Is it typical for moist snuff, Sir Walter Scott for example, to grow mold? Only been a month or two and opened it up today and fuzzy green mold is all over it.
Which one? I guess I will have to check all mine.
Auld Alliance This was purchased in December of 2013 if I recall correctly but I’ll check my Mr Snuff account. If it’s older it won’t be by much.
My AA looks and smells fine but my Creme de Figue is moldy, unless the lids got switched, unlikely since I only open one at a time. This is a shame I thought he had solved this problem.
I remember reading an old thread about this and thought this was solved as well. Mine looked bout as gross as that.
I dare not open it. the spores may get in my lungs.
To Grim and Basement_Shaman. I am of really sorry you have discovered mould in a pot of my snuff. All SWS snuffs are heat treated to destroy mould spores and the jars they go into are rigorously sterilised and when they leave me they are as mould spore free as it is possible to make them. Please PM me and I will arrange a replacement. Johnny
@Grim and basement_shaman out of curiosity, do either of you pinch right out of the jars? I’ve worried about introducing spores or other bad things in my larger containers this way but I live in washington state it’s wet all the time here so mold in general grows easily.

i avoid it (use spoon only) and got mold in an SWS. auld alliance i think, even in the treated batch. only snuff ive ever got mold in, except for maybe santo domingo but im not sure that was mold.
Are there any unopened jars that have gone moldy? If not it is most likely that these snuffs are susceptible to mold and mold is being introduced into the snuff when you open it or pinch from it, if the snuffs had mold spores in them when they were jarred then there should be unopened jars that have gone moldy.
Just checked my entire collection and all ok except abraxas batch coarse.it has white balls of mold on it .shame but they do get mold if you don’t use them quick i guess.
As with Johnny’s, all my snuffs are pasteurised and go into sterile jars. My bottom line is, and always will be, that I will replace any jar of Abraxas snuff that is in any way defective. @snuffykib - please contact me and I will arrange this - either pm or email me at abraxas@abraxassc.com
You’d better check out your Molens de Kralingse’s Hermbstedt’s Brasil with Kashubian Sauce. Me and few people from Poland have noticed a mold inside of it. Mold attacked only kashubian version - every other Molens is fine.
@Viertel: I’ll look into the problem. Jaap Bes.
For what it’s worth, my two boxes look fine so far but one is going into the freezer tomorrow morning.
@Mouse: That’s the way to avoid the problem. But I’ll going to look what I can do to prevent mold growth. Jaap Bes.
I keep my entire collection in air tight tupperware containers by brand. Wilsons and S. Gawith take up several tupperware boxes, so they’re segregated by type; don’t want the medicated snuffs to “infect” the others. Some are decanted into sterilised mason jars or brand new sterilised sauce bottles (I used to be in that business). The high end snuffs are kept in their original tin or jar. The whole collection then goes into a 30 Gallon Igloo Ice Chest. I keep my rotation snuffs on my desk, and I never use my fingers in my snuff. I use Mr. Snuff’s Titanium spoon for putting on my hand or filling my snuff boxes. It seems the high end, hand crafted snuffs like Abraxas and Sir Walter Scott are more susceptible to mold. I’ve lost a 50 Gram Moro Moro, a 50 Gram AA and a 50 Gram Lundy Foot, of all things! As dry as that snuff is, I’d have thought it would be impervious to any cooties. It’s like Kevlar or so I thought. The most devastating was the loss of almost an entire 50 Gram pot of Abraxas Cafe 11:(…the only one of his snuffs I really like. I still have quite a bit of Smith’s Cafe Royal, and Cafe 11 is so close it’s scary. Turns out I’m a real idiot. I tossed the entire mess into the trash lest they infect the entire collection. I’m too stupid to take a photo and post a comment. It happened a long while ago; Caveat Emptor. I’ve never had a similar problem with any of my homemade concoctions.
@chefdaniel - I will pm you about a replacement. This is why Johnny Scott and I are introducing storage advice on our labels. Artisan snuff has the flavour that it has because we don’t use chemical anti fungals (usually an ammonia based liquor) but we will now give storage advice - refrigerate after opening, keep tightly closed and decant using only a clean dry implement and all our labels from now on will state that; simple advice that should solve this problem and keep your artisan snuff in top condition.
@lunecat Snuff is a product like any other, so it can mold like any other. Like a banana, but I do not say “do not eat banans because it could rot”. I just want to make it clear - I was surprised when I noticed a mold and I know I am not the only one who has its Molens molded. I greatly appreciate all the work Jaap do, he makes excellent snuff - I didn’t mean to be understood like I’m accusing Jaap of something or saying it is his fault. I just wanted to pay close attention on those two particular snuff (Hermbstedt’s Brasil with Kashubian Sauce and Limburgertabak) and make you snuff it faster.

Should I vac seal the container before refrigeration? Any advice on how to bring back to ambient temperature to avoid condensation issues? Many thanks for your prompt response.
