Long Term (Tobaccacalypse) Schmalzer Storage

Greetings all, I want to store up an “apocalypse” stash of my favorite snuffs. I love Bernard Brasil Schmalzer, but I’ve researched storage topics on this forum and see a lot of people have differing opinions on how long it can be stored. I purchased a small number of Bernard tap boxes from MrSnuff. These are the newer batch using (I believe) mineral oil instead of animal fat. They are sealed box and all, as many as will fit, in new screw top glass jars, and stored in a cool dark closet. Am I just setting myself up for failure, or is this the best route to take?

Oils turn also. Long term storage not for immediate use I say use a food storage vacuum system. For your regular storage if you only use them periodically.small zip lock baggie and air tight glass jar. Some have menthol keep those in a separate jar to avoid cross contamination. For every day use  a empty cigar box ( I get them at the B&M for $2) or humidor. Never in your car.

You do what you feel best. It is your investment.

It is sad that schmalzlers apparently don’t age gracefully, but twice as bright half as long and all that.

Maybe research how people store oil for extended periods then use that technique. If it exists, only thing off the top of my head is hydrogenation which wouldn’t apply. Intuitively, air tight container where you have added an oxygen absorber and placed in freezer, but I don’t know.

Freezing maybe? Keeps snus alive at least

What about using those oxygen absorber packets? I hear they’re superior to traditional vacuum sealing methods. If used in a sealed mason jar, would that perhaps put the schmaltzer in stasis for a few years or so?? To be clear, I’m NOT referring to silica gel packets, those would dry out the snuff, I’m talking about the food safe iron oxide oxygen scavenging packets that remove all oxygen out of the air and leave nitrogen behind. @snuffsahoy, I also noticed these oxygen absorbers are used by manufacturers to store oil indefinitely.

If its specifically long term “snuffmageddon” storage, would it be more prudent to consider a non-oiled black rappee, which is likely to store significantly longer, and oil it up as and when needed? Even if the snuff supply ceases, the mineral oil (or substitute) is unlikely to be unobtainable. This rappee could be stored indefinitely, and a rotation system put in place for usage “genuine” schalmzers that’s in keeping with standard shelf life. The tobacco could be the supply problem, but the oils are the storage problem. Seems sensible to me to separate them Just a thought :-??

@50ft_trad I like that idea, but is there an un-oiled version of Bernard Brasil?

Honestly, I wouldn’t know. Might be worth checking through the Molens catalogue if you haven’t already

^^^What he said. It’s a wonderful schmalzler and assuming the tobaccopocalypse isn’t accompanied by a fatapocolypse, there you go.

I love sternecker! And I looks like MrSnuff has Ungefettet. Gonna stock up! Thanks @basement_shaman

Veering off on a slight tangent, are the oiled Indian snuffs also limited in their lifespan, and what are the signs of deterioration.

@50ft_trad Anything with fat added can “go bad.” A rancid smell will be the giveaway. I’m strange in that I sort of enjoy rancid schmalzlers. If the Nepalese can use rancid yak butter in their tea, I see no danger of rancid oil in the nose.

It’s hard for me not to equate the pungent scent of a few Indian snuffs with something that’s gone rancid, though I enjoy all of them in the nose. That’s obviously much different than enjoying a rancid schmalzler, as Magic Moments by any other scent gets tossed out here.

I’ve added oxygen absorbers to my jars of schmalzer tap boxes, and to my bulk Sternecker Echt Fresco. I’ll also procure some un moistened Fresco as well. Time will tell how well this works.

@organizedmadman I had the idea of decanting all my schmalzler tapboxes into vacuum sealed jars and calling it good. Three to six tapboxes of each favorite decanted in that way and placed in the basement is I think as good as it can possibly get for “long” term storage. I figure whatever I’ll use in a year or less, I’ll just keep ziplocked in their original tapboxes, though given the composition of schmalzlers as we’ve been made to understand, I will date the long term storage jars and begin using them around two years later. If no Tobaccolypse has occurred at that point, rinse and repeat. Well see how it goes.
