A big thank you once more to the gentleman who introduced me to this wonderful product by sending me a BIG sample. This is an AWESOME snuff, nice and strong but very more ish. It’s fine ground, beautifully moist, pure clove with an everlasting stay. Make sure that when you sniff it you won’t be touching anything else for at least an hour. The aroma keeps coming back. Landed on my favourites list straight away. Never want to be without it ever again. Just be warned: This is an aggresive aroma which will infiltrate all your other snuff in no time. It should be kept seperate from any other snuff. I think it will be best kept in a glass jar, away from all else. Although I have a Dholaia smash box filled with this lovely snuff, I’ve ordered some more just to make sure that I will see the winter through. It makes me feel warm and cosy and I’m sure it will keep the flu and colds away.
Well I’m glad you liked it Pieter. Just about everyone I’ve sent this snuff to has loved it. I loved it so much, I got a half kilo of it. Best snuff in the world if you ask me!!
I agree its an excellent snuff. I got 200g and have used half of it already. Need to get some more. Stefan
I’m sure this snuff is brilliant if you like pure clove pleasure. Unfortunately I don’t - it is too much for my delicate nose. I’m glad I only bought one of those piddling minor tins. I will blend it with something else perhaps one day.
Damn iam still waiting for the sample Leman sent me Thank you man .
It’s one you either like, or you just don’t… I like this a lot and after the fiddly little tins got this direct from the mill…Great.
Just received a sample of this snuff from Leman (thanks man) . and its amazing !
@ap, Eu gosto d, ele sou grande.
I like this one but it is very strong. In fact, too large of a pinch and the clove oil changes to a mix between fire hot cinnamon and a metallic twang. Try mixing it with a menthol if you’re feeling brave. Toss some L260 in there and it will get your attention. I’ve created my own clove snuffs using regular powdered clove as well. One of the rare non-mentholated blends that will give you a hard burn by itself. I’ll probably order some in the future for Christmas mixes but its just too much for me to use that often.
It’s not for the weak-nosed, but if you like it you probably love it. I’ll have a bump right now.
It does give you that fresh clove smell in crowded elevators. Eskimo kissing gloss.
Took a pinch right now. Agh, this is so nice but, I admit one must be careful. I did a “backhand” sniff this morning and inhaled a bit to hard. It landed up in the back of my head, causing severe pain for a couple of seconds!! But I took some more straight away by pinching and, it is so gooooooooood. This is one of two snuffs my wife does not complain about. The other one she likes is Dholakia Ganga. I will rather not mix it with L260, I’m not brave enough for such a challenge.
If this snuff is too intense, try airing it out for a day or so. It seems to mellow out quite a bit if you do this. It still won’t be an easy going snuff, but you should be able to take it without crying. Maybe
I got 42g of this direct from the mill in February. Just been topping my snuff box up and I see I’m half way through it, and of cause I have an assortment of other snuff I take. This is a realy good snuff if you like clove, and I do.
John, the only issue I have with this snuff is the long lasting aroma which stays for so long. Maybe I should decide on a “clove morning” and snuff clove only until midday. Then rinse my nose before I switch to another brand for the rest of the day.
Pieter, I never have that problem, I can take clove quiet a few portions for a hour or so then go to Mac’s Mild Lemon, or any over millers type of snuff with no problems.
I’ve just now followed the Clove with some Dholakia Sparrow Cool and the two matches up quite nicely!!!
Try Manjul, that has clove in it.
I prefer DeKralingse Pompador to this one.
If you like McC Clove, try Samuel Gawith CCC. Although I don’t think it has cloves in it (it is made with root herbs), it has a hot ginger spicy intensity, moderated slightly by subtle menthol.
I’m not man enough for the clove either. Sometimes I like to take it because it reminds me of when I started snuffing. I’ll dig it out… Phew, this is the only snuff that makes me pull a funny face, for ages as well. Ouch.
If you like this Clove snuff, I think you’d like Dholakia Manjul snuff. I find it very similar, and it has a slight coolness to it too.
@ tom502 I like McC Clove and I do like Dholakia Manjul. But there is no comparison between the two snuffs. Manjul is a light fine snuff with some clove in there, almost like the American snuffs (US Smokeless Rooster comes to mind) Whereas McC’s Clove is a full bodied British type and very strong on the Clove.
I just ordered McC clove and I usually don’t like clove. You guys got me so curious! Not so crazy about the manjul for some reason. Edit: Just did the Manjul again, the flavor is VERY nice! I can’t explain it, this one always ends up giving me a sour taste in my throat. It’s not like I’m a newbie and this is really the only one that does that.
Hmm, well, to me, while different, I found the essence similar. It is different, in that the Manjul has a cool mint essence, but the main flavor I get is Clove, and that reminded me of the other straight Clove, but yes, they are not “the same” at all. But I do think if one likes the straight Clove, they would, I’d think, like this too.
miamimark If you order a standard tin of clove to try, it wont break the bank. Thant’s a standard tin shown next to a standard J&H Wilsons tin if your familiar with those.
Seriously
Yep I got fed up with the little tins that would just overfill a onefortheroad box and ordered 2 X 21g Tins made up for me at the mill.
I ordered the 8.75g today. I’m not familiar with the other tin, so I’m not sure if it’s the same. Basically I’m really liking very STRONG snuffs, so this one sounds like it fits the bill. I got my O & G tin months ago and didn’t really care for it at all. I re-visited it recently and now it’s almost gone. I ordered a 21g tin today from NR. I’m sure I’ll acquire a taste for the clove eventually.
Mark, the blue tin is 1’’ 5/8 X 1"1/4 and just under 1/4 deep. or 4cm X 3cm and 1cm deep.
Hey Snuff Head is this J&H Wilson in the picture the same of Medicated 99 ?
Hi ap Como é? Now that was discontinued some time ago. That was a full menthol, the Medicated is a little sweeter but still cool.
I never realized there was a J & H Wilson. I guess I always thought you guys were talking about WOS. Oh well, more to try!
Sorry whisperd
Just got my NR order with the McC clove. WOW. I really like it! My eyes watered a little, but no searing pain. I feel like someone passing my house could probably smell the clove!
You guys are making me jealous. This is one I still need to try. I catching up to Leman in numbers of snuffs owned, and so many still to go! Arrgh!
You want some clove Xander? I can send you some if you’d like. I’m getting close to 300 snuffs now, how many do you have?
I Just finished adding my newest arrivals to my invnetory. The new count is 171. However, I’ve manged to empty a couple of containers in the last couple of days of things I don’t need to re-order anytime soon. So I really don’t have 171 on hand. I do have doubles of 6 or 7 though. I didn’t count homemade blends in that figure. I also didn’t count the vintage ebay ones I haven’t opened yet. Please don’t send me any right now. I’m desperatly trying to make room in my snuff drawer! Once some of the bulky kitchen containers and snus cans are emptied, I’ll have room again. (These containers are good for emptying a snuff that comes to you in a bag, like a Pöschl schmalzer, or a sample bag) I might have to find a different place for my pipe gear! Then I will start chasing you again! You’ll be at Filek levels by then, though! Did you win that lot of 9 on ebay?
Opened the day with some McC Clove…thanks once more Leman.
I woke up real early, about 5am, and just wanted to stay up. I made a pot of coffee, and had some Toque Quit. This one is very good.
There’s no way I could keep a hundred or more snuffs on hand. I’m too OCD about using things up and I have a chronic fear that my snuff will get stale. I do have a few staples always around tho, mostly American Scotches because of their availability where I live.
I just got my hands on a tin of McC clove yesterday. I know this post is kind of old, but I just wanted to say I love this snuff. The flavor is just out of this world and completely unique. I thought the Dholakia Manjul was supposed to be clove as well, but to me it taste nothing like this. Anyway, this is certainly a new favorite.
How do you hide the clove smell? I can smell it 50 feet away. That kind of puts me off…
@BB I don’t want to hide from the smell. I wanna bathe in it. What’s so strange is that for as strong as the aroma is, it doesn’t really have a big bite when sniffed. I also love the fact that it lingers for so long in the nose.
If you go to Indonesia like I have been 25 times, the whole country smells like Clove cigarettes. I am more concerned with the area around me. Snuff has taken the smell out of enjoying my tobacco. In the past I have been driven out to the backyard to smoke.
I use the clove and kamal right after a scotch. An ex use to complain about an “odor” after a scotch. I did a “smell” test last time I ran into that ex and she gave her approval!
Clove is one of the tastes that you just love, or dislike intensely. I just just love it but ermtony and two other snuff takers that use our local can’t stand it.
Clove… shudder!
Just thinking I never counted Penny, so that’s yourself three other snuff takers who don’t like it, lol!
I love it. And like Miamimark, I use it right after a scotch. Sooooo good!
My smoking friend, whom I’m trying to convert, visited me this morning. He admired the little McChrystals Clove tin and I offered him a pinch. Wish you could have seen his face!! He is used to smoking strong pipe tobacco and he loves a pinch of strong snuff but…the clove was a bit to heavy for him. I fell in love with clove at the very first pinch and it’s been in my daily rotation since then. Only problem I have is that Snuff Store only stock the 3.5g tins which is useless to me. I need a lot of this snuff.
I have thought about ordering 500g, but I have no idea where to get it.
Neither have I. How’s the NTSU going?
I’m kind of thinking that McChrystal’s online store might sell it in bulk. Too bad the PC I’m on is a dinosaur, so I can’t see the flash correctly.
I’m sure Ian McChrystal will sell in bulk if he can ship it to the USA. I emailed him and he did me two 21g tins.
Clove snuff is actually spelled c love
Email Ian McChrystal he sold me 200g of clove snuff for £6. His email adress is ian@mcchrystals.co.uk, email him and he will sort you out. Stefan
That’s a steal!
Ian was quite helpful when I got my 400g of the clove. I think I paid £15 for it.
I really need to get this one next time around. You guys that love it, really love it! I’m going to whisper myself a wish list.
Slightly tangential, but I’ve noticed that several other members here also smoke a pipe. If you like the flavor of cloves, you really should try Gawith & Hoggarth’s Bosun Cut Plug, a virginia flake flavored with clove oil. Its an interesting, and quite tasty, experience. It does leave a residual flavor in a briar, however, so you might want to try it out in a meerschaum or a cob to make sure you like it. Now that I think of it, I wonder how this would do ground up as a snuff… I might have to try that at some point.
Ok I have it. Good gravy! This is a wonderful snuff! It is now off the wish list and on the the “keep ample supply on hand” list
McChrystals really does make a nice product.
@Tom Is the clove snuff available in the 200g jars like O&G? I got this one with my last order and it’s certainly one of my favorites of all time.
Yes, I can get it. Special order though. Tom
Not to jump OT but its a simple thing to sprinkle clove powder into any snuff. Just go very easy with it since it is so powerful. I was recently surprised to find G&H Dr. Verys Full had clove in it. To me it tastes like chocolate and clove or maybe even pumpkin pie with clove added to it. In any case, I’ve made several clove concotions using pure clove powder including an awesome Christmas mix of Toque - Peppermint, St. Clements, Menthol, (and if you’re really brave, toss in some Molens A/P for that pine needle Chrsitmas tree effect.)
Sprinkle clove powder into snuff ? I would like to think that the clove scent in clove-scented snuff is more than just added clove powder, and I don’t think I would want to snort straight clove powder. If it is in fact that simple, then I may sprinkle a little cinnimon into some Toque Natural, or maybe a little chili powder (
I’ve used clove powder many times in snuff. It only takes the tiniest amount tho to get the flavor so you’re not really ingesting that much. Chili powder? I’m not brave enough to try that.
I was making pancakes a few days ago and adding cinnamon. As I was dosing it, it reminded me of snuff, so I said “why not” and took a pinch and snuffed it. It wasn’t bad and I’m still lliving to write this. It itched a bit after a few minutes, so I just blew my nose as I normally would. I guess I’ll have to try clove powder next.
Ian at McChrystal’s is a real gent when it comes to getting clove snuff to people who want it. I love this stuff and would love to use it all the time but it does get overpowering after a while.
cayenne mixed with water will clear you out really thourghly.
I introduced my GF to Mc Clove this weekend. She loves it. I think she wants to steal my tin!
I’ve been wanting to try the McChrystal’s Clove…so much so I made my own clove snuff while I was waiting for it. I was afraid I had made my own snuff a little too strong, and then the McChrystal’s Clove arrived. Wow! My intense little creation was nothing compared to the McChrystal’s.
I love cloves…and I see why people say that “if you love cloves, you’ll love McChrystal’s clove snuff.” It is intensely clove. That’s it. All about the clove, and it is like a little bit of clove-tough-love. It gives you a punch and a burn, and then that scent stays with you quite some time.
Very nice.
Mark
Whoa Mark, dug up an old one! I like it! Intensely clove is right - I don’t smell anything but. I’m tempted to cook with it hah. When I was brand new to snuff I got this one, and not knowing any better, put some in my only snuffhouse tap box. Put it through the dishwasher, and the scent remains. I have a stinky job, and this is what I take to work. If only it wasn’t healthcare… I’d love to offer some to my coworkers. Good stuff!
I like digging up older posts on a topic, rather than starting new ones. Just continues the conversation. :-)
When I opened the little McCrystal’s tin it looked and smelled like they just filled it up with powdered cloves!
I can totally believe this would ghost any snuffbox you put it in…
Mark
Tired this yesterday - love both the burn and the intensity of the Clove. I’ve made sure that it’s been my last pinch of the day (of mixed with my last pinch of the day) though, due to the power of its long legs.
