I was just gifted two tins of my first Madras snuffs…N.C. Super Special and TPS. Where have I been? Never had much interest in the Indian snuffs that I’d tried; too much like the incense burned to hide the aromas of other burning things. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Just not my snoot of snuff. Until now. Damn these are good! Great Vitamin N delivery, a scent like good cigar tobacco and a nutty backdrop. If there’s ghee in here I can’t find it scent wise, but the silkiness must be oil based; whether animal, vegetable or laboratory, I don’t much care. I’ve been hitting this since it arrived and am loving life. A cup of hot Assam tea with its malty character is my current beverage of choice. I think I found a source at a hookah site for easy money. Many thanks to my secret Santa (I’m keeping it secret to keep the wolves from your door).
What, no NB Madras!? We’ll have to rectify that, post haste. TPS is pretty good, but I don’t like it anywhere near as much as NB (can’t say I’ve tried NC, but it may be like NB if there is plain tobacco with occasional nutty notes and a whopping hit of nic).
@mecompco It would be my honor and pleasure to give NB Madras a thorough going over.
I’m not really into an obsessive search for “the strongest” snuff – I usually just worry if it’s “strong enough”. Having said that, I think these Madras snuffs are, in fact, the strongest snuffs I’ve ever had.
Where does one go to find this stuff? Is there a website?

I generally can’t stand that kind of Indian snuff, the ones that smell like an Indian temple. Or rather, I could take a pinch or two every couple of weeks, perhaps after a large Indian meal. I’ve never been able to bring myself to order Kailash, despite pretty positive reviews from large numbers of people, just because I’m scared it will be like that. But there are a lot of good, plain tobacco Indian snuffs out there, and some of them are really excellent. @chefdaniel, considering your appreciation for the good English toasts, in your case, I’d specifically recommend Dholakia Sparrow. It’s really like a very strong English toast. Not quite the subtlety of flavour that you get, say, with HDT, but great for when you want a strong nic hit. I often get “nicotine hiccups” from it, but in a good way. Very fine and dry and, as I said, unscented. I’ve heard tell the menthol version is very lightly mentholated, but I’ve never tried it.
You guys are making me feel selfish for not passing along my favorite snuffs anymore. I’ve really got to get it together. I shall fear no evil! It’s nice to see the sharing so mahalo for sharing the sharing.
@JakartaBoy Sparrow just went into my cart. Thanks for the heads up. What do think of the Dholokia Toasts? Unfortunately no NB Madras here, but it’s a start: http://hookah1.com/HOOOKAH2/index.php?route=product/category&path=6\_21
I’m with lunecat on the NB Madras. Not subtle but it makes up for that in sheer potency!
I got all my NB & TPS Madras type snuffs from @indiansnuff He can post them to you. I like snuff of all kinds for various reasons & I have to say the NB Madas ‘blew’ my head off with its nicotine contents; a bit on the crude side, as far as snuffs go - but VERY effective if you crave vit. N.
Agreed, it is in no way complex, but I like what scent there is and the nicotine can’t be ignored. This stuff gets me through the work day–the grind and moisture is perfect to dispense from the Posh bullets.
I must be the only person around who prefers TPS but they’re both excellent. I thought my NB had more than a hint of the snubbed-out-cigar/ashtray smell of bad FUBAR Grunt but this seemed to fade as I worked through it. The TPS is a bit milder and earthier. They’re both really excellent though and hold their own next to the best English toasts.
@horus92 I think these two Madras snuffs I have here give me a lot of cigar notes, without the perfectly described Grunt epic fail. Just for the helluva it I stuck my nose is this pile of Dominican Cibao Valley Seco I’m working with for an upcoming snuff. Sure as hell, it smells very similar to both Madras in my new Indian collection
What do think of the Dholokia Toasts?
@chefdaniel, of the Dholakia range, I’ve only ever tried Sparrow and White. I don’t know if Sparrow is technically a toast, but it looks, feels, tastes and acts like one, so I say it quacks like a duck. I should try some of the others one day, but I find it hard to imagine that they’ll beat the sparrow.
@chefdaniel, I will get you some samples of the Dholakia toasts as I have several. They are an extremely fine grind, a silky feel and different from the English type toasts we are used to.
@stogie As always, greatly appreciated. I’ve got some for you if I ever find out where they put the post office.
I use the bendy straw to blast NB. Fill it up about inch per nostril and launch. Pinch nose together and blow out excess. Helluva rush! Be careful though, NB is soo fine and dry you have to avoid breathing in during the process until it is set, or you will get it in your lungs.
@OleFactoryHugh That sounds pretty intense. Forget coffee in the morning. Whew!
