I love Best SP and it’s part of my usual rotation but when my nose is a little off I can’t take it without a big throat hit. I’ve revisited Viking Blond the past few days just for a change (I like Dark and Brown but find them a bit full-on) and one of the reasons I like the Blond is it’s such a forgiving snuff, and easy to take. It got me thinking, is there a ‘fluffy’ medium style of snuff made by anothe that carries the distinct WoS SP type aromas, but that isn’t strictly an SP? I hope I’m making sense.
Jaxons SP Premium is very easy to take
I like SG SP Scotch. It has a bit of a different scent than the usual bergamot-forward SP’s. More “rich” and less of the citrus zing I suppose. It is quite fluffy like Viking Blond (which I believe is just SG SP No. 1 High Mill relabeled) when fresh. It’s been awhile but if I recall correctly J&H Wilson’s SP No. 1 is a bit easier to take than Best SP with more of the traditional SP aroma.

JHW No 1 seems to have changed since coming back to the UK. I have only tried one of the newer tins, but I ended up throwing it as I choked every pinch. Very fine and dusty

Thanks for the tip. The last time I had some I went through it in record time which I wouldn’t do if it was a dusty mess.
I agree with crullers, SG SP Scotch is a good one, it lives permanently in one of my snuff boxes
Interesting stuff, thank you guys. I’ll investigate those. I actually have a little tin of J and H Wilsons SP No.1 but I don t know how old it is. I’ve just tried some and whilst it was pretty dry and fine I fancy yes, a bit easier to take than Best SP but the aromas weren’t quite as nice.
If it’s the blue plastic tin with metal lid, it’s from when production was in South Africa. The grind was “grittier” than other SP’s and to be honest, it’s that snuff that started off my snuffing journey. If they had retained that grind, the snuff would probably be in my top 10. Since moving production back to the UK the tin’s have switched to the Wos or McC style small tin, and the grind has lost it’s texture. Now it’s just ground into oblivion, which may be fine for those who like ultra fine snuffs, but for me it just bypasses the nose and goes straight to the throat for a full on purple faced coughing session.
It’s the metal one. I find it a step or two easier to take than WoS Best SP however.
You could try wos best dark. It’s a dark, moist snuff with a good natural citrus zest flavour.
WoS Brunswick
@Thunderbird I highly recommend Samuel Gawith No1 High Mill. Viking Dark and this snuff so far have been the only snuffs I can take without any nasal issues. Samuel Gawith No1 High Mill has a soft almost damp flour scented with bergamot and a few other notes I can’t place. I find it to be wonderful. :x
Thanks for the additional recommendations.
i though the samuel gawith base tobacco smell over powered the the smell of the bergamont i could hardly detect it now tom buck on the other hand is epic. i hears queesn extra strong is rebranded tom buck
Try the Covent Mature crumbled … a nice easy to take matured SP, or if you fancy a twist on an SP the Jocks Choice, again fluffy easy to take but flavored with additional neroli oil (orange) . Very nice… they deliver in the UK (http://www.davy.co.uk/segar-and-snuff-parlour.php)
I’ll be in London soon so will check them out. I like the orangeyness of St Casura so that bodes well.

I’m going to test that theory out as I’ve heard the same rumour myself but I can’t imagine WoS doing that. I’m a regular Tom Buck snuffer so I’ll get some queens and try it out. I’m a fan of the SP and order mine straight from WoS but it depends where you guys live. Tom Buck is my main atm as I find it the most satisfying, I’ve also got on order Best Dark SP 100 Gold Label Princes

'Tis true. A member here (can’t remember who) phoned Wilson’s, and t was confirmed by a lady who works there. It’s for historical reasons, which I would imagine are that they used to make one or t’other under contract for someone and carried on the name after the contract ended, in the same was as SG’s Black Rappee and London Brown are the same thing with a different name.
