I have a triple tech and the slide for the tap hole and spoon is getting loose. Are there any tricks to tightening the seal up? I thought about maybe coating the surfaces with wax. Not sure if that would help or not.
lick it. no joke.
When you take a shower take the empty box into the room with you and set it on the sink and let the steam rehydrate it.
I have the same problem and was thinking of the steam solution myself - holding the lid over a boiling kettle (with pliers or something) should do the trick.
I find wooden boxes in general tend to tighten an loosen up depending on the ambient temperature. However, when one has gone loose and needs something doing I just rub a light layer of candle wax along the joint between lid and body and this tightens it up nicely. Ive heard people say thats not good for the box but it works fine for mine with no problems. PC boxes are very fragile, I would be extremely cautious about applying steam and pliers to one - try a little wax first.
I have done what Nachman said. It works like a charm and does not hurt the box. A good hot shower in a closed room (keep fan off or windows and doors closed) is all it takes. I’ve found that some of these boxes do not take moist snuffs well. Some kind of eduction must happen, and the moisture of both snuff and snuffbox evaporate together. Anyway, the cure for this like many ailments is a hot shower.
If I put something moist into my PC box, it always loosens, but equalizes after awhile. They are finicky things.
Yeah, one prob with these boxes is that they arent lined! So moist snuff is a no-can-do with these nice looking boxes. I personally find them too small and I dont like the sliding lids. I find that opening and closing the lid especially outdoors, always loose me some snuff! But they do look nice :o) I prefer silver boxes, but Im using a burr wood snuff box from the 18th cent, and it doesnt warp or crack or loose the snuff. The choice of a snuff box is as personal as chosing shorts or a tooth brush. What works for one may not work at all for another.
Buy silver. It costs but lasts forever. Wooden boxes are fine and I still use them now and again but if you are sticking with snuff and have the cash get a good condition silver snuff.
Hmmm, lick my snuff box? I think I’ll pass. I use it for hops snuff, it might taste “slightly” bitter. Steam might work temporarily. I will consider it. I’ve thought about silver but they seem to be huge boxes, I don’t go through snuff very fast. Wouldn’t my snuff get stale?
I have a couple PC boxes and they have held up very well for a couple years now. The paduak box has a lid that is loose in one direction, but a perfect fit in the other. You might try, without forcing, turning the lid over and/or inserting it from the other side. Once you find the best fit, never remove the lid completely.
@ rdunnion Hops snuff? What is this stuff all about?
Bow-String wax.
Or, place in a cigar humidor at 70% for a couple day’s.
@LincolnSnuff, McChrystals Stammheimer Hopfen Schnupf. Delicious, have some in my nose right now!!
I use three PC boxes on a daily base. When a lid works loose, I apply a TINY, TINY, TINY bit of super glue to the side of the lid. Rub it with your finger to spread it evenly and then leave to dry COMPLETELY. The lid will now fit like new. If it’s to tight, rub lightly with a piece of FINE sandpaper. I can guarantee it works!
Mr. Claasens method sounds perfect. I keep plenty of 500 plus grit sandpaper in my billards cue case to sand down my shaft if it gets nicked. (Out of context quote page on that!) If you add too much glue, just wrap a thin cut piece of emery on a small file or popsicle stick and take a little off. If it’s a matter of a couple thousandths of an inch, even a .003 piece of printer paper wrapped on a popsicle stick will remove enough glue to make if fit like a glove. You could alwayse use a girl’s emery board as well, just very lightly. With one of my PC boxes I actually had to add material to it, and machine (mill) it back to fit, but I doubt you would need to, it’s just I have the gear available. I plan on trying a copy of the triple-tech with alum. and a copper, brass, or even steel top so I don’t have the humidity or wear issues. Just not two similar materials together. Perhaps Mr. Collens would consider using two different types of wood for his boxes as when they are similar, they wear differently, if there are two types of wood possibly you would have different results. I find aluminum and some copper “wear-plate” has little actual material degregation to it. Looking at Mr. Collens methods to make the boxes, I’m suprised he hasn’t tried any out of different metals yet. I bet he could make some money using a brass box with a pure copper or aluminum top that wouldn’t wear. If it’s brass or steel vs. a different metal you wouldn’t need to lubricate it at all. Like I said above I personally use some bow string wax, but reading Mr. Claasens idea the next time I’ll try super glue. Big hint here, DONT use gorilla glue or wood glue as it foams up and multiplies in size.
Mr. Claasens? Did you get an upgrade Pieter?
ha ha ha I just started a discussion on this exact topic. I didn’t see it was already here. Have not been on the forum for a while.
thanks Pieter. @Lincolnsnuff What Pieter said, an excellent snuff.
