Forgive me if there’s already a thread on this, if so mods can go ahead and delete this one, but I did a search and surprisingly didn’t find one. So what’s a snuff that doesn’t get enough love in your opinion? I’d definitely agree with SnuffySnuff that Dholakia Black is very underrated. It has the most pleasant farmyard scent, I’m going to order at least 100g next time. The only downside is that it’s a bit messy in my experience, just because the black color is so visible.
Lots of them. One that comes to mind is Toque Peppermint.
I’ll have to try that, I like peppermint, is it actually mentholated or does it just smell like peppermint? Or does that question even make sense? Peppermint contains some menthol I guess but does it have a strong menthol note is what I’m asking I think.
One that I rarely see mention but I love it is de Kralingse Mettaijer, truly unique.
I just did Lorillard and have never seen it mentioned before It is a mild sweet snuff and doesn’t even get the beginners look
Great subject for a thread! I have a deep love for Toque Violet. @MattheFox: I would love to try Lorillard but have never seen it on sale in any internet shop (I live in the UK so wouldn’t see it in any shop at all).
@toffeenose Mr Snuff sells it under American Snuffs/Swisher
@horus92 No menthol in that one except for the innate menthol that is in peppermint as you note.
I am not telling, Next time I go to order, it will be out of stock!
I would give a great recomendation to Dr. Rumneys Exclusive. I recieved it as a sample years back from Nicotinerush, and it simply grew on me. 500g later, and a whole lot of little plastic smash boxes, i have made myself sick with it. For a couple bucks on your next order, it can’t hurt to give it a go.
I would say Dholakia Black. It’s almost as if it’s the little brother, who’s always in big brother Dholakia White’s shadow.
Great subject for a thread! I have a deep love for Toque Violet. @MattheFox: I would love to try Lorillard but have never seen it on sale in any internet shop (I live in the UK so wouldn’t see it in any shop at all).
I like Toque Violet though I put it in a container with orange peels first.
Fubar Shot of Rum. The sauce in that snuff is a work of art which I would put in the top five in the world.
G&H strawberry. It’s a masterpiece. It’s natural strawberry scent with a hint of perfume. The perfume though seems to lead the nose on a tour through the strawberry scent giving it a wonderfull mecurial experience. In fact it’s the only strawberry snuff in my opinion that doesn’t fundementaly suck.
Though I’am going to say lots of times when a snuff is underrated it will get it’s day. NTSU was the bane of this list for years. Untill one memeber said it was good and people actualy tried it. That happens all the time. There are snuffs new memebers are raving about that a year ago only got insulted.
The M&W snuffs from Segar & Snuff in Covent Garden and the snuffs that they have taken over from the old G.Smith range. @Xander encouraged me to try the Jock’s Choice for which I thank him. It is a lovely snuff that uses Neroli Oil so it has an orangey aroma but not exactly a true orange aroma - you need to try it to get the difference. The Covent Cafe Royal is outstanding. It is produced by Gawith & Hoggarth - who I believe produced the original G.Smith Cafe Royal - and it is seriously good. As soon as I get my hands on some of the Abraxas Cafe 11 - I keep meaning to order but have been submerged in work - I will do a comparison. Having not tried the original G.Smiths version I cannot compare it with the original but @Abraxas reviewed the original on the Snuff Central site and it seems to me that the current version is the same - or very similar. I realise they are difficult to get hold of - although I believe that Snuff & Segar will be updating their website at some point - but they are very good snuffs. I shall be working my way through the entire range in the future and will report back. Usual disclaimers: I am not involved commercially - just a very satisfied customer.
Ventors.
a toss up… McChrystal’s Hops or violet… HMMMMMM
Toque Bourbon. It reminds me of BBQ even more than scotches do.
WoS SP 2. A happy medium between scented and unscented SPs.
@toffeenose Thanks for that. I had also seen Sir Johnny Scott’s review of Cafe 11 on SnuffCentral saying the same thing. I will be ordering some Cafe 11 next week to check it out for myself.
Dholakia Black.
For me it’s Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Brown. Most people hold up the one from Sam Gawith, but G&H is really wonderful if baught in the 25 gr. plastic jars and not in the tap boxes. It’s simple pure earthy tobacco pleasure.
The most underrated in my opinion is Perique. Known to be used as snuff this style of tobacco suffering limited availability never became very popular as snuff. Having a high nicotine content and unique flavor and chemistry Perique is fantastic as a snuff. It’s moist oiliness making it difficult to grind may be another reason it is not used in snuff making. Readily available to anyone interested in grinding it themselves it makes a great mixer as well as a full bodied stand alone snuff. It also can give a good back bone to many scents.
I disagree @Juxtaposer it’s under-represented. It sounds like a great snuff.
Packards club snuff by Poschl it’s just amazing
One mans favorite becomes anothers insect repellent (laughing but true)
GH jasmine
Zwiefacher.
who underrates Zwiefacher?
WoS Super Menthol (underrated or just under-mentioned?)- at least I personally never hear folks talking about it.
I hadn’t seen much discussion of Zwiefacher here so I thought maybe it was underrated. Cheerfully withdrawn. I also make daily use of my Tranter Light Toast #21–that one is DEFINITELY underrated. Great nicotine hit, nice simple tobacco flavour when you’re not looking for something really nutty or buttery.
Zwiefacher is one of the greats.
ozona raspberry. Noone talks about it but it is good.
Santa Caterina blue…
Gawith Hoggarth Almond. If you love marzipan then this is the non-fattening alternative.
@OldBigWagon That one is so underrated I’ve never even heard of it.
@TomStrasbourg that’s because its not sold “officially” outside of Italy.
@Xander I’m sure it’s one of many examples of snuff all over the world that it would take some serious effort to acquire. Just one more reason to go to Italy I guess.
@Xander – is it “unofficially” sold outside of Italy perchance?
@Mouse yes, at least one place I know of: http://www.snuff-and-more.de/shop/Schnupftabake-und-Snuffs/Fuer-jeden-Geschmack-etwas/Tabakrein/Santa-Caterina-Blue-Snuff-von-Poeschl--10g-Tuetchen.html They also have the Red (menthol) version. @TomStrasbourg Not too much of an effort. A simple request on the B-S-T thread will probably get you a friendly response from a member in Italy willing to trade. I’ve traded for it before, and its a fine snuff indeed.
Santa Caterina blue is a very good natural snuff with a gentle aftertaste of chocolate. It is an excellent all day snuff and compared to other natural snuff has a greater persistence in the nose. I belive that it is a very atypical Poeschl…If you love naturals, you must try it.
Packard’s Club - I see this one criticized on here often and I don’t really know why. I think it’s really enjoyable - unique scent, nice grind, powerful but not overwhelming. My only complaint is the box it comes in which can be annoying. I also think SD Original is really underrated, I never see it mentioned but I really enjoyed it.
Dragun menthol. It’s one of my favorites and you don’t hear as many raves about it as I think are deserved.
@bsssdd I was just about to click “agree” until I read your complaint about the box. I think it’s the best thing ever invented! Even better than sliced bread! Which reminds me, it’s time to go make something to eat.
@EricJ lol, it is a nice idea for the box but I seem to have trouble getting the snuff out of it sometimes… takes too long and doesn’t deliver enough snuff for a pinch for me.
Just give it a shake or tap it on something first, and if not enough, take 2!
G&H Western Glory is one I don’t see mentioned here very often. It’s a floral, but not as perfumed as some of the F&T snuffs. It has a nice medium-to-course grind, comes fairly moist when bought in the tub, has decent strength, and is quite enjoyable for those who like floral snuffs.
that is why you should review snuffs get the word out.
One that really doesn’t get much of a mention here is Molens non-tobacco snuff Potpourri No.1. It’s not a glucose based offering like most non-baccy versions, but is a mix of; Corn flower, Marigold, Lavender, Majoram, Common sage, Savory, Yellow sandalwood, Orris root, Cinnamon, Cloves, Zeodary, Cardamom a little sugar and a touch of Musk, all wetted with a little ethanol. (That’s copied from SnuffStore) It’s not what it does on it’s own that makes it good, but what it does with other snuffs - a pinch of it along with Bon Bon, Hollandse Bolongaro or a plain tobacco snuff such as G&H McCombie is lovely!
I wouldn’t go so far as to say this snuff is the MOST underrated but it’s definitely under-appreciated. RR Mills Sweet to me smells a lot like the Dholakia White now. It didn’t when I first got it. I don’t know if my nose changed or the snuff “aged” in some way (I’ve had it about a year as I only really use it for dipping now and again). I’d love to try the plain but I can never find it. In fact it’s pretty hard to find any plain snuffs at food lions where I am, it’s all sweet.
Bernard’s Fichtenadel.
Thanks, 3 more in my shopping cart
I think SG Chocolate is underrated. It’s basically Black Coffee with chocolate instead of coffee, its awesome
This Offenbacher Cardinal is amazing. I know it has some fans here but I don’t hear it mentioned much. It’s just sweet moist Virginia tobacco, but not too sweet. I get a lot of vanilla and a little smokiness. Really incredible snuff, I think it’s right up there with White Elephant as my favorite of this latest order.
GH Western Glory has been mentioned already, so - Amostrinha. Great tobacco aroma gently emphasized by subtle menthol. Amazing stuff, I can tell you.
@Viertel I’ll have to try that one, I’ve been looking for a good mentholated snuff to keep me cool in the summer.
@horus92 ive been liking GH sea breezes recently, im expecting it to prove a good summer one for me, might add a little extra menthol though, in the form of wilsons sm500. not sure ive had a n underrated snuff… but i havent seen sea breezes talked about much, so ill go with that.
Dholakia aniseed menthol
Irish Toast no. 21 from Wilsons is awesome and I don’t think I’ve ever heard it mentioned here. Interesting reddish color to it as well. Pretty moist. Very earthy.
I’m going to have to go with Samuel Gawith : Banana .
Cheese & Bacon.
Dean Swift Raspberry…never read about it, but bought a tin in Portland OR last Xmas. It was unexpectedly nice. Pungent berry taste, with a sharp menthol blast following. Also worthy of note is DS Black Watch. Similar to Brunswick, a little more pungent. I saw a u tube where someone said it was a “shoe polish” scent but I didn’t get that at all. I found it to be coarse, moist and quite nice…hmmm.maybe it really is shoe polish! Whatever…it rarely gets mentioned and is worth trying. My last under rated snuff would have to be Silver Dollar Original. I find it to be a very nice SP type, but in the traditional sense. It’s got more menthol than I would prefer, but it has a sort of citrus background. My main complaint is the little tiny 5gm tin. I think all the SD snuffs are rather under appreciated. The good thing for me is that the local Smoker Friendly store carries them. I tried to get them to stock some American snuff, but the owner said no, and that the only other person who bought snuff was someone who dumped it into their lower lip. When I told her it was for the nose, she just looked at me like was some sort of deviant!
American Dental Sweet! Barely mentioned among the American snuffs.
Dholakia sparrow. Very fine, dry and plain- good, honest, sweet tobacco.
I used to really like sparrow but for some strange reason I’ve gone off it, which is unusual for me. Only other snuffs that’s happened with are the tap box Poschls.
@horus92: I concur. Cardinal is a great snuff. Brilliant. Have you tried the Virginie? Almost the same yet not.
Yeah I have that’s another good one, in fact I may like it better than Cardinal, but it clogs my nose like crazy (so does Cardinal but Virginie is even worse).
Rarely do I see Toque Menthol being mentioned and it really is an excellent snuff. I too tend to neglect it just because of the huge array of menthol snuffs. So many snuffs and so little time.
I am a big fan of SG Wild Duck… Seldom see it listed in the ‘What’s in your nose’ section. I find it to have lots of great nuances and never tire of it. Should give it a try ad ‘Walk on the Wild side…’
De Kralingse Macuba
I believe that FUBAR BOHICA is very much underrated. I personally really like this one, it is most certainly a challenging snuff that once you get acquainted with it you will begin to crave it. I personally I am a sucker for spicy food, so that hot pepper kick complemented by notes of dark chocolate, raw cocoa, and even a touch of vanilla really hits the spot. The nuances in this snuff complement each other nicely, but is also bold enough to put up a fight, plus what I would interpret to be a generous portion of vitamin N. Great stuff, but it just seems to fly under the radar a bit. Maybe I am wrong, but to me I feel that it is kind of under appreciated.
I don’t see SG Scotch Black mentioned much. It’s one of my favorite strait tobacco snuffs.
WoS Lemon Toast… like sniffing lemon tea and just as refreshing; Molens Hermbstedt’s Brasil with Kashubian Sauce.
Another one that in my opinion does not get enough accolades is J & H Wilsons Medicated No. 99. Yes I am not a fan of the new tins, however, when it is fresh it is absolutely brilliant snuff. Yes, it is a very basic, but pungent mentholated snuff. This is one of those snuffs that I simply could indulge in all day and wake up the next day wanting more. If you are looking for a strong but straight forward mentholated snuff this is an excellent one to grab for.
Toque Peanut Butter. I never see this snuff get any love but it has been reordered by me every time. The scent may not last long but I can not get enough of that savory roasted nut scent, and it is easy on the nose to boot.
The SG Crest snuffs, blue, yellow and red are quite under rated. I don’t use them every day, but when I want a snuff that is simple in character, yet has a pleasant earthy tone, and moderate N level, I enjoy these three. They are quite similar, the differences being perhaps the tobaccos used. I have read threads about which one people prefer most, but to me, they are almost equal. Today, as I was taking a pinch of the Red Crest, I thought to myself that if this was the only snuff I had, I would be fine. I do find that if I use a lot of any of them, they create a mucous storm in my nose, but upon blowing I find a pleasant, fresh smell remaining.
dragun menthol!!!
I don’t know if I’d call it underrated, but I don’t see an awful lot on here about Wilson’s Royal George. I literally never leave home without it. It’s become my favourite of all my snuff collection
Amostrinha - one of the best snuffs ever
Temptation’s: Mango Cream, Purple Passion, & Lime and Lemony (all Dholakia snuffs, as you know)
McChrystal’s Original and BEST.
I think the WoS Winter Warmer deserves a little attention not that anyone has underated it or anything. i’ve just been using it a lot and think it’s kinda nice, what i think of as a drinking snuff i.e. beers and liquor lol not teas. maybe coffees have not tried with coffee yet. Hmmmmm, be right back. :-?
SG Raspberry- best light menthol raspberry. The scent sticks around And SG Wild Duck- so under rated I rarely think about desert snuffs. I will have to make time for them; and there are so many good ones
FUBAR Medic. Seriously this is a great mentholated snuff that does not get enough attention. In my opinion both the Medic and BOHICA are two snuffs in the FUBAR line that needs more time in the limelight. Both have nice nicotine levels, interesting nuances, and really are high quality snuffs. For a longtime I under appreciated Medic, but now I understand what a masterpiece it really is.
Anyone else notice that Bohica is Cohiba with the B&C switched? Just noticed and thought it was interesting…
oh god not bohica. it actually is the worst pain for me, i ended up dunking my face in cold water, using nasal spray and cotton buds to try and get it out, it made me pretty irrational. if anyone in the uk wants some, feel free. the only purpose it serves in my collection is temptation to try again, and a reminder not to fall for temptation all the time. I actually think firedrac is underrated. im snuffing mine fresh from bulk now (might dry it a bit) and its wonderful… people often bring up dragun and the premium base abraxas, but i find this to be a long standing favourite.
WOS Crumbs of Comfort, everyone knows it but few seem to champion it…
@snuffynose when i joined, CoC was extremely popular from memory, its interesting to see how general snuff tastes change on the forum.
@snuffynose that’s because crumbs of comfort is an amazing snuff. And it doesn’t need help. :
@mrmanos I was reading through this thread with the intention of adding SG Red Crest but I see you have it covered! Such a pleasant mild natural flavour, it probably holds the record for the fastest tin I’ve emptied. Another one I’ve tried recently that I don’t see mentioned is Paul Gotard Vanilla. To me it’s an excellent dessert snuff.
Stok Charlotte, it provides that “cut grass” scent so many members have requested as a desired potential snuff scent.
an old thread but I think both cafe royale and jocks choice need a special mention. Both wonderful little used snuffs as they are not widely available out of the uk
A+S Schweizer Menthol. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone here talk about that one… maybe because it’s pricey for snuff. It’s medicated properties are well… just that. It smells like cough syrup in a good way. I was expecting to overpay for average menthol snuff, but for me it’s the best. I personally like it better than L260, or any medicated snuffs I’ve tried.
I agree SeanOCDPx, A+S is unique.
WoS Brunswick WoS Burgundy WoS Thyme and Lemon F&T Kendal Brown GH Ambassador GH Wild Mint SG SP Scotch SG Toffee
Poschl Radford Premium (not to be confused with Poschl Radford).
I have no idea, but I’m saying 6P Kailash, as I never see it mentioned.
My shortlist of underrated (or almost forgotten) snuffs:
J&H Wilson Medicated No. 99 – Back in the 90’s it was present in almost every news-stand in my country
G&H Kendal Browns – not yet tryied them but they are interesting for sure
Jack
Off the top of my head :
Wos Thyme and Lemon
WoS Prime Minister
WoS Wallflower
Schweiser Menthol (almost like Ricola for the nose)
Toque Champagne
Toque Vanilla
Stok Banana.
@Tobe I’ve been curious about the banana. In my mind it’ll be like banana Runts candy… can you elucidate?
WoS Lemon and Lime. I seldom see it mentioned, but I really enjoy it. Its kind of like Seven-Up soda.
I am going to give a shout out to the man who started this thread @horus92 and say that even 3 years later I still agree about Dholakia Black being underrated. I use it a lot and feel I’m a bit alone on the matter haha.
@SHbickel It’s a natural banana scent, not a candy or otherwise artificial one. I like SG Banana, but as compared to the offering from Stok, it’s not as pure a banana scent. It’s definitely worth a try if you like bananas… that don’t come in a box of Runts.
^ sorry but there is no such thing as a natural banana flavor. All and I mean ALL banana flavoured products are artificially flavoured as well as ALL of SG fruit flavoured snuffs are artificially flavoured (SG has admitted to using only artificial flavors in their snuffs, there is a copy of the email SG sent somewhere on this forum)it is not possible to extract the banana flavor from bananas many have tried but none have ever come close to succeeding
@n9inchnails My point was that it’s the scent of a real banana; if it’s been artificially produced… well, that’s just amazing that you can artificially produce such a natural scent.
I misread your post… it was early in the morning
Toque ginger. I love ginger and this stuff is just like shoving some freshly peeled root up your hooter. Not something one would normally do, but if it happens to be enriched with nic and based on lovely tobacco, then why not?
