Molens ceasing snuff production: a bit drastic?

Does anyone know why they have taken this decision? They seem to be pretty small and their snuff range was not huge they don’t seem to be the sort of outfit that would attract huge attention. They listed all their ingredients too. It strikes me as odd that a country that allows dope smoking can force a tiny maker of snuff to completely pull out of the market. I see snuffstore still has a few of their snuffs for sale: any recommendations?

The wind mills were sold. end of story.

Buy what ever you can. some come in there own snuff box. the box alone is worth buying!

PS Spices are for cooking do not snuff spices.

As I understand it, it was a cumulative effect. The windmills were sold, the millers were about ready for or in retirement anyway, and by the way, they were volunteers, plus the TPD thing. Although the new legislation was potentially a factor (more for the new owners than the original crew), it wasn’t the only thing against them

Oh right I got the impression that the mill was some kind of heritage attraction from my reading. I have only come into taking nasal snuff in the past few months so sorry for any stupid questions. I see the mill is still going though making spices…@basement_shaman no I have no intention of snuffing curry powder though it looks like six photo have a snuff flavoured with curry spices.

And unfortunately NHolland set one of the most stricktest Antitobacco Law with implemntation TPD2, maybe only Hungary hav more strict laws about selling and advertising tobacco (like plain packaging and such). Jack

I see it is all pretty sad…I just hope Johnny here in the UK holds out.

@matteob  It is a very nice snuff; you should get the 6 Photo assortment it is a good deal. and a great way to try 6 photo range without a large investment. I am sure you will find some new favorites. You can thank me later!

De Kralingse is incredible. Their recipes are antique snuffs. I love the different de Kralingse snuffs, from the snuffmiller Jaap Bes. I wish the best for the Man, and thank you for the antique snuffs that I cherish.  All of the de Kralingse snuffs are superb.

I do understand that production has ceased and this fact is a bit sad.

Yea I have been reading up on jaap: seems a decent man and a craftsman. i will see if I can get some of the residual stock.

@matteob snuff.me.uk had some in last time I checked. When I last got some from there it had dried out considerably, but rehydrated nicely.

I think I will avoid then.I am not a long term snuff expert and don’t know how to hydrate snuff. Paul Shallbetter said in a video that the stock at Mr Snuff is old. I like the bakelite chest though!

@matteob re-hydrating snuff is a fairly simple procedure. All you need is a ziplock bag, some water (some people swear by distilled though in reality shouldnt make a difference) and a bottle cap to hold the water.

Just put your dehydrated snuff tin in the ziplock bag fill the bottlecap with distilled water, put the bottle cap inside the ziplock bag and seal it. Leave the snuff and the bag overnight and check your moisture levels, if it still needs more hydration just repeat the method until the desired results are achieved.

@:matteob: Although I mentioned my reasons for quitting snuff production before, I’ll tell them once more.

I started the snuff production 10-15 years ago to preserve the craft for future generations. The windmills ware then owned by the municipality of Rotterdam for about 100 years.

I was in my early 60s then. After a few years the municipality decided that  keeping the mills good shape  was to expensive en plans ware made to sell the mills. This took about 5 years.

In the meantime we kept on producing hoping we could go on after the mills ware sold. In the meantime the new european law on tobacco(products) was worked out.

Both the selling of the mills to a new owner, who was not at all interested in the proces in the mills snuff making and spices grinding and the complete integration of the complete EU law in the Dutch tobacco law made me also considering my age -halfway my seventies- made me decide to stop producing and though selling snuff.

My fellow millers are trying to keep up the spices grinding.

OK thank you Sir and good luck with the retirement. I am new here so I did not see earlier posts.

Dear Jaap,my good man, have you consider passing your legacy to the new generation?for example: giving the recipies to a young craftman(let’s say Roderick of TOQUE) or writing a book or making seminars or…
Please save the recipe of St.Omer 1!!!
