Making latakia and perique snuffs

I’m planning on buying a small quantity of gawiths latakia and perique blending pipe tobaccos with the intention of having a crack at making a pure snuff from each. Any hints on what I should do other than just grinding them up would be appreciated.

Hi @Talljim. There isn’t a great deal more to it than just that really; coffee grinders work pretty well. Store and mature in sterilised glass jars and case as/if required. Remember that back in 17c it was very common to use a carotte (like a sort of rustic cigar I guess!) and just grate it with a snuff rasp to create snuff. Best of luck with it anyways

@MisterPaul: A carotte (een karot) is NOT a sort of rustic cigar, but a bundle fermented tobacco leaves. It is one of the oldest methods of making snuff. At the moment we are in the last fase of producing a historical karotten snuff: St. Omer No 1. I’ll keep you posted when it is for sale. Jaap Bes.

Please do! I’d be very interested in purchasing one. Seems you DID NOT like my carotte metaphor…

@Talljim, How did the experiment go? I just spent a long weekend in Lombok, one island east of Bali and one of the major tobacco growing areas of Indonesia. I picked up 600 grams of a good, local tobacco used for roll-your-own and for chewing from the farm gate for nine bucks. Smokes quite well, but I really want to try to turn it into snuff. Gonna try to get the washing soda and a mortar and pestle to see if I can improve the quality of my product. I’ve already confiscated a pair of pantyhose to use as a filter. Would like to hear more about how your attempts worked out. I can’t help thinking pure perique snuff might be asking for trouble. It’s a strong condiment tobacco, as I’m sure you know.
