I found another “catarrh” snuff, this one is Dr. Marshall. I don’t know if its a tobacco snuff. Two of them are up now, both from the same seller. Perhaps a snuffhouse member is curious enough to try them out for us.Doctor Marshall’s Catarrh Snuff IDoctor Marshall’s Catarrh Snuff IILots of other goodies up now too. I saw a ceramic Pöschl bottle, a Wilson’s table snuffbox, and lots of unopened tins of American snuffs. Also a very cool tin, that might make a good snuffbox from Premier Golden Snuff, Durham, N.C.
The Doc Marshalls may not be tobacco snuff, apparently there were quite a few medicinal sniffing powders on the market back in the day, interesting though…
corkscrew
True, I’ve taken it for years for a back injury, got a couple of grammes sitting in the cupboard for if it flares up. Nasty to give it up after takling it for a while though, the CT is a living death…
Morphine doesn’t get along with me very well. I have only had it once, and it did not end well. I had visions of strange little men dancing about my hospital room throwing flowers out of a picnic basket, and the stuffed animal I got as a get well present came to life and started eating me alive. Now they say I can’t have it anymore.
Pliers.
if cork screw does not fit, try using a wood screw with a large thread…
I asked the ghost of my greatgrandpa he said we are all a bunch of jive turkeys (he trys to stay on top of the modern slang) and as adults we should all know that you just use your teeth on a cork like that. (J.k. of course.)
here’s a new one:2 vintage snuffsThe asking price is insane?
now heres something for you guys to check out, starting bid of $0.99 Original Dr. Rumney’s
anyone else think that Dr Rumney looks a bit suprised and taken aback??? Like someone jumped out from behind the bushes to take his photo. Or is that just me?
@Xander; I think the seller is either underestimating the intelligence of the average snuff taker or overestimating the value of old, stale and possibly tainted snuff.
@bob If yer grandpappie is trying to keep up with the slang he’s about 30 years behind.
that’s just Bob’s sense of humor. He’s a real hoot! (I try to keep up with the slang too)
Of course he’s 30 years behine, he’s an old geezer
glad someone got that a geezer trying to be hip would be a little behind (especialy if he was a ghost).
old benson and hedges snuff box on ebay … maybe benson and hedges made snuff back in the day … http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-BENSON-HEDGES-Silverplated-SNUFFBOX-RARE-NR-/170503114703?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH\\_DefaultDomain\\_0&hash=item27b2c70fcf … sorry about that tried to upload photos and link didnt seem to work
Doesn’t really look like a snuff box to me. Probably some old promotional item.
A pocket ashtray, I’d say.
Though I found a perfume bottle that looks like a snuff box to me. Yeah that definatly looks more like a pocket asstray.
I remember having a pocket ashtray, or it may have been my parents long ago, I guess in the 70’s. I do recall a round one, that had the middle top/lid come up, and I played with it as a kid as a flying saucer.
I know this an old thread, but I recently purchased an 1889 bottle of Dr. Marshall’s Catarrh Snuff in a beautiful bluish bottle. After removing the seal and cork with some difficulty, I tapped a little out and tried it. It is quite strong, tobacco based for sure, and has 19th century medicinal ingredients. I removed all the snuff from bottle and stored in airtight tin. I can see why its “medicinal”, as it is quite unpleasant in aroma. Texture is medium, not fine, and it for sure has some effect on the sinuses. It does not contain morphine or cocaine, but nonetheless, it is distinctly medicinal, and not for enjoyment.
Man, that snuff survived 125 years unsealed I wouldn’t dare to open it myself, unless I had it doubled. Congratulations, though. The only snuff-related old thing I own are two 100 years old advertisement-post-stamps from Bernard Schmalzlerfranzl and several identical stoneware snuffboxes from fifties/sixties.
October 2014 update on Dr Marshall’s. The snuff still the medicinal scent, but I’ve realized that “medicinal” is probably the wrong word. Rather, its intensely herbal, with something resembling camphor, and the tobacco is very light colored, almost yellow. Tonight I mixed it 1:3 with some vintage Honest Scotch. It made it much better, and the herbal effects can now be felt, without a giant sneezing attack. I forgot to mention, the earlier sniffs I had caused me to go into sneezing nonstop for about 1o minutes. That has never happened with any snuff in my own experience. The old ads for this snuff said it cured deafness, catarrh, and did not contain morphine or cocaine! Continued reading revealed that most “catarrh” snuff recipes of the day contained either one, or both of the aforementioned drugs. Well, it leaves me wondering what actually is in this snuff? Unfortunately, there appears to be no published list still extant, unless it lies hidden inside a dusty drawer somewhere…
