Just picked this up at H. Poupart in Montreal: Could it be new packaging for O&G or Sturco? It will be my first mentholated snuff and therefore cannot be identified intuitively!
It’s O&G I believe, by the looks of the health warning, it might be a bit old.
Interesting. After a first go, I do find the menthol part “super intense”. Having no frame of reference doesn’t help. If it’s of any consequence, the stuff is still relatively moist compared to the MC SP I got from the same shop months ago, leading me to believe it’s newish. By health warning did you mean the one on the top sticker or the one on the side added by the government?
The side label is the Canadian. My old Smith’s bottle came from Canada. The top label is the pre EU, (EEC or whatever it called itself in those days…we’re talking 1990s here, maybe late '80s). Anyway, my guess is that its English Menthol not O&G. You should write to McChrystals and show them. Ian is very personable and enjoys fan mail, I’m sure he’d get a kick out of this. Edit: Old is not bad though, if that seal was maintained, I can beleieve it still tastes fresh.
Damn. That is old, and hilarious. Surprised it kept so well.
Actually, now that I think about it, It could be a bit younger. Some of the labels they used for export were still the old ones I guess since they couldn’t use them in the UK. I have a McC SP with that warning label. There were no warning label requirements for snuff in the US at least until Silver Dollar stirred the pot, and the gov couldn’t figure it out, and required it to be labeled as oral tobacco. So you have an old label. The snuff could be much newer. Not sure precisely when the supply dried up there.
I bought the same tin from a local tobacconist, and it did not seem old at all. It was very fresh.
It’s not English Menthol, nor Sturco, nor O&G. McChrystal’s did have a snuff called just Menthol. I have it listed on my snuff list. Edit: I know that they had it in stock in 1965.
I have one of those tins, it definately ain’t O&G, might be English Menthol but I never had EM so i can’t say for sure
Well they always seem to have “Original and Genuine” printed at the top. E.g. http://www.mcchrystals.co.uk/snuff/s-p.html @Xander, I emailed Ian after ordering a new O&G directly to see if he would comment.
Gheez, when are we starting “The Nose Knows” detective agency?
That’s the list of snuffs from 1965, that I was reffering to:
@Filek I’m willing to wager that even the “Menthol” on your list is the “English Menthol” of today. @chrstphrhrt You can direct him to your photo and post here if you like. He does have an account here, but not checked in in awhile
Let’s wait for Ian’s reply then. PS: Congrats on finding such a lovely tin, chrstphrhrt. Something a collector would be proud of.
To note, I did provide a link to Ian in the email.
Here’s his response! Guess it’s a special recipe. – Dear Mr.Hart, This is a dry menthol snuff packaged in this way for the Canadian market. I trust this answers your question. Regards, Ian D.McChrystal
Now I’ve got to get me some of this!
I also bought a tin at H Pouparts. Really great dry, fine snuff. I read the explanation that was given in regards to being offered to the Canadian market. Is it still being manufactured or are we going to be looking to stockpile what’s left?
