Just tried straight Rustica for the first time

Bought the 50 gram bag from Toque.  Okay, this stuff is not nearly as dangerous or painful as I was led to believe - I think a lot of that is marketing hype.  It has a really nice kick, and has to be taken carefully as with any other fine dry snuff, but I’m not experiencing hallucinations or anything.  It’s just a really strong snuff - why is fine by me.  The aroma is, hmmm . . . interesting.  Very earthy, but not at all unpleasant, with a faint hint of dried fruit.  It’s great on its own, but I can see it also being a really nice blender for tamer snuffs.

I think something unique to snuff keeps anything from being too strong. Maybe because how quickly the body moves it down to stomach acid or expels it. I don’t know, but too much strong tobacco in the lip and I’ll get sick, but I can use the same blend in the nose and it’s never too strong-not weak just not overpowering.

I believe it is just a matter of where your nicotine level is at. Some people are nicotine sensitive with a low threshold and the smallest amount of nicotine will make their head spin. I am not one of those people but I understand the warning attached to Rustica.

I find it bitter and had used some los snus that contained a high amount of rustica  I will use it but i mix it with a normal tobacco los snus because the taste has long staying power. Rustica is an acquired taste like anything else; I think it is better as a mixer that just straight. I have yet tried to flavor my straight rustica but it on the list for this mad scientist mixing lab work. Just have to find a flavor that will meld well. don’t want to end up with a frankensnuff I can’t enjoy.

I received a 50g bag a couple weeks ago. I had a toot as I put it in a jar, then left it alone. I just put some in a tin and tried it again. It has a curious but pleasant aroma. I sent one sniff behind my right eyeball, which was painful, but otherwise it is not harsh, as I expected. Six appleseed sized pinches over almost 15 minutes has left the stimulation of strong snuff, but nothing unusual so far. I’ll keep the tin handy. For a fine snuff, the nicotine seems to last longer than one might expect. That could lead to overdoing it, so I’m being careful. I loaded my nose again and I’ll give it a break for a bit.

WHERE DID ALL THESE SPIDERS COME FROM!? Just kidding; I’m still fine.

I’ve only really used it as an “enhancer”, so I can’t comment accurately on the effects of using it on it’s own. I have tried a small pinch on it’s own, back when I first got it. As I recall, the scent wasn’t anything wonderful, so I never bothered using it as an individual snuff in it’s own right

I wasn’t overly impressed with that first sniff. I remember thinking it’s similar to the Whites. It really isn’t, though. Stepping outdoors brings organic, floral notes. The aroma lasts in the nose–good thing I like it! I can see using to boost some snuffs (really why I bought it), though it is nice straight and has a flavor that could complement that of some snuffs, too. The strength of it crept up on me. I could have made myself sick had I not been careful. It’s probably not one to snuff carelessly while focused on another task.

My first thought was hops when I tried it. I agree that is is not as strong as it is made out to be. That being said, it has a cumulative effect. After 6 hours of USA W&H I was feeling lethargic. It’s been a week since then and I’ve adapted quite well. Just a warning if you were considering taking it all day.

I don’t use it too frequently, these days. If I did I’d end up couch-locked. No, if I’m going to do it I save it until before bedtime then give it some hammer. End up feeling like a space-brain and have the most freaky dreams. Great when in the mood, a pain when not.

It does offer quite a bit of relaxation taken over a couple hours. I’m putting it away again until bedtime.

Last night, I took a good amount of Toque Rustica with some Lundy Foot. I remember zero dreams, though I stayed asleep for almost four straight hours–a long stretch for me. I’ll repeat the experience.

I take a big pinch of the USA W&H in each each nostril before bed. I sleep like a rock.

A bowl o’ twist is my usual nightcap. I like a tiny pinch of something as I lie down, but I haven’t found a snuff without bothersome drip issues when taken in sufficient quantity before I become horizontal. I think I’ll try adding more Rustica to what’s already in the USA WH. I have taken Toque W&H at before sleep and awoken hours later to that sweet scent. That is pleasant. I’ll enjoy the rustica again this evening. Then I think a 1:1 mix of Toque W&H:Toque Rustica or a 2:1 mix of Toque USA W&H:Toque Rustica will be that last sniff. Sorry to hog your thread, @MarkM. We had similar experiences, overall, I think. Actually you inspired me to break out and get into the rustica.

I didn’t sleep well last night, though I had a long, very vivid nightmare at one point. Interesting, if not particularly fun.

@TerrapinFlyer - I tend to have extremely vivid, oftentimes downright bizarre, dreams if I decide to go to sleep with a snus in my lip.  I guess nicotine has this tendency - in fact, on the labeling for nicotine patches, it explicitly states that if wearing the patch 24 hours results in “disturbed dreams”, you should take it off before you go to bed and apply a new one after waking up.  I think it has to do with the heightened alertness afforded by nicotine combined with the brain’s natural creativity during the sleep state.

@MarkM, yeah, I have had the experience with snus and, long ago, the patch. I like your theory. A strong pipe will put me out without dreams. I make every effort to remove my snus, now, though. I woke up a couple weeks ago with a bergamot mudslide from a Grov portion. The “teabag” was gone, swallowed, I assume. I’m a pretty avid tooth grinder in my sleep, though.

I don’t find it too strong, and the aroma is nice, but I still have 80% of the 50g bag I got a few years ago. It isn’t one I like daily. I grew my own Rustica last year and results were mixed…
