I’m new to snuffing, started 6 weeks ago apart from trying Top Mill a few times as a teenager 30y ago. So far tried:- Samuel Gawith Otterhound - liked it initially then decided too perfumed. Wilsons Ice Liquorice & Gawith Hoggarth Camphor & Menthol - liked both initially then descided they had too much menthol, untill I got a cold and liked them againe. Samuel Gawith Irish D Light - love it!!! but find it very fine. Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Brown - Did not like my first try, then loved it, especially the citrus smell. Recently the citrus smell has gone, and then I get a peculiar unpleasant smell which persists. The last time I tried it I got very strong nasal burn and had to blow it out straight away. It’s been in its plastic sealable container since, but has not been stored in the fridge. Has it dried out? Is there a way to make it smell nice again? Liked it so much initially that I thought I’d try a differant manufacturer of Kendal Brown. Im waiting for a new delivery:- 2 Tartan Snuff Handkerchiefs Wilsons Grande Cairo (Red Rapee) Snuff Gawith Hoggarth Eucalyptus Snuff Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original Snuff Samuel Gawith Black Rappee Snuff
My SG Kendal Brown never smelled nice. I never got the citrus scent some other people write about. I just get deep, dark tobacco with a pronounced smell of old tires and a hefty nose burn. It’s dry and granular, and I rehydrated mine by spraying water on it after decanting it, but it’s still rough and has a very hard hitting, unique scent. I absolutely love it, but I started a thread awhile back called “Offensive Scents = Great Snuffs.” The smell of Kendal Brown reminds me of driving into Baltimore or Philadelphia during the late 60s when the fires of industry were burning brightly and “malodorously.” Except I loved that odor of rubber factories and oil refineries, which I get from SG Kendal Brown more than any other snuff. The WoS and F&T Kendal Browns are much more perfumed. I’ve never tried the GH because as soon as I tried the SG I fell in love and ordered a 250 gram drum. There are a lot of great citrus based snuffs, but in my opinion Kendal Brown isn’t among them, nor should it be.
Tried dripping a few drops of water into the openong of the Gawith Hoggarth container last night. Today its returned to its former nice smell with modderate nasal burn, although it is a bit lumpy!!, probably better to spray a mist of water rather than drip drops onto the snuff.
Let me know if anyone ever finds a snuff that smells like you’re stuck in traffic behind a city bus…you know, that “diesel fumes on a cold Winter morning” smell.
@Z_2K Instead of rehydrating SG Kendal Brown with water you could try diesel. Then a little menthol of your choice. That should smell just like a cold bus fart. lol
I too have never gotten a citrus smell from GH’s Kendall Brown, though if memory serves me lime is supposed to be one of the flavouring agents. I do appreciate the burn, but I have to blow it out after five minutes; the nose running is profound.
“diesel fumes on a cold Winter morning” smell." As an former bus driver I know that smell all too well!
There was this one time I ran over a tire while driving a semi and it ripped the splitter line for the fuel between the two tanks. Well I spent a few hours trying to put it back together and ended up soaked in diesel head to toe. I kind of liked it and it didn’t burn or anything like that. So I think I would be happy to snuff a blend with a couple drops of diesel in it. I’m going to look it up and see how bad this is going to hurt me. hahahahahahhaaa.
I worked on semi’s in a truck stop when I was younger, so the smell of diesel and old rubber brings back fond memories. There’s nothing like breaking down an old split-rim with a flat on a July afternoon to get the blood flowing. Which is why I love SG Kendall Brown. Likewise with Little Feat’s “Truck Stop Girl” and “Willin’”
“Did not like my first try, then loved it, especially the citrus smell. Recently the citrus smell has gone, and then I get a peculiar unpleasant smell which persists.” Did you check the sole of your boot?
No that smell is not peculiar at all, Im well used to it, living with 2 Rotweillers and whipping-in to a pack of beagles
@ bigblue1 I like snuff, “But if you give me weed, whites and wine, and you show me a sign…”
Fribourg & Treyer Kendal Brown has always given me a splitting headache. Far too perfumed for me. I’ve come back to this one and it’s always the same result. If you haven’t tried Toque Berwick Brown, please do. I prefer it over any other vendor’s “brown” snuff.
I agree with kjoerup. I just received a tin of B.B.: this is the about the best snuff I’ve had yet. It seems a finer grind than I remember S.Gawith’s Kendal as having (I’ll have to order some more of that for research!) and I can take with ease and pleasure all day long. I wish Roderick had an “About Us” link on his web site, I’d like to know more about this fellow, and just how he got to be so good at snuff-making. Some kind of Faustian bargain maybe…? Right after I posted this, I read the “Toque pictures” thread: Roderick people want to know! But not at the expense of your snuff making time.
The Berwick Brown is one of Roderick’s better products with out a doubt in that it actually has a distinctive grind and scent. The coarse, dryer nature of the SG Kendal Brown along with it’s full on clean tobacco scent is exactly what prompts me to have a preference to it over the Toque. I do feel somewhat out of synch though as I don’t get exhaust fumes from it (-;
I really like F&T Kendall Brown. It reminds me of my dad who always splashed himself with bottles of Old Spice.
F&T and Wilsons don’t really seem like proper Kendal Browns to me. From SG I’ve only had KB Plain so far. I was actually very impressed with Smith’s Kendal Brown. I know its hard to get, but it really struck a note with me. Someday I’ll get try the rest of the SGs. Until then Smith is Brown King. Toque’s Berwick Brown, is excellent, I agree. I’m not sure its in the same class though.
@LHB “Then I’ll be willin…to be movin”
I like SG kendal brown over the GH, but ive now been seduced away by the Torque flavoured toasts.
I’ve got another shipment inc SG Kendal Brown Special This one is nice and moist despite being in a tap box. I’m still not getting the orange flavour. This one smells like a milder version of Black Rappee, and is nice. I’ve had 2 instalments of SG KB so I’m not sure how it is supposed to taste (does your nose taste snuff or Smell it?). Is KB supposed to smell similar to Black Rappee or could I have got a different snuff such as London Brown packaged as KB Special? Any experts out there to comment?
