I am in a little turmoil about menthol snuffs. When I first started using snuff I bought quite a few menthol varieties and used them as ‘everyday’ snuffs (especially McChrystals O&G) but now I seem to be having a few problems with excess drainage at the back of the throat. When I use menthol snuffs during the day after 2-3 hours I find myself coughing to clear my throat every five minutes and by the end of the day the problem is really getting on my nerves, after one particularly bad day recently I was up half the night drinking gallons of water and hacking away (much to my pregnant wifes irritation) trying to clear the muck out of my throat so I could breathe lying on my back! At first I was worried it was just snuff in general that created the problem and was quite upset at the prospect of kicking such an enjoyable habit after only just having started it but yesterday I got home from work, deliberately cleared what was in my throat by drinking loads then (as an experiment) I snuffed nothing but F&T ‘Morlaix’ all evening and the drainage problem went away. It is definately the menthol snuffs that are causing the problem rather than snuff in general…this is good news as it means I don’t need to quit completely but bad news as I like menthol snuffs. It appears I am faced with no choice but to stop using menthol snuff which sucks because about half my current collection is mentholated unless someone has any advice or techniques to reduce drainage issues? If no-one can suggest anything I guess i’ll just have to chuck it all in the bin. Any advice would be gratefully received!
Well I have had good luck with all snuffs, as I tend to not have much problem with them. I do on occasion cough up some junk with a little snuff in it. It never causes any problems breathing though, but it does kind of make me think. I would think the only reason snuff is finding its way into our throats is that it is going to far up into our nasal cavities then we are experiencing a post nasal drip. So my only two bits of advice is work on not allowing the snuff to get to far up your nose, and my second bit of advice is don’t throw away your O&G but mail it to me!
Well I have already chucked away a box of Gawith Apricot that I brought into work with me as it has mentol in it…it was a very hard thing to do especially when I saw how much was in the tin! :o( I’ve also just realised that throwing away my only supply of snuff for the next 6 hours was really daft…
Hiya lazarus - its a common theme. Some people just can’t use menthol without excessive ‘side effects’. I am the same and I just immediately get a ‘drooling’ nose with menthol, have to blow it and ten minutes later I am blocked up. As you say, a move to drier or plainer snuff tends to solve this - which is why I only use SP and Irish types for the most part, with an occasional bit of Royal George as a flavouring/mixing agent. Heavily flavoured snuffs also have the same effect for some people. I wouldn’t call it an allergy as such, but we are all different, the mucous membrane is pretty delicate and some things just upset it. You might be one of those snuffers that will be best to narrow down the ones that suit you most and stick with them. I did this and now take - Wilson’s SP, Tom Buck and Irsih22 and Toque original and natural. I have no problems with these and now find that I enjoy snuff far more than when I used a wide range. Try getting hold of a plain unscented SP or dry Irish and using nothing else for a week. Whilst it will be a lot stronger than the ‘candy’ snuffs at first you may well find it has even less bad effects on your nose than Morlaix after about a week and you actually wouldn’t want to go back Try - Wilsons SP, Tom Buck or Irish, J and H Wilsons SP No 1 or Top Mill No 1 or F & T High Dried Toast. Toque original is also superb and my snuff of the moment.
Thanks for the good advice Snuffster, I will get myself some Wilsons SP soon and give it a go - cheers!
Well since you are new to snuff, try experimenting taking snuff, you’ll eventually learn how to not get it to your throath. When i first got my Toque, took a good pinch, and then BAM,coughing for 5 minutes. Try with smaller ammounts, and also with how fast you snuff it up your nose. You’ll get used to it,like i got used for large amounts of Toque. I noticed with mentholated snuffs that i just can’t take small ammoutns,i get blocked up in few mins. So since i got used to Gletscherpirese,GAwith Apricot is no problem. Anyways see here how much of GP i take: http://youtube.com/user/jurabarkovic Those are videos of me snuffing.
Funny thing is today has been a menthol day for me. One pinch of old paris is the only non-menthol I’ve had today. I’ve had the same problem as you before. The thing is I’ve noticed it depends not just on how much menthol snuff I use but how often and continuously. I would recomend chilling out on it for sometime then gradualy useing it less often. When I’ve done this I’ve noticed the menthol doesn’t bother me nearly as much.
someone delete this,error…
Try just blowing the nose more often like in between snuffs. And don’t snort back any drainage you feel, blow it out. You can also mix some of the menthol with non-menthol to cut the menthol down so you don’t have to throw away. Or you can get creative and mix the menthol snuff with lotion and use it as a sore muscle rub or mix with liquid soap for an invigorating face scrub.

At first I was loathe to use menthol snuffs. Now it seems I don’t really ‘smell’ the monthol, per se. Rather, I feel the menthol and it actually seems to help enhance the other scents blended in. The funny thing, however, is that it seems to really clog me up pretty good once the menthol has faded. Snuffs without menthol have a very opposite effect on my sinuses. Now that I’m really starting to enjoy some of the menthols, I am finding them harder and harder to use.

I’m also a non menthol kind of guy. It’s kind of a shame as I really like O&G and quite frequently used to have mini binges on the stuff where I would take a load of pinches in a few minutes. I have now decided it isn’t worth the hassle and haven’t touched any of my menthol snuffs for about a month. They mainly just clog me up so I can barely breathe out of my nose. I have actually found that the more experienced I get with snuff the less types of snuff I tolerate. I rarely take anything coarse and moist any more as I find it gets in my throat easily and stings my nose a little if I take too much. Has anyone else found this less types of snuff with experience thing? I’m sure I never used to have these problems with menthol snuffs. I am now just taking no nonsense snuffs which I can shovel as much into my nose as I like and feel no discomfort. SP blends, toast and almost the entire Toque range (bravo again Roderick!). I have the odd pinch of something like Santo Domingo or SG Kendal Brown and it is fine in (extreme) moderation.
BTW Lazarus,try Toque Blueberry,you won’t get dissapointed.
Thanks Roam, i’ve contacted Roderick about the free samples and I think ‘blueberry’ is one of the samples he’s sending me so i’ll look forward to trying that one. Cheers :o)

I find peppermint has the refreshing coolness of menthol, a fine aroma and for me does not result in the aforementioned problems. It is also highly volatile and it fades quickly revealing the tobacco and other flavorings. If you crave that icy blast, but can’t take menthol, try some peppermint!
I’m really new to snuff and I’ve found myself enjoying the menthols but really love wilsons peppermint, lasts a long time and is almost like candy, good stuff!

I like the menthol’s, Peppermint and the Spearmint’s as well as lots of none medicated snuff. I find to get the true taste of the others is to take a long break off the medicated say for at least an hour.
