make your own wax? Anything else I’ve failed to consider? Mentioning brands of waxes won’t help me, as I’ve never used any before. I just want to shorten the learning curve as much as possible in my attempts to tame/style the tache and still enjoy pinches at my leisure. For the record, my snuff is almost exclusively English non-oiled snuffs in case that affects anything. Thanks guys.
I haven’t had a long moustache in years, but I always used pomade.
@Ubiquitous What’s pomade? How does that differ from wax? EDIT: Ahh… did a net search, and now understand. A brylcreem type stuff. Did you use snuff back then, and were there any “complications”?
No, snuff wasn’t part of my life back then. I’d imagine that you will experience problems with any product though. They are designed to stay somewhat pliable. Snuff will certainly get caught in your moustache.
Thanks for your input. I’ve now knocked up a small tester batch to play with, not just to check the flypaper effect, but also to see how well it works with the unruly moustache. It was too much wax and not enough oil (very difficult to work in), so I’ve just remelted it and thinned it out a little more.
nope snuff wasn’t a problem actually seemed to keep snuff from getting into the moustache. Like it created a layer the snuff couldn’t fall into. I used a hard wax because the soft waxs didn’t hold the curls when they got bigger. Man I miss that moustache
Nice one. Thanks Bob
I grew a moustache back just so I can start using my ylang ylang wax from Captain Fawcett again. I forgot all about it until I ordered a lil tin of WoS ylang ylang. Man, isn’t it funny how scents bring back memories.
I’m blonde and my beard is kind of a strawberry blonde…so dark snuffs do leave a mark. It looks like I dyed my stache and it’s very hard to get out. Not that I mind, at all.
I’ve used different waxes, and you could use just about anything. I read somewhere about a guy who makes his out of wax toilet seals (that’s a lot of wax and a great consistency). But why make it when you can buy great products. Check out Captain Fawcett’s. It’s kind of like the thrill of the snuff.
Also, wax usually doesn’t last me all day, especially if I’m having hot beverages. I’ve never taken wax with me to redo though. I use the wax as a “trainer” just to get my hair growing the direction I want it…I don’t use it to “style” like you would with a heavy mousse or gel. Too much wax looks weird and is uncomfortable.
You might want to try your local drug store, they probably have the clubman wax with a little comb. That wax is actually pretty good and has a nice lime fragrance.
The style in my picture was done with clubmans, a very loose wax, but I don’t typically go for curls either so a loose wax works well for me. And snuff is not a big issue. Though just accept the fact that you will always have a light dusting of snuff on your 'stache.
Thanks guys. @jbrentoniv I went the ingredient route as it’s more cost effective. Also means I can tweak it to my needs, plus knock up batches of beard oil/balm too. My local pharmacies don’t carry tache wax, so I’d have delivery costs for each order too. I do agree on the trainer use though. I found yesterday, that if I wax it up then comb it out, I get a controlled natural look rather than a scraggly mess or some plastic looking affair that looks like it came from a joke shop. I did have to pick out the odd bead of wax though. It seemed to stand up to some light snuffing with ill effect too. @Harlequin The batch I’ve knocked up is quite a firm wax, so between us it seems there’s no major issue with snuff and wax. Mission accomplished. Thanks for your input.
@50ft_trad LOL at “joke shop”. That’s exactly how it looks.
