I was in the mood to try something exotic so I just bought the Super Himalaya Golden from Nicotine Rush. I was curious what to expect has anyone tried this one.? I’ll review it when it arrives.
I opened my can the other day. In the tin it smells rather pungent, very high ammonia smell. It must be fresh. The can itself is very nice. The plastic is very durable and clean, certainly an upgrade from the other tin I have of their Himalaya, which was very recycled looking.
If you are in the mood for exotic, this will definitely satisfy that desire. It is very good and smells of incense.
5 Photo Himalaya Super is a fantastic perfumed snuff by any standard, in my opinion. Great nicotine hit also. The “Special” is at least as good, maybe a little better, depending on how you feel about a little menthol. It’s darker, moister and a slight bit coarser, but its not for sale yet. I’ve got some samples of it that I’m hoarding until it becomes available.
@LHB: Do you speak of “Super Himalayan” or the “Super Himalayan Golden”?
@cstokes : One and the same. 5 Photo Himalaya and ‘Special’ are now in stock. Tom
Bak Door Just for curiousity why in such big Tins. 50gms is a lot of snuff
I doubt that Tom has much control over what size he gets. That may be the only size it’s available in.
Only size they wanted to sell me.
They pack a lot of snuff in there, the snuff is almost hard in the can.
What exactly is the difference between the Himalaya and the Super Himalaya Golden, aside from the fact that one is described as black and the other as golden colored? Are these two distinctly different snuffs or are they similar in flavor? (I’ll find out soon enough, but would still like to know!)
@# bakdoor You are killing me, the regular Himalayan was the one I actually wanted to try. I heard it was the most popular snuff in India. Just my luck you put it in days after I buy the Super Himalaya Golden. LOL
I probably shouldn’t have, as I have really become a lightweight in my snuff use, but I went on and bought these, as I am a sucker for Indian snuffs, and I just wanted them.
I love the Super Himalaya Golden! Finely ground, moist, a good nic hit. Seems like a touch of menthol in there, but it quickly gives way to the exotic smell of mysterious Indian incenses. As with the Raja #5, I had to empty much of the container into a used snus can; the snuff is absolutely packed into the container. Now with about a third of it empty, I should be able to pinch directly from the container, which i can’t do w/ the Raja, as that container is too small (though if you use a snuff spoon you could probably use that). Wonderful stuff.
Er, so what is the difference between the Himalaya and the Super Himalaya Gold? … anyone??
One has Gold in it.
… which I suppose renders it ‘super’. Indeed. I was asking only because I ordered both the Himalaya and the Super Himalaya Gold, then wondered if I had just ordered two very similar snuffs. I’ll find out in a few days how different or similar they are!
I think the Gold is a reference to it’s color. Himalaya is a darker snuff, with a patchouli scent. The gold seems to have more scents in it.
Thanks. That is what I was wondering.
I was going to start a thread dedicated to trying to figure out the mysteries of 5 Photo nomenclature, but I see it’s already going. I know I have the Super (which is the golden) and I think I have the Special in smash boxes (which is darker). But then there’s the Raj in the small container, and then what appears to be “Regular” which is the one advertised as “the most popular snuff in India” and which I don’t think I’ve ever tried. Might as well just get 3 of each of them and sort it out later. The two I have are so fantastic that when revisiting F&T Morlaix a little while ago, it seemed very old fashioned and kind of boring. I also have to admit a weakness for Indian snuffs. Edit: Here’s the link to their website. I definitely have the Himalaya and the Super (Golden). http://www.snuffindia.com/
Hey, LHB, I saw your review in which you wrote that Himalaya “smells like the cover of My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless looks.” No way could I possibly resist buying 50g of the stuff after reading THAT!
@kjoerup I saw your question above about the Super and the Himalaya. I’m about to place my order and I’m trying to figure out what I’ve already got. It seems I have both the Golden and the Himalaya, whereas I thought I had the Super and the Special. The Super Golden is lighter, drier and with hardly any menthol. The Himalaya is considerably darker and coarser with more of a cooling sensation, but nothing like a real mentholated snuff. I think you’ll be glad you got both of them. Now, I’m going to order both the Himalaya and the Super, which look pretty close, but I do love these snuffs so much I’m actually afraid to use them. Tantric Porno by Bardo Pond may be more like it; but there’s something reddish/pink about the smell of this snuff that reminds me of old shoegaze bliss outs more than tie dye and head shops. Maybe the cover of “Tremolo” as well?
Super Himalaya IS Super Golden. They are one and the same. I guess I created some confusion when naming the ‘Super’ on the site. It’s fixed.
Now he’s gotta carry the 6 Photo snuffs: http://www.sixphotosnuff.com/cgi-bin/getPage.pl?id=1502&lang=en I’d buy.
Me too. Every one of them! I want the sizes that the girl is holding. Little girls to advertise snuff is hilarious.
I ordered the Super and the Raja and I love both of them! Darn it now I have to order the other two! I have been using the Super Himalaya all day and it is wonderful. Seems to do very well in the nicotine department as well. The Raja is also wonderful although I only snuff that one at home, it is so black I get it all over myself when out in public.
@ bakdoor: Looking at 5 Photo’s website, I see a “Sagar.” Will you be stocking that one as well?
Well I just received my Super Himalaya Golden and it doesn’t dissapoint. It smells of exotic India. It’s like entering a incense bizarre. There is a slight amount of Menthol which makes it refreshing but the Menthol doesn’t overpower the senses. The incense smell lasted for at least two hours. Surprisingly (and this may change) this incense didn’t give me a headache like cheaper incenses do. I haven’t tried the other 5 Photos but have a feeling that I will. One thing I noticed as mentioned above they seem to pack it tightly into the can. I used a small screwdriver to scrape it up a little to take my pinch. I’m thinking about mixing this one with Toque Quit to add a little spice to my Toque.
@Xander: I ordered that along with the rest of them. Was told it would delay my order and that I had better just get the Himalayas, Special, and Raja. I didn’t want to insist, as this was my first order from them. @tom502: I’ve contacted them on a number of occasions to no avail. Will keep trying, but many of these companies are small and don’t or wont ship internationally.
I am confused regarding my orders now. I had ordered the Raja5 and the Super Himalaya Golden both of which I like. Yesterday I ordered the other two, or at least I think I did. My invoice from yesterday says 5 Photo ‘Special’ 50g and 5 Photo Himalaya. So I am hoping I did this right and am getting all 4 snuffs. I did send you a email regarding this Tom. I guess the reason I am somewhat confused is the snuff I have that I think is the Golden is not really golden to me, it is brown. Golden seems like it should be more yellowish. I decanted mine already and no longer have the little tin it came in. The label I made for the decanter says Super Himalaya on it, which I took straight off the tin. There was no Golden in the name. Whatever I have is good snuff, I just do not need another tin of that one yet.
It seems like you have it right. You ordered the Raja, and the Super. Then the Special, and the Himalaya. There are alot of Indian snuffs that interest me. Arora http://www.aroraproduct.com/snufftobacco.html This company: http://www.snuffwork.com/varieties.htm More: http://www.vartak-snuff.com/scented-snuff.htm This: http://www.snuffking.com/brands.htm UMA: http://www.umasnuff.com/ bakdoor Tom, the UMA site says “Exporting Snuff Worldwide”. I’m sure there is more.
Yes, most of them say that. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way. What they say, and what they’ll actually do…
To clear up a little bit more. The 5Photo Super Himalaya come in a large, somewhat cylindrical container with a blue and gold label, and the snuff is brownish-gold, very clean, with just a touch of menthol. The 5Photo Himalaya comes in a rectangular container with a similar goldish blue label, but is darker, moister, somewhat more mentholated, with a more complex, and long lived scent. The 5Photo Special (it doesn’t have the word “Himalaya” in the name), comes in a rectangular container with a dark red and blue label, and is the darkest of the three that come in the 50g. size. The Raj is more of a straight tobacco and comes in odd little 10g. tins.
On a different tangent. Roderick you’ll be glad to hear. I mixed the Super Himalaya 50% with Toque quit and came up with a absolutely delightful concoction. The Quit hits you with a Sting and than the Super Himalaya soothes the nose.
I just ordered some too, it sounds very good, thanks for the reviews.
I now have all four of these and I like them all. I have not been able to put them down and my other snuffs are all feeling a little unloved at the moment.
I also have several containers of all of the 5Photo varieties and love each of them, but the biggest surprise to me was the Raja. It makes the heaviest Schmalzer I’ve tried (Brasil Doppelt Fermient) seem rather light in comparison, and has an overwhelming and unique scent of fresh Concord Grapes, dates and figs.
I haven’t opened my Raja yet.
