Hi,
Have many people tried making their own snuff? I have seen some snuff mills for sale, has anyone used these? A friend said that it is quite hard to actually make it because you need to grind the tobacco so finely so I thought I’d see how others have got on/
How dry should the tobacco be?
Thanks,
Stuart
Look on the FAQ, there’s plenty of info on how snuff is made.
There is no single way of manufacturing it as there is no single type of snuff. The milling machines that are used commercially also vary enormously, from massive old mortar and pestle type mills to modern atomising set ups, even industrial coffee grinders.
Making it at home is perfectly viable - but there are many, many variables, from the type of tobacco used, the curing, the snuff type you are aiming to create, the flavouring and maturing, and on etc etc. The FAQ has some specifics and recipes.
The snuff mills you mention will probably be just small home herb-grinders. They are not made specifically for snuff, but can be sold as snuff mills as they could also be sold as pot-pourri makers or whatever. Probably more commonly used to grind cannabis, but obviously they can’t be sold as that - in the same way that head shops sell ‘snuff-bullets’. Lots of uses, although ironically I doubt any have actually been designed with snuff in mind.
You can make snuff from a wide range of commercial tobacco products - eg RYO tobacco. There’s a few people here that do it and no doubt everyone has their pet methods. Read what you can, decide what you want to make and ask questions is the best way in.
