Losing my sense of smell

I was just wondering if any of my fellow snuff-takers have experienced this?

I suffered a nasty bout of bronchitis from January to about May/June this year. Then, about 6-8 weeks ago I noticed that my sense of smell had gone. My nose wasn’t blocked at all, in fact it felt very free, but just no smell at all. I got some nasal spray from the doctor mid-June and at the same time, for the first time since March 2014 I laid off the snuff.

So slowly my sense of smell returned and now it is back for about 80-90% of the time.

My question is, has anyone else experienced this, and what is your opinion of whether losing my sense of smell may have been (even partly) related to snuff use, or if it’s all the fault of the bronchitis?

Before anyone suggests it, of course I intend to return to snuff by way of experiment in small doses, and to monitor the situation myself, but I just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar? Thanks.

@thunderbird, colds and bronchitis can cause anosmia(loss of smelling). sometimes its temporary, but sometimes it is permanent. Also, some medications can probably cause it. If you have your sense of smell back, that is a good sign. Ive gone nose blind to certain snuffs, but never had a loss of smell.

I’ve had an impared sense of smell for decades. Work with what you’ve got, and do not be phased by changes in taste. More changes are yet to come. Go with it.

I had a bad sinus infection a few months ago. I was able to clear it in a few days thanks to some mentholated snuff, but my sense of smell was impaired for at least a week.

Medications can alter taste/smell

Sorry for your loss. My senses are all screwed. but I still enjoy the ritual .Just don’t ask me to describe any taste smells or levels of heat ,because it would not be what normal people would conceive to be actual.

It’s odd, but I feel that my sense of smell has improved since starting to snuff regularly.  (Probably because I’ve gotten off the smokes.)

I found that I had lost most of my sense of smell for a good year with heavy fichtenadel use, 2-5 grams a day. I got a sinus infection so I was off the snuff and gradually the sense o smell returned. I have now scaled back my intake significantly with no ill effects…

Was it a zinc spray? If so that’d do it.

i just lost most of my sense of smell after overtaking vicks sinex nasal spray (the active ingredient is oxymetazoline hydrochloride). i used it one time but exceeded the recommended number of sprays by one or two. i can smell the snuff but the scent goes away immediately. From the digging ive done on google i think it can be permanent but its not likely. i think mine will come back eventually but its a huge bummer. im never using nasal spray again!

@peacock  @thunderbird

i am in a similar situation, last year  think it was i binge snuffed a lot of snuff to the point it dried out  my nose. its been at a 10% of what it used to be. even strong scented snuffs are a bit hard to detect and usually only for a few seconds. only seems to be a problem with smelling snuff. everything else seems fine. i have had no success in bringing it back to normal

i havent tried the zinc yet but im not sure it would help. especially in this curious state. i need to take a break i bet but i cant put them out of my reach because i would just go back and get them again lol

Thanks for all the replies guys. Update - tried a few pinches the other day and so far so good.

I’m going to try a few more this weekend.

Just an update on my nose. its been 2 days and my smeller has gotten better. i bet it will completely be back to normal in a few more days

Tried a few more modest pinches yesterday and today and my sense of smell has once again disappeared completely. :frowning:

@thunderbird as much as it would pain you, I suggest taking a little time off if you can.

Yes, I agree, I don’t think I have much choice.

how have you fared? im beginning to learn the main enjoyment of the scent of the scent of snuff is during the act of taking it followed by a rapid decrease to a lingering just barely detectable scent that lasts longer
