Morning Chaps, Wondering if any one can help me find this - When I was at Smith and Sons in London, they had some great little flip top snuff boxes. I didnt see how much they were and I dont think I will be going back to London for a while so does any body know where I can find this kind of snuff box on the internet? I have looked all over and the only ones I can find are antique ones, which I dont really want. The ones in Smith and Sons didnt look antique to me (though when it comes to that sort of thing they I have a very untrained eye!). I have seen Rajeks have some plastic ones, but I would like at least one wooden one. I prefer this kind of box to the slide open ones. If any one can point me in the right direction please let me know. Cheers, David.
CHECK OUT THIS SITE flip open snuff boxes. I like the steam train! Otherwise check on ebay, they usually have a lot of them.
I have a couple of the flip open boxes and this is my favorite one. I saw it and it fit me so well I just had to have it. I keep this one full of Levi Garrett.
Hey Troutstroker, thats exactly the kind of thing I want. Yours is really nice, I like the detail on the sides of the box, I will keep looking for one similar to this. Do you find with an old snuff box that they seal ok and keep the snuff fresh? Thanks.
Rajeks has a few different snuff boxes. http://www.rajek.de/shop2/index.php/cat/c43\_Snuff-Accessories.html
I have checked Rajek’s boxes out - nice but, I really want something like Troutstrokers after seeing the pics he put up today!
I just couldn’t take it any more. I wanted a really nice snuff box and this thread inspired me. I just now ordered the nice one that Rajek’s offers. Set me back about $175.00 http://www.rajek.de/shop2/product\_info.php/info/p3236\_Sillems-Snuffbox-made-of-pure-Sterling-with-Saphire---Doser.html
Awesome snuffbox Troutstroker, I hope to one day get my hands on something similar. Actually from the link you provided I like the one with the clover very much. I’ve spent an awful lot of money on new snuffs though this month so hopefully down road. Satyr, It looks very nice and I have eyed it myself in the past. I wonder how it is filled? As it seems to me the only opening I can see is the doser. Sure looks like a nice gift to yourself. Please let us know how you like it once it arrives. Did you order any snuffs also?
Thats great Satyr, its out of my budget but looks very nice. It will be one of those items that looks like it will develop all sorts of nice character over its (no doubt long) life span.
Poo-Diddy: The description on the site says it can be used in two ways. Either with the doser (which is described as having a gasket) or as a classic English snuff box. As far as snuff, I figured I may as well. I ordered 2 of each of the Poschl Replay and one 25g tube of each of the F&T Morocco and Bordeaux. I haven’t yet tried F&T’s line of products, so I really can’t wait to recieve this order Mopey: Yeah, this may be one to have engraved. It’s almost out of my budget as well. But work isn’t as slow as I thought it was going to be this month. I won’t be splurging for a while now. I think I’m done ordering snuff for a while too.
Satyr, from your postings I believe you are a fan of Ozona cherry and Silverstone Orange. With that in mind I think you are going to be very happy with your Replay purchases. Like I described them, they are souped up versions of both. Naver had Morroco, I have Bordeuax and will have to give it a sniff to remember the flavor excactly, but I know it is a dark course floral snuff. Having 2 ways to use that box sounds awesome. I look forward to hearing about it once it arrives.
Satyr - F&T Bordeux is one of my very favourites. You will enjoy, maybe not on the first sniff, but certainly after few. Its not an ‘all the time’ snuff for me, definitely an evening snuff (like right now!). Its got a complex character like a good wine. Its my birthday soon, and I just got a promotion (though given that I had to bring work home this weekend thats not necessarily a good thing!), so maybe I will splurge too… Oh and about you being done ordering snuffs for a while… who are you kidding!?
Satyr, that is very nice snuff box. I think the hinge rotates and then you can open like a tin. You’ll want to make sure though that if you have it in your pocket you don’t have anything like keys or loose change as it will scratch the surface. Mopey, all my flip top boxes are old & all of them still seal very tight. The one pictured is from the early 1900’s. The inlay is sterling silver. I have another one made of oak from the around 1880, it just as tight as if it had just been made. You can see one of my smallest maple ones on this link from a previous post Toque refill in a snuff box And like I mentioned, EBAY is a great place to look for them along with that above link. You have to look under both snuffbox & snuff box. Also check local antique shops, pawn shops, flea markets, outdoor market trade fairs like what the show ‘bargain hunt’ goes to.
Troutstroker - yes I have already started earmarking a few items on ebay. Nothing has come up yet though that looks as nice as the one in your picture. Would you mind me asking how much I should be expecting to pay for something like that?
Well I paid $65 USD for mine which was real cheap in my opinion, I think I got a real good deal. Its mahogany with silver & has age to it with a tight lid & no chips. But you know I would have paid $200. When you see something that you really really like that calls out to you and it fits your style perfectly, the price doesn’t really matter. So expect to pay whatever it takes when you find one that calls out to you!! Chances are you won’t find another like it for a while. I forgot this place has them as well Wood Snuff Boxes I will keep my eye open for you, let us know if you find one. Are you looking for just wood ones like I have or solid silver style as well?
Mopey, with ebay you want to look a few times a day. Always check under the newly listed.
Troutstroker - I would like a wooden bow, with some silver embellishment like the one you have. Actually the ‘loom’ box looks really good. Thanks for the link.
