Ideally I would get feedback from Roderick or Snuffster, but if anyone else has 2 cents to chime in, you are more than welcome.
So I am buying menthol crystals and eucalyptus oil off of amazon. I am a menthol hound, and one of the snuffs I had tried supposedly had eucalyptus oil, and that was high it had kind of a unique burn characteristic. I won’t be “making” snuff per say. but I want to revitalize snuff that has lost its potency, or menthol snuff that didn’t have it toi make new and unique flavors.
So I have been thinking about how to apply it, and here is what I am thinking: Crushing up the crystals and adding them directly to the snuff sounds like a bad idea all around. Sticking crystals in a bag next to the snuff to try and get it to sublimate may not be efficient, and it may not be easily controllable. Option 3, and it is the one I am assuming will work best, Is to create a solution that is basically water, with menthol and eucalyptus oil dissolved in it, and lightly sprits the snuff material. Agitate, keep in sealed container, and then agitate often to try and homogenize it.
Assuming method 3 is what everyone advises, what concentration to what volume of snuff are we looking at? I will be shooting for something near Hedges strength.
I think option 3 is ideal for a small home batch. Make your solution and spray finely on to the snuff. The exact method of doing that is debatable - the important part is to get even coverage to avoid getting pockets of highly mentholated material in the general body of the snuff. I would use a maturing ‘bin’ that is wide enough to give you a good size surface area of snuff to spray. Spray and agitate until you have an even distribution of the solution in the flour. The strength of the solution can only be judged by you because it is down to how you enjoy your snuff, including how your nose interprets snuff, and the grind and type of tobacco used. Most snuff makers would advise using distilled water, or the most neutral bottled water you can get. You would probably get away with tap water, but there is some danger of chlorine contamination depending on your location, even mould spores.
If this is your first attempt I would advise against trying to make the whole batch in one go, the reason being is that you can never really tell how well things have gone until you take the first pinch; doing that and wishing you had added just a little less of something is an avoidable heartbreak. Make a small test batch at a low solution concentration and scale it up when you reach the desired flavour/strength. General points: use food grade ingredients only and an odour free plastic maturing vessel with an airtight lid. Even spritzing evenly it will still be better after a few days maturation. Obviously, cleanliness is very important - you might want to use a non-taint broad spectrum anti-septic/anti-fungal on any equipment prior to use. If you are using oils in the solution then shake the spray bottle as you are spraying, otherwise you could just get the concentrated part of the solution as the oil is not soluble. Make notes so that anything you like can be reproduced and you can pick apart the method if it doesn’t turn out that well
Thanks a lot @Snuffster. I am going to keep that in mind. At this stage I am not actually “making” my own snuff so much as just doping snuff I have bought with menthol, or add it where it was never was before. If I come up with anything interesting I’ll be sure to let you guys know, as I know I am not the only one who really enjoys a menthol hit. I figure this has to be cheaper than buying RedBull or Hedges, I love RedBull, it just isn’t worth it at the price per gram.
BTW I really enjoy your Dragun. Good job.Dragun with icebreath perhaps? We’ll see.
Lol, you don’t know how near to it you got with ‘icebreath’, watch this space:) Glad you like Dragun.
I hear you about not making it from scratch, you should get good results with the spritzing approach. If you do gets some good results post your methodology and ratios - it all helps the next guy along.
It is said you are what you eat, I am guessing if snuff is a major part of your diet then @ Snuffster is indeed snuff. I can see it now in his last will and testament that his remains to be cremated and instilled in his final batch of Abraxas snuff. Just like Ed Headrick the father of disc golf and inventor of the wham-o frisbee had his ashes molded into flying discs
I think I was slipping in and out of different dimensions there; this one and the snuff one. The snuff dimension comprises of two mighty armies at permanent war over the best way to take pinch.
