I dislike menthol. I keep one tin on hand in case I get sick because I find it allows me to take snuff when I’m congested and get some temporary relief as well.

I just hate this Pöschl I have. My question is, is there an English or Indian menthol that a tobacco lover can embrace? I normally snuff dark, moist tobaccos like Kendal Brown, Best Dark, Lavender Dark etc. Would one of the peppermint SG snuffs have a similar clearing effect? Thanks guys.

C

Hedges, Medicated 99.

BTW, the thread title gave me a chuckle, sounds like a personal ad. LOL

M

Definitely second the Hedges–nice and dark, very clearing.

S

GH CM is pretty good as well.

N

SG Peppermint Dark is a delicious snuff and seeing how you like the darks its right up your alley.

I

I’m a menthol hater myself. O&G is the only menthol I can stand. I don’t use it regularly. But I enjoy the odd pinch from time to time

T

I agree with ItsMajick.  I’m not a big menthol fan, but I do like O&G enough to buy it in bulk and use it regularly.

P

Dr. Rumneys Exclusive, its a SA and very very good imo. Great tobacco, very light on the medication, medium/coarse grind, super nicotine hit.

S

Peppermint opens me up and so far I haven’t had rebound. I may have to try it for a half a day or so to see how my nose reacts.

The 6 Photos I have tried have much lighter menthol. Fine grind but moist.

F

This thread brings to mind the Most Interesting Man in the World commercials for Dos Equis beer. I don’t always snuff menthol, but when I do, I prefer…

I’m not a huge menthol fan myself, but I also agree with the O&G recommendation. For some reason, I’m fairly fond of Dholakia medicated…while not so much dark, it seems to hit the spot just right for me. Just my .02 though.

@cakeanddottle what kind of poschls do you have? And I reccomend GH M4X

C

I am getting a tin of Peppermint Dark and a tin of Mastiff. I can just squeeze tins of WoS SM Brown and Venter’s Menthol & Camphor into my cart without the shipping going up, or I can ditch the Venter’s and get a 6 Photo Medicated 66. Opinions on Venter’s & 6 Photo 66?

C

Nevermind, I’ll try the 66 some other time. I am going to take Xander’s advice and get a tub of GH CM for now.

B

Toque peppermint is a great alternative to menthol.

M

I second the SG Peppermint Dark, very good imo, dark and soothing. I would also second Hedges-but it’s very strongly medicated, and recommend looking into some of Wilson’s: SM 500, SM Gold, SM Brown(all strong). Also Wilsons less mentholated offerings: Apricot Menthol (if you like fruit), SM… Maybe Taxi Green from South Africa- strong tobacco, but not heavy in menthol. Or other South Africans which come in natural and menthol: Ntsu, Babaton etc. I’d also recommend Dholakia Sparrow Cool, Dholakia Medicated has a stronger (imo not as clean) scent from the base tobacco. Also Toque has a nice selection of menthols: Menthol (strongly medicated), Blueberry Menthol, Cherry Menthol, and Raspberry Menthol are all very nice, the fruit and menthols use the menthol in moderation. Good luck!

M

I heartily suggest SG Menthol Brown.  It is the Kendal Brown base with just enough menthol to open you up, but not so much menthol as to overwhelm the delicious tobacco base.  I have a friend who, like you, hates menthols, but even he can get down on some Menthol Brown.  I really think it is an overlooked snuff; it’s what I start my day with almost every day.

C

Is the GH CM a Kendal Brown variant or is it a finer flour?

T

CM is a lot like O&G from McChrystal’s in terms of flavor/scent.  Its a brown powder, with medium grind and moisture.

A

I really love Gawith Hoggarth’s ‘Eucalyptus’ nasal snuff.

J

Hedges l260. I hate menthol but for the times when i don’t , hedges hits the spot.

B

@cakeanddottle" I just hate this Pöschl I have"
Gletscher prise menthol mit columbia Ol is that the poschl? Your hating?

B

Dholakia anise is amazing. And is good for when you need a good dose of menthol but don’t want a snuff that just smells of menthol.

C

@basement_shaman Gawith Apricot

I really just prefer coarser, darker more barnyard-y snuff. The Pöschl stuff covered in parafin with so much menthol in it I couldn’t tell you if there is tobacco there just doesn’t do it for me, and they all strike me that way.

F

I second the Dholakia anise…very pleasant snuff.

C

went with:

GH CM

SG Wild Duck

SG Mastiff

SG Peppermint Dark

SG Menthol Brown

6 Photo Medicated No66

6 Photo Special

6 Photo Kailash

had to draw the line somewhere, so I left out Venter’s and Dr Rumneys due to unavailability in bulk. Did snag a tin of Taxi Blue so I can try the SA snuff though.

P

So far the 6 Photo Kailash does it for me. It’s fluffy like Dholakia Black, but with a big exotic scent (rose at the top) and menthol crystals, not blabbed in oil like the Poschl line. I prefer darker moist snuffs as well, and this could be the only menthol I could see myself buying bulk. Tell me what else you found to be agreeable after you get your order.

J

Viking Menthol.  Dark, strong, course and moist.  The menthol is very very mild for me… its one of my favorites for sure.

W

Camphor & Mild would be a good choice. It cools your nose just a little, and has great flavour.

Stefan

J

GH western glory is pretty mild in the menthol category.

N

how about Samuel Gawith’s ZIP !? very nice snuff but get it in tin so it is fresh.

C

GH CM is nice, still have to try the others. CM is a great first thing in the morning, last thing before bed snuff.

V

Leaving out GH M4X was a mistake imho

C

6 Photo Medicated No. 66 is also a win.

C

6 Photo Special was a big NO for me. There is something in it that I don’t like at all.

M

Zwiefacher is a good one with some mild methol.

Z

Hedges, Medicated 99.

BTW, the thread title gave me a chuckle, sounds like a personal ad. LOL

Got to agree with the Medicated 99, it’s great stuff!

C

also like Mullins & Westley Keen Scented and NTSU Green. Venter’s is good, but not as good as CM or 66 in the menthol & camphor snuff genre. I like all the SG peppermints I’ve tried. Next I am going back for more NTSU Green, and I think Dholakia African is one I want to try.

B

Dragun menthol is perfect for the menthol hater. It’s got menthol but is totaly non-offensive.

H

If you dislike menthol, try some of the 6 Photo blends. The Indian snuffs (for me anyway) were an absolutely new experience and a delight to the nose.

H

BTW: My favorites are 6 Photo Kailash and 6 Photo Special.

M

Bernard’s Fichtennadel is a menthol snuff that I frequently use to convert menthol haters. It is a strong menthol, but balanced so well it is hard to try and still say you don’t like menthol.

B

Dynamite & 666 are a must have! never clog me up once. Give me strong menthol or none at all

I

SG has a WONDERFUL menthol called Sam’s Own. The menthol is strong, but nothing like J&H Medicated No 99 or Hedges, and there’s this spicy note to it…something like cinnamon. Really wonderful stuff, very layered. Another interesting one from SG is Dr. Verey’s. Their site says there are “various medicinal herbs” in it, and the cooling note is very light. If you like the spicy touch in Sam’s Own, imagine that with a slightly medicated vibe; very good stuff. Anarkali from 6Photo is pretty wonderful, too. It’s lighter menthol (about like Sam’s Own, but stronger than Verey’s) with a strong rose/citrusy flavor. I love it. Bernard’s Weiss Blau may also be up your alley: a rich, oily, Bernard-y smelling snuff, but with a medium (about like Sam’s own) level of menthol. This one, I gotta say, is pretty damn runny. Take it at home, but you’ll be glad you did. Hope this has been in some degree helpful.
