"Medicated" Snuffs?

What is everyone’s favorite in terms of Medicated snuffs? I was hoping to find the sort of snuff that would actually act like medicated herbs to sooth your nose, like putting on Vicks Vap-O-Rub. The only “Medicated” snuff I’ve tried is J & H Wilsons Medicated No. 99, which to me felt like nothing but another moderately mentholated snuff, basically like a weaker Hedges. So not sure what “medicated” means in that case. How about other “Medicated” snuffs, like Gawith Hoggarth Medicated and Samuel Gawith Dr. Verey’s Medicated? How are those? How do they compare to J&H Wilson No99? I’ve noticed even Indian snuffs offer “Medicated” varieties, 6-Photo offers 3 different kinds, No.6, No.66 and No. 666. Anyone have any experience/help in discerning the difference between the 3 and which is best? I’m intrigued by the mention of “traditional Indian herbs” included in each of them. Dholakia also has a Medicated Snuff, but it sounds to me like it’s just menthol. Any of these have any actual ‘medicinal’ properties or are all they just plain old mentholated snuffs sold with “Medicated” in the name as a marketing gimmick?

Look no farther 6 photo Anarkali,Kailash,Medicated No.6,No.66,No.666,Motia,Natural,Special all work with no rebound congestion. There are many more but these have not failed for me.

Yeah, I have a tin of Dr. Verey’s M and it’s milder and more natural and herbal than say Hedges. I think alpine herbs and Ricola candy with medicated… and ice cool chemical menthol crystals with mentholated. There’s a shade of difference to my experience and understanding. Dr. Verey’s by the way is very similair to Toque’s Camphor & Clove…

It’s rather the second option today, but the medicated snuffs did originated as medicinal powders when they were created by dr Rumney’s in 1830 (as I remember correct). Since then a lot of chemists also joined in making such, like William Ross Hedges or Henry Lester (JIP snuff). But some consider the medicated snuffs to by a good thing for rhinitis.

Unfortunately my snuff cart is pretty overloaded already, so I can’t afford to add all of those, but any particular ones of those that stand out? I guess I’d like to get one with “Medicated” in the name just for the placebo effect. (Also the No. 666 appears to come only in a $20 200g jar, out of my price range)

6 Photo Kailash. Before I discovered 6 Photo, I (almost) exclusively used Poschl Ozona President for several years.

I have and love 6 Photo Kailash. But it doesn’t fit with the sort of medicated snuff I am looking for, menthol with some other herbs added to kinda sooth your nose. Kailash is wonderful for a scent that smells like a spring day in a field, but it’s not really my idea of “medicated”. But thanks for the recommendation. I love Ozona snuffs, I used to buy them for 50 euro cents each at the local tabaccherie when I lived in Rome, Italy, but the prices to import Pöschl snuffs from Mr. Snuff just are a tad too pricy to justify buying them, perhaps since I was used to buying them for so cheap while in Europe. In the meantime it looks like Mr. Snuff has just sold all out of J&H Wilson No.99 Medicated, so I’m definitely looking for some better alternatives at this point.

I switch around No 66 has chocolate undertones and was a daily ,Special is similar to kailash ,Molta is effective and most recently I been going with the natural ,it brown not black and works well .unfortunately 6 photos don’t disclose exact formulas. If your having moisture problems it could be as simple as drinking more water. Dr.Rumneys by Wilson of Sharrow is a good decongestant with the scent of anis. Wilsons Crumbs of Comfort is a nice peppermint snuff ,peppermint does have medical use… You may want try WoS camphor& mild. Finally: Dr Rumneys by Swedish match https://mrsnuff.com/product\_info.php?cPath=120&products\_id=865 This may be the product you been searching for.

How about tossing a chunk of camphor into some S.P. and letting it cure for a bit? (I’ve tried this using some Tom Buck and it worked wonders!) Camphor blocks should be available at just about any pharmacy.

Dr. Rumneys seems to be a South African snuff, is it really made by Wilson’s of Sharrow? How does it rate compared to British menthol snuffs? I’ve used both Crumbs of Conform and Extra Crumbs of Comfort, but I would definitely describe them both as spearmint rather than peppermint. (Personally I like spearmint but am not a fan of pepperimint, which is why my 21g tin of McChrystal’s Supermint is still pretty much filled to the brim) I’ve also used WoS Camphor&Mild, I find it kind of dull by itself, I usually mix it with Hedges or another mentholated snuff for a Menthol & Camphor mix.

i like 6photo 66, quite an interesting snuff. has more interesting dimensions than the usually quite flat english medicated. however i do like the WoS S.M 500 when im in the mood for a good menthol. otherwise i use WoS dual flavours like cool guarana (love this one) and liquorice ice to keep things interesting. oh, and i really like toque menthol. as gor your question on Dr Rumneys, im sure the post you quoted kinda answers your question… im not sure where shaman got the WoS Dr. Rumneys from, but the Dr. Rumneys i am aware of is a ‘south african’ thats on a level with poschl menthols, made by swedish match.

The traditional English Medicated snuff style always includes one or some combination of menthol, camphor and/or eucalyptus. The expanded definition could also include pine, spearmint, peppermint, and even wintergreen if they ever get around to making one with that. They are not all made in England. Germans call menthols “English” style. Though their snuffs are almost all oil based. As you see India and South Africa also make snuffs in this style. There are three distinct Dr. Rumney’s (not counting the defunct original) and also a Rumney’s Export. Traditional English Medicated snuffs that jump to my mind to recommend: McC Sturco (way too much menthol for me but maybe great for the menthol hound) McC JIP! (I like this one) GH CM best camphor-menthol balance IMO also check my reviews of the basic WoS ones in this recent thread: http://snuffhouse.org/discussion/comment/309108 To my knowledge (though I have not sampled them) the 6Photo 6, 66, and 666 are true English style menthols, not just an Indian take on the style. 6 Photo created them with some input from the Snuffhouse community. Note the tin design looks like the J&H Wilson and No. 66 being the upside down 99. As far as I know the No.6 is moderate menthol, and 666 was created as a bit of a joke to have a devilishly large amount of menthol. There are literally dozens in this style, it could take a long time to find a favorite, and that’s not including simply mentholated flavored snuffs.

There is some suggestion that menthol increases the anti depressant effect of nicotine by allowing certain alkaloids to remain in the bloodstream for a longer period. I can only find evidence of this in relation to menthol cigarettes though. My personal recommendation would be McChrystals Original and genuine, though it is one of the milder camphorated menthols with a touch of bergamot and some other herbal element that might be sage.

I’ll echo the recommendation for GH CM, an excellent “medicated” snuff and IMHO the best snuff in the GH range

Great insight on medicated snuffs here, thanks Xander and others! I need to try those 6photo offerings, as well.
