You would be better off rolling up the dollar bills and stuffing them in your lip. Same goes for the American Camel snus. The only American snus worth a shake is Skoal, and its really not even that good.
Marlboro and Camel both are way to weak to satisfy any craving. I ended up being given a whole box of camel tins one time and I used them 4 pouches at a time in my lower lip like dip and that was semi-satisfying.
Marlboro has a pronounced Red Man flavor to it, very sweet. Kum n Go gas stations now sell General brand, so the good stuff is actually popping up in more and more places.
Not sure, all I know is that i have even passed on the free samples based on what feedback I have read, why traumatize oneself?
Maybe they did this snus to get people back to the cigs. Just a random idea anyway.
@Prismaster – You’re close. They’re designed for smokers in the times in-between when they can’t smoke. They don’t want you to be able to use this exclusively.
I was low in vitamin N the other day at WalMart so I bought a tin of Marlboro Snus. The clerk assured me they were plain tobacco. I almost puked. It must have been fifty percent aspertame. Yuck!
Of course Roderick. Big dip companies tainted the pool with junk snus so that nobody would want it, that way they can keep selling dip and keep their corner on the market.
this is a time I have to 100 percent agree with Cstokes4 why because I don’t know what the 4 is about but I agree that’s what american snus is about.
Roderick, not true. At least for Swedish Match and I’m betting Camel and Marlboro/Skoal. SM is actually ramping up efforts in the US. Most of the decrease in sales is due to the PACT Act and increased shipping costs. The reason some Swedish brands see a drop is the loss of internet sales. The last charts I saw (in February) show snus is steadily increasing in sales in B&M’s in the US. RJR and Altria sell a lot more than 4,000 tins a month.
Of course Cstokes4 has a point also. RJR and Altria are not making good snus so it’s going to be a uphill fight for real snus companies. At least they got the name into the American vocabulary.
I wish I could get more than General locally. I’m getting a bit bored with it, its about all I’ve had for a year. I even consumed my stock of frozen Claq Qui that I was going to sell to Juxtaposer 10 years from now ;-(
Tell me, good ol days only a few years back i could buy nice ETTAN for 3 bucks a can and go with it. Now, no distributor ships this stuff to Germany anymore. I know perfectly fine why the big tobacco companies are happy that the EU did the snus ban: many, MANY ppl would switch to snus if it were available like cigs.
I almost agree unagreed so I could agree again.
the American tobacco situation sux big time. See also what they’re trying to do with premium cigar sales: there may be no more walk in humidors, they want to ban flavored cigars, even I’ve heard minimize cigars nic content! Scary! I’ll try to post a link if I can find it. Hope that’s not too political, but I think it’s just the facts. The scary facts.
@Roderick: A distinction needs to be drawn between snus and dip sales. I had a friend with a tobacco shop several years ago. He told me his sales of dip and chew actually exceeded his sales of cigarettes. Of course, I live in rural Texas, and this may not be the case now with all the draconian laws since passed to hound tobacco users and turn them into anti-tobacco zealots. I think the problem with European-style snus is that it is marketed to yuppie types rather than the rednecks, who are the only real users of oral tobacco in the US. The problem is that the rednecks are turned off by the snus marketing approach while the yuppie types are not turned on. The solution to this problem, which I don’t see happening soon, would be to make it widely known that oral (not to mention nasal) tobacco use is much safer than cigarette smoking. But the US Food and Drug Administration would rather see people needlessly die than tell them the politically incorrect truth.
I have been able to find one stinking can of swedish snus in a store anywhere near me in the last three years. Every store has fifty different cans of dip. The American snus, Camel and Marlboro, just make me feel ashamed. I was hoping that SM would persevere with putting Ettan in many more stores, I am sure that a market could develop around it soon enough. The redneck population may be beyond hope, but there are a lot of real snus converts here, there just has to be that spark of recognition that there is a third alternative, but without any physical way to discover them, it’s somewhat hopeless. I still think SM could be a player if it wanted too, the lame American snus may have totally screwed up any opportunity though.
@Roderick, I spoke with a SM rep last night. I can’t say who, but they are high enough in the pecking order to know. Snus sales, SM, Altria and RJR, in brick and mortar sores, in the US is roughly 40 million packs/tins annually, with steady year to year increases. @ Whalen, at this point it looks like Ettan is not coming back any time soon. Sales were better than expected but not good enough. Plus SM is really focused on pushing the General brand. Unfortunately they are pushing it, in my opinion, incredibly slowly.
@bigmick do you know if they are going to put anything besides General on the market here? I’m keeping my local guy stocking it for me (bought 3 rolls today), so I’m doing my part in helping it get established in B&Ms, but frankly I’m getting a little bored with it, and the mint and wintergreen are just not my thing, so its just original and loose I buy. I’d love to see the Goteborg or Gotland range, or anything… They are also having a win a trip to Sweden contest as per a store display, so maybe I get a chance to stock up when I win.
@Xander, I don’t know what is being planned long term. I know in the foreseeable future they will be selling only the General brand in the US. Although I’m told there is a push to get a sterk, but it’s being resisted. If your B&M deals with Phillips & King/Kretek there are V2, Odens and Jakobsson’s labels available. (of course you likely knew that ) Having been to Sweden courtesy of SM, my advice is take a big suitcase , with locks(stuff disappears in Newark) , half empty and stock up at the Stockholm airport duty free shop. i brought back 15 rolls and a bottle of Scotch, Customs never blinked.
I tried the Marlboro Mint snus and Camel before I tried any real Swedish snus because the american brands were cheaper. Now that I can get General in about 5 varieties at a local tobacco shop I will never buy the Marlboro or Camel again. The difference is unbelievable. General and I can safely say any real Swedish snus is soooo much better.
Unbelievably, I found General loose at a local store for 0.99 per can. I cleaned out his stock immediately and instructed him to get as much as he can from the SM rep next week. Going in on Tuesday for my bounty.
@LincolnSnuff Ha, I did the same thing and to boot I had $1 off coupons I used 5 of them and had to pay $.94 for the six cans. I wish they had loose! but I am over joyed with what I snagged >:)
Well I have to say Marlboro is slightly better than the Camel, but seriously if you can get your hands on the real stuff do so the difference is drastic.
I have tried the American snus and it seems to be marketed at kids. Way too sweet, like candy and no tobacco taste. Also wonder why the Americanized Swedish snus does not have any reference to refrigeration like the real stuff. Have several cans of 12 month old General in the freezer that is just fine. Yes, I took some grizz to Sweden and nobody liked it. Got spit out ASAP. Needless to say I switched. Try Lucky Strike if you can, not bad.
the American snus is not intended as a stand alone product it’s marketed at smokers when they can’t smoke. It’s the Zima of smokeless tobacco.
They are all diapers as far as I am concerned. go loose <:-P
I know that this is about marloboro snus, but as far as american snus goes… I have to say that I owe camel snus a lot. (just hear me out first, lol.) When it first came out they flooded the market with free tin coupons and I even bought a few dozen of the coupons off craigslist for just a few dollars. I used this stuff almost exclusively for a few months (getting me off the combustible tobacco). After a while I started researching it online and it led me to Swedish snus that I may have never even found out existed if rj reynolds had not made the marketing push in the US. upon doing more research and finally placing an order of about a dozen different brands of both loose and portion Swedish from getsnus.com (back when they had a forum, lol) I learned that camel snus was nothing like what it was based upon (although I have read before was actually manufactured in Sweden). It was very inferior, maybe only good for dire needs. too sweet, a “desert” snus, if you will. but I owe it to camel that I now now better. Also, while going crazy researching Swedish snus, something more important was stumbled upon. Snuffhouse.org… This led me to finding some at a local head shopp. and then this led to niccotinerush and toques website. and mrsnuff, etc. and then I finally got some decent nasal snuffs in the mail. so yeah “american” snuff sucks, but I would have to think that I’m not the only american that used the internet to find out about about some of the finer things in life because of it.

Hey now, I need those diapers so I don’t get shit all over my teeth (pun intended)
Certainly not top grade tobacco by any stretch of the imagination. However, if I had to chose between Marlboro or Camel Snus, I would choose Marlboro. But ultimately Nick and Johnny, Oden’s, or hell even General would be much more enjoyable in my opinion. American Snus is just far too sweet and artificial tasting, but if I was desperate I think would cave and get some. But lets hope I never hit rock bottom, again any way.
