Just curious if anyone is still able to buy new bottles of RR Mills Maccoboy snuff.  The last reference I could find to someone buying it locally was in 2014.  Southern Georgia was the last place I’d heard of it being sold new.

People have very generously offered to share some of theirs with me, but I still have half a large bottle–it badly needs rehydrating though.  I can make do with what I have, but I’d love to know if anyone still has access to new bottles.

M

Last time I was in my local Food Lion, I thought about asking for whoever puts in the Swisher orders, but decided I’d leave it alone. I’ll do this next time I’m in there, and see if I can find out who’s placing the orders and if they can get some of the rarer varieties in. I’d say don’t get your hopes up, as Swisher is notoriously ignorant of their own product lines, but it’s worth a shot. They do carry Railroad Mills Sweet at the store, so it it’s possible that it can be done.

M

This place in Georgia appears to sell it.  I sent them a message to confirm and ask the price.

N

Will they ship to US residents of Washington? I’m probably thinking no.

M

I haven’t heard back from them.  As the photo was from 2014, it may be that they no longer stock it.

J

@MrBrooke I asked my local Food Lion manager about stocking Checkerberry. He said they use Hackney for tobacco products and that it would depend on if they could get it from Swisher. You are correct about Swisher. I have emailed them before and they are not helpful. Still, I suspect they have warehouses full of snuff they are unaware of. The link by Mike_B is all there is on Maccaboy. I found a tobacco wholesaler in Lowell, NC. As I recall, it is in Gaston county, just outside of Charlotte. According to reviews, anyone can walk in and buy. My guess is you pay tax then and there versus a retailer. Anyway, they stock a lot of snuffs, unfortunately, Maccaboy is not on the list. http://www.candbdistributors.com

M

I just checked the link and it called those little cans “pocket bottles”. Has anyone tried carrying them in his pocket? I’ve been afraid the plastic lid would pop off and I’d be left with a pocket full of stuff.

J

That has happened to me. I just pinched from what was in my pocket. I no longer put snuff from those type of cans in my pocket. The pocket can is the little 1 ounce can (about 30 grams).

H

I have carried them in my pocket, but not in my jeans. Usually in cargo pockets of pants or in coat pockets with no issues.

M

Could someone in the area call Blue Ridge Tobacco to see if they still carry Maccoboy? The only phone I have is from work, and they wouldn’t appreciate a long-distance charge to a GA tobacco wholesaler. Maybe we could pool resources on a case of 12 “pocket bottles” if they still have it.

J

I can call them. If need be, I can go to north Georgia for pickup.

P

I’d be down for a bottle or two of the RR maccaboy snuff if Blue Ridge has it.

J

@Psicko I hope they do, but I’m not going to get my hopes up. It’s 8AM now. I’ll call them at 9.

J

@Psicko, @JosephJames, yes the Maccaboy is good snuff! If it could still be gotten fresh I would love to go in on that. Well, good luck guys!

J

I called them. No direct retail. The helpful lady on the phone gave me the names and numbers of four retailers they deal with that I will contact. If all goes well, I will pick up a case.

M

So they still have some? That’s fantastic news!  I would gladly buy at least 2 bottles.  I suspect supply is very, very finite.

Thanks for making the call, @JosephJames

P

@JosephJames I hope it works out.

M

Do any of you Georgia boys know where to pick up a can of Starr in the north Ga area. I’m in Canton.

J

So I called the first place and no answer. I had to get to work so I will try later. She gave me numbers for 4 retailers.

J

@markmcsnuffin you might try MrSnuff. He usually has some American snuff we can’t find. I just ordered some scotches from him yesterday.

M

Yeah @markmcsnuffin I just ordered two cans of Starr from Mr. Snuff.  It’s not cheap–$10 a can–but a can lasts a long time.  It’s my base snuff–nice and high in nicotine, and absolutely plain so doesn’t cause rebound.  People who can get it at their local Food Lion or whatever are lucky.  I think its main customer base is in North Carolina.

J

Another North Carolina grocery store chain is Ingles. They don’t carry the Swisher products. Instead they have Bruton, WE Garrett and some of the sweet dental snuffs. Scotches are expensive and I don’t know why. The ingredients are published and they are not many. Yet, 2 4ounce cans of RR Mills and one 1.15 ounce can of Superior set me back about $60 at Food Lion.

J

OK, got one store with a younger woman who was a snot on the phone. She called back and wanted $102 for a case. That’s $8.50 per 1 ounce can. I told her no. Next store was a nice, older lady who will have the snuff by Friday after next.

P

@JosephJames awesome. You rock.

J

Thank you, sir. We snuff takers are like a fraternity. Just trying to help my brethren. It would be awesome if MrSnuff could get it.

P

Yup. I feel the same way. Gotta keep what we can alive. Out of curiosity, what was the store that you found it at?

M

This is amazing news!  Great work, @JosephJames

I sent Mr Snuff a message alerting him to the news, so hopefully wider distribution will be possible at some point.

J

@JosephJames, thats awesome! Put me down for a few if you’re going to grab this. This is a very nice snuff and very very different than typical American snuff

J

I have never had it, so I am looking forward to it. Maybe you veterans can share what to expect. The key phrase in the PACT Act is profit. This will only cost the price of the can. Shipping is usually $4 including the mailing envelope. $8.50 the one lady wanted would be a fair price buying from MrSnuff, but not from someone an hour away. She claimed she would make .50 a can. That’s hard to believe. Any pocket can I buy at grocery stores is $5 or so and they use distributors like Blue Ridge. Anyway, she had a really bad attitude. The second lady sounded like someone’s granny and was very nice.

J

@Psicko the store was called Ranger. A convenience store. It’s in Murphy, NC.

S

@josephjames I would also be interested in helping you offset cost on 2 of those cans.

J

OK, SandwichIsles.

N

Interested in this if you’ll have any extras.

J

@noidea1263 We should have. I requested a case of 12. I am keeping one and we have a few others accounted for. Once we hit 12, that’s it unless people want more.

P

@JosephJames sweet. Looking forward to trying a can.

M

I would love to get Maccoboy back in stock. I would happily by 3 master cases for starters (432 units). I currently have to buy the other US snuffs from a retailer 6 hours drive away. Driving to Georgia would be a vacation… I’ll have to work on the wife for that one.

If anybody can help I would be much obliged. Basically I would need to know who is selling it; arrange payment; then if someone could pick it up on my behalf and stick some shipping labels on for me (which I would provide) that would be it.

Grab a couple of cans and the eternal gratitude of the forum members (me included) for your effort.

Dave

J

@MrSnuff the blue ridge tobacco wholesaler linked in this thread has it. They won’t sell to me but would probably sell to you. The lady I spoke with on the phone said they sell to retailers only. She is very helpful and was the person who answered the number on the website. If you can get them to sell to you, I could pick it up. I am close to Georgia and might be able to have the salesman for the northern counties meet me. It would be easy enough to take them to the post office and mail. Just let me know what you need done.

M

So happy we’re getting close to having Maccoboy available to the snuffhouse world!  If anyone hasn’t tried it, it is absolutely unique and wonderful.  It’s dark and moist, with a grind similar to Checkerberry.  It’s a relic of a bygone day, when nasal snuff was far more common.  It has a lovely rose scent that is not overpowering, plus a formidable nicotine kick.

It would make me very happy if we could generate enough interest in this snuff to keep it going.  Kudos to @JosephJames for helping with this.

S

@josephjames I would like to express my thanks as well and keep us informed of when you get ahold of it. This is one I’ve been interested in for a long time.

J

If all goes well, the case I requested will be at a gas station in Murphy, NC by next Friday. I just looked at the snuff category. They have a variety. They even have Mammoth Cave twist chewing tobacco!

M

I bought an unopened 5oz glass jar of this on eBay a couple years back. It was dried out, but after rehydrating it, it was pretty good. Whatever rose scent it had was long gone, but it was still almost a rappee, made with dark, rich tobacco. I’d love to see what a fresh batch is like. I live in Colorado, which is snuff desert. My local smoke shop carries Toque USA and Silver Dollar, but when I asked if they’d cosider carrying some of the Swisher snuffs, since they sell their cigars, the owner just flat out told me, “No!” She didn’t even know what nasal snuff was. when I took out a tin of Crumbs of Comfort and proceeded to take a gentlemanly pinch, she just looked at me like I was out of my mind! Sorry for the off topic rant, but I couldn’t help myself.

P

@mrmanos, at least you get toque usa. I only have silver dollar and Garrett sweet available locally.

J

Just got the phone call! Going Saturday to pick it up. $52.50 for the case! The snotty lady at the other store wanted twice that. Maccaboy is back! 11 cans will go to people who asked in the thread for it. One for me. If we run out, I can always get more.

S

That’s great. Can’t wait to try the fabled maccoboy.

J

I plan on going Saturday. Murphy is about 70 miles from me, as I recall. I sure hope I heard her correctly at $52.50 for the case.

J

OK, folks. I have my directions and am set to leave at 6AM. As of now, all 12 tins are accounted for. I am going to see if they would ship it to me in the future. The trip is 2 hours one way.

5

A 4 hour round trip for a can of snuff That’s determination for you! ^:)^

J

Well, it’s the fabled Maccaboy, so Barkis is willing.

S

So stoked…

J

One goes to Uncle Squinty. Perhaps he will do a review.

S

@josephjames Once you’ve figured out the offset per can and shipping shoot me a pm and we’ll work out details.

J

Will do.

J

OK. Got it. I took a nice, scenic drive through Nantahala. The pocket bottles are neat. I can’t get photos to post on the forum, so I had to make a link (below). I opened my bottle. Dark, coarser than most American snuff. The rose scent takes a backseat to the tobacco but is there. Plenty of nicotine in this. The store owner is willing to mail it to me next time, which is a good sign. https://goo.gl/photos/Y9DH36RdrTC4ZGyP9

S

Awesome. The bottles are interesting, very old timey.

M

Is it still moist and fluffy (i.e. reasonably fresh)?

J

Yes! Very moist and fluffy. Just stopped for a bio break and grabbed a big pinch. This snuff+scenic drive+music=elated me. Good nicotine bump from this. Depressed people should toss the SSRIs, grab a good, high nicotine snuff and put on some music.

S

Super cool of you to make the effort, @JosephJames  I’d definitely be interested in joining the next purchase.

J

@SHbickel Absolutely. I plan on buying 1 or 2 cases within the next 2 weeks. I will certainly send you some.

J

Cost per tin is $4.68, includes tax. Shipping is $4 and that covers the shipping envelope I buy at the post office. When yours goes out, I will message you the tracking number.

J

I’m behind the eight ball with work and school this week. I will be mailing everything out Monday, Tuesday at the latest. Thank you for your patience.

J

@JosephJames, cool! let me know, I sent you a PM

P

Did I make the cut for this order?

N

Add my interest for now or latter order. I’ll be happy with just one or two bottles. I have a “get me by amount” but some fresh for future festivities would really make me happy.

J

@Psicko Yes. I counted everyone up through the thread. You are in.

J

@nicmizer I will be getting more.

P

@JosephJames thanks a bunch. Let me know what I have to do on my part.

J

Uncle Squinty reviews it. https://youtu.be/GTLE5a7dKuE

H

Lmk if get more.I’m interested in getting some (Maccaboy).

S

Just got my maccoboy because I forgot to check the mail yesterday. This was unfortunately completely underwhelming for me. I sometimes make my own snuff from copenhagen moist snuff and this has almost the exact same scent, texture and strength. I would be hard pressed to tell a difference, cope possibly has a little more barnyard… maybe. This is still a great snuff I was just hoping for something I couldn’t have made myself. On the upshot it proves (to me) the evolution of American maccoboy/rappee into American moist snuff. Also, if you want to enjoy Maccoboy and can’t get ahold of any then buy a can of copenhagen snuff, leave the top off overnight and run it through a decent quality espresso grinder.

J

I used Copenhagen for about 20 years. I didn’t notice a similarity. Ah, well. We all have different tastes.

J

I have some maccaboy ( RR ) from the early seventies, can’t wait to compare!

N

^ ^ ^ Not! Maccoboy is not a gutter snuff. IMG_20170220_202350 Old school. One on left is full unopened, Lorillard is 98% full and on right is 50%.

M

Copenhagen is largely geranium flavoured/scented, as opposed to rose.

J

@nicmizer friggin awesome! I just bought one of the Lorillard bottles on Etsy

P

I just got mine today. It didn’t smell like Copenhagen at all to me. Not really sure what it smelled like. It didn’t smell like rose either.

N

Don’t even associate the two. Whoever thinks Copenhagen is anything resembling Maccoboy needs their head examined! Or should I say their nose! (or both).

J

@JosephJames, @nicmizer The lorrilard Maccaboy is insane. I’m really enjoying the fresh RR. Very similar to the original but more flavor intense ( and moist of course )

J

I will just say that we all have different tastes and scent is supposed to be the biggest thing for memory association. So, I can see where someone might make that association, but I didn’t. That is why we have so many varieties of snuff

Z

@nicmizer No reason to resort to namecalling. @SandwhichIsles and I may disagree on politics, but every person is free to smell what they smell.
