Well, this is a thread I’ve been meaning to start for a while now (as I didn’t find one). The topic is: Makeshift snuffboxes/paraphernalia. What do YOU snuffhousers do, when you absolutely just have to take some snuff along, but a whole tin is unwieldy, and your lovely 19th century silver plated box is nowhere to be seen? Or when you just can’t be arsed to get a proper pinchful of snuff stuck under the fingernails you forgot to cut? This is my first makeshift: See, it’s even a brand name product. Holds just about twice the amount of a Toque mini-bullet, and it was nice and easy to pour a noseful on the back of the hand from it. My second makeshift:
“What have you there laddie, a boxful of mints, you say?” (Imagine a thick, posh british accent. Not that I can talk with one.) “Nay,” says I, "but something better."
I mean, the fit is darn near perfect. And as the Toque WnH seems to be fine enough to leak out of the bullet, this’ll serve me well. And now, folks, please. Go crazy.
Altoids Smalls come in a nice box that looks a lot like the above. A piece of clear tape covers the hinges from the inside and the box doesn’t leak…very much. I like it for coarser snuffs. I have also used the small brown glass bottles used to package ginseng extract. A real cork stopper from the hardware shop, et voila. It holds about three grams of toast. A small screw eye in the cork eases removal and a loop of string through the eye keeps the cork from getting away.
haven’t got the photo ability at present. But the little steel cylindrical pill boxes from walgreens ($5 maybe) and a Czech pipe tool spoon hold a good long days worth of Rooster, Levi Garrett, Brazil Feinst or Standard. bought a couple of small metal flasks, , maybe 2.5 x 2.5 x .6 inch, metal cork lined cap, (miniature version of the ones you see with a confederate battle flag painted on them), holds about a weeks worth, never dries out and is perfect for laying out a line or just filling the anatomical snuff box. Fits the pockets well regardless of mode of dress. Tried other schemes over the years but these two are the most successful. Regards,
@gbrhys you mean metal flasks like these you normally fill with alcohol? That sounds like a good idea, I’ll buy one of them and check how it works for me.
Yeah, it’s a capital idea. Too bad all I ever see here are the 8 oz (2+change dl for those of you who prefer the metric). Just make sure you remember which pocket holds the booze, and which one the snuff… A-a-awkward. Hmmm… I spy with my little eye… a small Jägermeister bottle! You know, like those small taster bottles! It seems like it’d be perfect! Well, for 25g or so, but still. Wonder if my baby brother will let me have it (contents included, ofc).
biskup666, Yup! those are the ones, the one in use has been used for years and all the markings are too worn to read, IIRC they are about a 2 oz. size maybe 4 oz at the very most. Mittens, Airline size liquor bottles work well, cap sucks, replace it with a cork or find a durable one somewheres, flatter bottles like Crown Royal are kinda classy, even with a cork Regards
Around my parts, we have a candy called Tic-Tacs that has a very nice dispenser…looks like it is almost made for snuff actually.
Bart - it’s actually made to keep the pot in and protect the smell from leaking I have a really small Jack Daniel’s bottle (0.5 dcl, I think) somewhere, that would be perfect for snuff storage. Now only to find it.
They sell these little corked bottles at a little bead shop not too far from me. I was considering laying bead wraps on them and making necklaces that would hold snuff. I think they could be cool…
The only problem I have with the candy boxes (such as the one I keep the bullets in) is that they were made for small blocks of candy, not for ground tobacco. So there goes the airtight lid, here come the old pals, spillage and leakage.
This is the closest I could find to the little flask I’ve used for about 20 years now. http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Steel-Mini-Keychain-Flask/dp/B000U8CZLY/ref=sr\\_1\\_185?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1279238765&sr=1-185 I’m going to order one as a spare, looks like my others are long missing. Hope that helps!
And I’m liking that one, gbrhys.
I just use old 5g or 10g tins. Haven’t even managed to label them so it’s kind of lottery when I go out. Only McCrhystals O&G 10g tin still has it’s own label. All my snuff is bulk or in 21-33g containers.
I do that too. I have a bunch of the toque tins I peeled the labels off to affix to some bulk storage to label them and I refill those as needed. Ken
