Has anyone tried this before? I have found that pipe tobacco has the most wonderful smell but for me the smell does not come through as flavor when I try and smoke it. I was thinking about grinding some of it up and using it as a snuff. I have this one that is Rum and Maple and the smell awesome but the flavor does not come through. Maybe I will grind some up this weekend.
I think you will find grinding Rum and Maple will not work for snuff. It will probably just become a gummy mess because of the high propylene glycol content which is added to drug store tobaccos to keep them moist. I find aromatic tobaccos never taste like they smell. In fact generally the worse a tobacco smells the better it tastes. The chemicals and flavourings burn badly and taste acrid. Try an English blend which is pure tobacco and see what I mean.
I’ve had success with non-aromatic pipe tobaccos. The SG Brown Rope made a lovely snuff. I reckon Nachman is right about the potential problem with aromatics, though you could possibly try drying it out in a very low oven.
Do a search, I’m sure there are other threads on this around here.
I just ordered a pound of SG Cannon Plug from SmokingPipes. Just because I could. I’ve been waiting for plug stock to return to the US, and heard at the pipe forum that they had it. I am looking forward to it, it’s one of those love it/hate it blends, apparently. Honeydew scenting. Has anyone here ever made snuff from it?
I haven’t but I’ll be very interested to hear how it turns out.
I’ve used flavoured pipe tobacco to make snuff. Just make sure that it’s dry enough to grind. I’ve used rum, cherry, coffee, brandy flavoured tobacco which I’ve left in direct sunlight to dry. Very good and even better if you mix it with a bit of cigar snuff.
Cob Plug from Sam Gawith makes a tasty, stout black snuff with a tonquin scent. Grousemoor Plug snuff is a little lighter and has a nice scent but the drain is somewhat bitter. Nachman got it right. Next time I want to try GH Dark Plug. Snuffgrinder mentioned that Erinmore flake snuff commands a high price in West African markets. I like Pieter’s idea of mixing in some cigar tobacco; sounds like a winner.
Stitch, Dark plug makes a fabulous snuff. Got the Cannon Plug in. I smoked a bowl, and the scent was pleasing, but quite cloying. Once the bowl became ashed part way, the flavor actually blended well with the fine tobacco they use. I thought it would have a nice room note, and it did, but it seems to switch between pleasing and cloying. It reminds me of the scent of an old air conditioner in an old hotel room, polluted with smoke and air freshener, but without the nastiness-if you can understand this. I can usually smoke most blends without getting complaints from Mrs Sprang, but this one, she did not like. I am actually kind of scared to try snuff made of Cannon Plug. Whew, it is very strongly perfumed. I let my wife smell the jarred plug, and she literally gagged. lol I will go ahead and make a small batch, just for fun. Will post results later. Edit: I have been spending some time with Cannon Plug, and now must recant my words. This is really a nice blend hidden in the perfume. I let some dry out a little after rubbing out, and it was much better. Some of the heavy scent aired off, and the result is a very pleasing smoke. The aroma now subtle and it is very nice. Slightly sweet, smooth, no tongue bite. Very fine tobacco used in this plug, gorgeous golden virginias. I cut a 1" cube off for snuff. It has been chopped in a coffee “cutter”, and is drying in prep of snuff-making. I better take it out of the pipe cabinet, lest it pick up stale bowl smells. I think this is going to be a winner. Update coming soon. Edit: OK, I finally made some snuff from the Cannon Plug, and it is really good! I am very happy with how it mellowed out as a snuff. Fresh out of the jar it is too much to take, but after a nice air-out, it has mellowed. It is a long-lasting flavor, to me it has tones of vanilla, honey, and angel food cake. It is a wonderful dessert snuff, with a decent lift, and easy on the nose. I didn’t notice a bad drip either. I intend to dry it and grind it further, maybe toast some.
Subtitle Thuoc Lao I made some snuff from this new offering from Toque, and I like it quite a bit. In the bag as leaves, it smells somewhat like a tea. I stripped the stems out and ground with a fine mortar and pestle. It grinds out very nicely, a nice tan color, fluffy, yet if you want an aggressive pinch, it holds together well. The scent is natural tobacco. It tastes very different from Rustica, I would say the rustica is much sweeter. This is more of an herbal flavor, not like thyme or oregano herbal, maybe tea-like herbal. I intend to try a green tea snuff, using this as the base. It is fairly potent. I can feel a few pinches taking effect very well. I have not tried smoking it yet. I was surprised to google it and see pictures of people with bong-like apparatus. I imagine this is where the original bong idea came from. Thanks to Roderick for making this available to us!
ok Sprangalang, some how you managed to twist my arm. I guess I now need to buy some. I keep telling myself, I don’t need anymore snuff!.. but you make it sound so good! Not to mention, I googled that a few night back and saw the same as you did, a big bong like thing and kids even smoking it, ha I have made snuff out of the Cannon boll and it turned out very good
Iggy, was that Cotton Boll? That makes an awesome snuff, eh? If you like Cotton Boll, you will like this.
I am new to snuff and I’ve tried making snuff out of 4 types of pipe tobacco so far. I am loving every bit of this new hobby! I’ve used Anniversary Kake, which is my favorite snuff so far (never tried ‘proper’ snuff from a tin, only what I’ve made), Shortcut to Mushrooms, Larry’s Blend, and C&D’s Sunday Picnic. Shortcut and Larry’s have an excellent latakia content which is lovely up the nose, especially as a little wake-up for the nostrils. Anniversary Kake is becoming the all-day snuff. I find myself carrying it around in my pocket and applying at least twice an hour, but usually more. Sunday Picnic is a more powerful flavor with all that perique and turkish izmir and it always makes my nose run like mad after a couple minutes so I only use it if I’m just sitting around with a handkerchief and relaxing. I have Luxury Twist Flake, Luxury Navy Flake, Nougat (Stokkebye), and Balkan Flake (Gawith) coming in the mail today. Can’t wait to make some more snuff and give it a shot! Hopefully Nougat will dry out enough to grind. People seem to have little success with turning aromatic pipe tobaccos into snuff.
