Molens Spices???

Has anyone tried any of the Molens Spices that are available directly from the website?? Are these spices used in baking or for scenting snuff? I don’t know if there exists such a separate category for spices. I am familiar with snus flavorings that you would not necessarily use in cooking but rather to flavor snus, particularly Snus X products. But anyway, I would appreciate any insight on these spices, definitely interested in the ‘ground by windpower cinnamon.’

Great question ! I’ve been wondering about adding ground cloves to a few of my plain/bland snuffs ? It doesn’t seem to cause any harm in Indonesian Kretek’s that I’m aware of.

@ zzedo310: No, but I’m pretty sure they are cooking spices. I might get some when I get around to making a bulk Molens purchace. I’m curious, are the other spices, besides the one windpower cinnamon, not ground with windpower? There are two cinnamons listed. Jaap can you enlighten us? @perique: in that case you’d be snuffing clove powder along with the tobacco. Its probably safe, but might be irritating. Clove essential oil is easily enough obtained, just go to the local pharmacy and look at toothache remedies. It sometimes sold as eugenol. Scenting snuff with essential oil is very easy.

@zzedo310 and Xander: Yes the spices in the price list are all cooking spices. The reason we have two types of cinnamon is the following. Until a year ago we were sponsored by one of the largest spices manufacturers in the Netherlands. Because of this sponsoring we were only allowed to sell spices ground in the plant of our sponsor. This was to avoid problems with the Dutch FDA conserning production for human consumption. Now the sponsorship has ended we are no longer boud by this deal. The Dutch FDA however allows windmills to produce for human consumption under the regulations of the “Hygiene Code” these regulations are made to make it possible for windmills to produce for human consumption without complying fully to the HACCP regulations. Our cinnamon ground with windpower is made according to the “Hygiene Code”. The oher spices are the last batches groud in the plant of our sponsor fully in accord with the HACCP regulations. The cinnamon is also used in snuff. For instance our Musinotabak and Potpourri No. 1 contain it. Hope this answers your questions a bit. Jaap Bes.

Thanks Jaap for the quick response! I visited the site a couple days ago and saw that the spices were €1,00 for 100g. If I correctly converted the currency, this equals out to be appx. $1.25?? If so, this is one heck of a deal! I’ll be ordering very soon!

Thank you Jaap. So is it safe to assume that you will grind your own spices (other than cinnamon) with windpower once the other supply is sold off?

@zzedo310: I am not sure what the currency rate is at the moment, but indeed we sell the spices at € 1,00 per 100 grams. We can give a discount for bulk orders. The spices are sold in plastic bags exept for the windpower ground cinnamon, this is sold in pp cans containing 50 grams, the price of a can is € 0,60. Other quantities and packings can be discussed. @Xander: Yes that is our aim. We are indeed Snuff and Spices windmills. Jaap Bes.

Just got my order! It took 14 days total or 6 business days! I was happy about that! The package’s customs dec stated ‘spices’ and ‘snuff tobacco,’ and made it to me unmolested/unopened. So anyway, I got 6 snuffs and 2 spices. The snuffs were in the normal containers but contained a taped seal, I think this makes a world of difference because these were the best DK snuffs I have ever had! On to the topic here, I got some curry and cinnamon. The windpower cinnamon smells like cinnamon! Nothing too unique about this but it did come in a great shaker spice jar! The price was unbeatable and just the fact it was made by windpower makes this my favorite cinnamon! Now for the curry, this too was very cheap for 100 grams! It came in a plastic tub with screw on lid. I have been using some cheap McCormick curry probably bought at Walmart and there is a huge difference between the two curries. The molens curry smells wonderful! Very rich and deep scent, more so than the McCormicks. I am going to be cooking with it tonight! I would have added more spices but wanted to keep my order in the lowest shipping bracket. Next time I am just gonna go nuts and order all spices! Anyway, long post but short point - if you haven’t tried the Molen’s spices, I highly recommend, just based on the 2 I got! I can only imagine the others to be just as great!

@zzedo310: Thanks for the kind words. The irony of your message is that our sponsor the Dutch spices firm which prepared the curry receipes was taken over by McCormick and doesn’t grind any more spices. Jaap Bes.
