Another one for your list, Filek?Johnson’s Sneezeless SnuffI emailed the seller asking what else it said on the label and if it was a tobacco snuff. The response: NO, IT’S NOT TOBACCO SNUFF. AGE IS EARLY 1900’S (BECAUSE OF CORKED BOTTLE). COUNTRY IS U.S. EAU CLAIRE, WI… LABEL READS"HAY FEVER, CATARRH, AND FLU REMEDY. IF CONTAGIOUS DISEASES ARE PREVALANT, CLEAN BOTH NOSTRILS WITH THIS SNUFF TO DESTROY THE GERMS. PREVENTS THE FLU. A HARMLESS REMEDY. NONE GENUINE WITHOUT SIGNATURE. I’m curious, but also unsure about it. Not sure how to transfer the picture here.

I

interesting… Wonder how well it worked if at all…

Z

well, as for effectiveness, laudinum used to be sold through sears for cranky babies. I’d imagine it worked quite well.

X

mmmmmmmm…laudnaum… actually you’re not too far off. Many old nasal remedy snuffs (or remiedies for other things) were opiates. This one could be one.

Z

And the bidding goes sky high… opiates work well for many things, not the least of which is boredom…

Z

damn, a quick googling says this may well indeed contain morphine. I’ll report back when I win the auction. EDIT: I’d guess this one is nothing more than menthol or the like.

S

It’s a poor quality photo, but I’ve tried to enhance it for you. ***

T

I think a powdered metholated non-tobacco snuff would be good. Are there any available?

S

Hello Tom, The Kralingse Snuif en Specerijen Compagnie has Mentholin, a tobaccofree snuffpowder. Jaap Bes.

Z

Tom, Poschl has Snuffy Weiss. Essentially sugar and menthol. I kinda enjoyed that one til it went through the wash in my pocket.

C

I know how it feels to put snuff through the was. Comes out in a big clump.

Z

Actually snuffy weiss, being mostly sugar, comes out in one big runny sticky mess. Thankfully I caught it before it made it into the dryer.

C

Ewww… that would be a mess.

M

I have the wos white. I was going to take a pinch to remind myself what it’s like, but i can’t open it!

Z

moisture must have gotten to it. use your mousepad like a jar opener and give it a good twist.

S

Keep nipping all around the edge of the tin.

M

My mousepad is a thick calculator / clock / pen holder thing! I really can’t be bothered, even when the tin was “working” it was a pain and i spilled it whenever I opened it. Thanks though…

T

Get a piece of paper, and get it open over that, and then move it all to another container.

M

I’ll probably put it back and forget about it! I have no patience so I’ll get frustrated and chuck it! I really don’t even remember why I bought it…

Filek, “who knows” is right. Could be menthol, could be tobacco, could even be morphine! Such things were regulated so loosely in that time. If something was sold as medicine, it was likely not regulated (or taxed). It might even be snake oil! The only way to really know is buy it and examinie it. What is “catarhh” anyway? I see this a lot nowadays when reading about snuff. I never came across it before my snuff life, and I don’t know how to pronounce it. Is it even an English word? @ zonesix: are you bidding? Let us know what you find with this! Tom502: most snuff companies have a “White” snuff (menthol and no tobacco). Jaap even has one without menthol. Pöschl and Bernard have a few each, I beleive, (look for the word “weiss”) and Wilsons has one. I have the Wilson’s - its not bad, but I just wanted to try it. I’ll probably finish the tin in 5-10 years and not get it again though. @snuff head: thanks for retrieving the photo!

S

@ Xander, your most welcome.

Z

xander yes. I will definitely post a review. perhaps making some samples available as well. I like to share. EDIT: Wikipedia knows ALL about Catarhh. Gross. I think…

Z

Outbid. I wasn’t going to, but I knocked the bidding up to $20 just because I was mad at someone for bidding against me. But it appears the person who won collects antiques like shaving items and medicine bottles, so he probably had a lot more money to throw at his hobby than I do to throw at mine. Thus, we will never know Matt Johnson’s Snuff. I’m sorry, I tried.

A

Great find and nice bit of social history. The conmtents could be anything from morphine to arsnic - usec as a remedy in tiny doses - to chalk. I don’t think there was any regulation at all in those days so best not tried if you buy it, catarhh is snot, put crudely.

X

ahh, too bad. Perhaps another one will surface

X

The seller was only quoting from the tube as I requested. Don’t blame the seller! Many medicines of that age contained opiates or alcohol or both. Both were considered medicinal. Tobacco was once considered medicinal. During prohibition you could get booze buy buying “medicine”. Also the famous “snake-oil” salesmen, usually just had some concoction of alcohol to cure whatever ailed you, then charged exhorbitant prices for it, only to leave town before anyone had a chance to test them!

X

yes. very true. But in the early 20th century there was no regulatory agency. Pharmacology’s Golden Age! Laudinum was prescribed for everything! I guess if the drug knocked you out, they figured you were resting and would get better.

A

Quite a lot of teething medicine had opiates in them, to give the infant a good nights sleep, the sleep often being permanent though. In actual fact you can still buy a linctus over the counter in the UK with Morphine in it - Collis Brownes. Beloved of druggies.
