Newbie to snuff, wasn’t sure if I would like it so went to Akron to pick up some. Got Tops Dry Sweet, I like the snuff but the Top was way too dry and clogged my nose badly. The scent wasn’t too bad though. Went to the only other place in a 40 mile radius that had any (New Philadelphia, OH) and picked up Three Thistles Strong Scotch and Navy Sweet Scotch Dry. The Navy isn’t too bad, definitely better than the Top but it really doesn’t have much of a scent to me. My favorite is the Three Thistles, I like the strength and the scent is delicious, but its still a little bit dry (although I understand its to be expected with American snuff). I’ve fallen in love with snuff though and am looking to make a fairly big online purchase. The problem is I’m not really sure what to buy as I haven’t tried any flavors or types besides American. I’m not too concerned with it being “difficult” for beginners as I think I’ve been using some fairly difficult snuff and still enjoy it. If you snuff experts can give me some suggestions that’d be great although I’m really looking for some sampler or gift packs too so I can sample a few different flavors, types and brands. All I’ve seen so far is the Toque 6 for 5 deal (searching through the forum you guys don’t seem to be too fond of Toque though), a Wilsons 6 gift pack and Bernard gift pack (although a bit expensive if I’m trying to sample a lot). I’m looking to spend around $50-75 including shipping although I might not be able to resist going over that
as an early snuffer, i suggest (if you like menthol) to look at poschl, which are far from the fine/dry americans. toque arent bad, just not for me (except their plains). my first snuffs were poschl/samuel gawith/gawith hoggarth. try to avoid tap boxes of english snuff, they dry out too quickly, go for the 25g tins instead. then if you like it, you already have more that wont dry out, and if you dont, you can trade.
I’m new to snuff also, but I wish I had posted something like this a few months back before my first order. I would say add one of each style and get from different snuff makers. Go to Mr. Snuff and put together an order on your own. Include a toast (F&T HDT, WoS IHT 22, Toque Natural Toast), a South African Snuff if available (Taxi, NTSU, Babaton, etc.), an indian snuff (6 photo) and on and on. I think Toques are great, just a little difficult to take for me. I do think of the “flavored” snuffs I have tried, I like Toques the best. They are so true to their names it’s kind of eerie. The floral scents are very powerful, but I love Whisky & Honey and Bourbon. You could get the 10 for 9 deal with their 10g tins and try a lot. Also try some Samuel Gawith. They come sealed in vaccuum tins. Try the Kendals as they are natural with no flavoring added. Also, be sure to try FUBAR Grunt.
I’ll give you the advice that I usually give in these cases. Get as many different varieties as your budget can afford; don’t worry about the flavors too much just pick what seems interesting to you. To do this the best bet is to get one or two somethings from every snuff maker. The Toque 10 for 9 10g deal is probably better than the 6 for 5 25g deal in terms of sampling a wider selection. I recommend 10g (or approximate) sizes of all snuffs except for Gawith Hoggarth and Samuel Gawith. For those two, spend the extra 30 cents or whatever for the extra 15g, because it is more likely to be fresh. Their 10g boxes are notorious for drying out snuff. By varieties I mean styles. There are quite a few: English Medicated English Floral/perfumed English Herbal Other English scented SP Irish Toast Rappee Kendal Brown (note: Wilsons of Sharrow and Fribourg & Treyer snuffs of this name are not representative of the style) Schmalzler Halb-schmalzler standard German fruity or minty mentholated historical recreations from de Kralingse (Virginia and Latakia types) South African Gwayi such as Taxi Indian Perfumed Indian toast-like snuff such as Dholakia Sparrow or Madras style Indian White Snuff (very difficult for beginners) American Scotch and Sweet Scotch (which you have discovered) There’s plenty more, but that’s off the top of my head. Also there is variety even within the same style from maker to maker. Its easy to get overwhelmed by the variety to be found online and the disparity to what is usually available locally (slim to none) can be dumbfounding in irony. If you do a good job with your first order, it won’t be your last

Its a good start, I’d say. I don’t know anything about the Cool Guarana though. It might be one of those tobacco free ones.
@peterparker…Welcome… I’m snuffing 5 months and still ponder what to order, I know my preferences, but are so many of each style. Some Snuffers stick to a dozen favorites, then some have over 500 snuffs. WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE! Lol… Keep it under lock and key… Just kidding…strange thing with snuff is… You may not like a certain snuff today… In a month you love it… That happened with railroad mills maccoboy, now I can’t put it down. On your list ( and I have easily over 100 snuffs ) I have only tried berwick brown ( must revisit… Didnt like ) Fubar GRUNT … ( Love it… Think of cigars) toque natural toast… Awesome … I have yet to try a 6 photo , the 2-6 photos and 2 others on your list are in shipment to me now from MRSNUFF… Did you start snuffing to quit cigs or what? Hope you stick around … Well written opening thread…thanks…Welcome
They all taste different depending on what you are using them with also. Loving my toast blend with my coffee this morning although had some Best Dark and Rose SP blend for my initial wake-up. Last night with a couple of beers my toast blend was really dull and bland and this morning it’s lively again with my coffee and a little is giving me a lot of nic whereas with the beer I was shoveling it in and seeming to get no nic. In fact since using snuff for a few months I don’t seem to like beer any longer preferring red wine now. When I smoked, beer was great and now that I only use snuff, wine seems much better? Got to put a MrSnuff order together based on these tips inthis thread. Was meaning to do that but went for SWS’s and Abraxas which simplified things a lot but blew the budget for a little while. Of course haven’t even properly tried half of what I have already.

Might have tobacco but I think its primarily guarana which is a caffeine containing berry, I definitely wanted to try an “energy snuff” and that looked pretty good.

Yeah I had an Abraxas Café but its very expensive. Coffee flavor sounds really good though so I might knock a few off to get it.

I think most of us like Toque snuff - I do a lot, Im a fan of naturals and toasts, although I also like the Toque Cheese and Bacon and some others. The Toque 6 for 5 deal on their website (toquesnuff.com) on 25g tins is excellent - Id suggest doing that and selecting (if you like the 3 Thistles American Scotch): Toque Natural Toast Toque Quit Toque Almond Toast Toque Lime Toast and pick a couple others. Id recommend Christmas Pudding and Whisky&Honey. MrSnuff also has a similar deal on Toque Snuff I believe.

The only Toque I ended up getting was Natural Toast, the flavors looked good but I made a few sacrifices so I could get an Abraxas and a snuff box (currently using an altoids tin haha). Next order I’ll be sure to pick up a few more Toques, especially the Almond Toast and Whiskey & Honey sounds good.
… In fact since using snuff for a few months I don’t seem to like beer any longer preferring red wine now. When I smoked beer was great and now that I only use snuff wine seems much better? …
Although I have never been a smoker - I also find that red wine is a better drink than beer when taking snuff. I have also found that my snuff usage goes right down when I have a wee drinking session, it just doesn’t seem to appeal as much when I have alcohol to hand. I try only to drink once a week, but that is just me trying to avoid getting a “beer belly” or “wine belly” in my case.
I’m totally the opposite, when I drink beer I like snuff even more and it seems to hit me much harder. I generally don’t like drinking too much wine, makes me loopy even after just two or three glasses.
