So I just got 10 tins of Toque in the mail, I have no idea which I should try first, but ive been looking at all of them and smelling the different aromas. I noticed that most of them are very fine as opposed to the Poschl that I am used to, they also seemed very light in color and ive been afraid that they might be too dry, are most english snuffs like this or is it a characteristic of toque? Is it how the snuff is supposed to be? Just did a pinch of pomegranite, very warm in the nose, seems a bit made it to my throat though XD.
Yeah everything you just described is normal for toque.
Edit: That kind of sounded bad after I read it a couple times. I definitely didn’t mean that in a bad way. Toque makes a great product and I’m glad I got a chance to grab some of the Thuoc luo tobacco they had on sale a couple months ago. It makes some of my favorite snuffs last A LOT longer and adds to the nicotine level as well.
Vito,
Don’t forget if you don’t like the fresh ammonia aroma let them air a little. Berwick Brown is our heavy coarse snuff (a style we will be introducing more in 2012) and better suited to those used to German snuff. Probably best to stay away from the toasts for a while.
Ah, but I LOVE your Natural Toast and your Lime Toast!!!
Love toque. My favorite snuff. Especially the apricot!! Can’t get enough!
For me its the Pomegranate. I can’t get enough. I must know, @Toque is it pure pomegranate essence in this or is ther some lemon or other citrus which gives it such zing?
Xander, You should know better. Next you’ll be asking me for the recipe!
You need to find the right way to pinch and snuff it, then the Toque snuffs are perfect… As i started with Toque i, always coughed…(maybe its just my big nose ) but meanwhile i can easily handle it.
I need a mini shovel for the champagne snuff. I can’t just take one pinch of this stuff. OMG it’s so good!!
With any luck I’ll be able to smell them properly now, just getting over a head cold that started the day before my order arrived. They all seem good, but I know I’m not getting the best of them at the moment.
Ahh, im still getting it in the throat. seems like pinching it between your fingers to make a small compressed piece of snuff works the best right now. pomegranite is my favorite… no vanilla… absinthe perhaps!
Yeah Toque’s medium grind is a bit finer than other manufacturers. However, I started with Toque. Back when Toque had free shipping, so most people started by ordering a few tins from them. I don’t feel like their non-toast snuffs are drier than other brands though. What might be throwing you is Poschl uses different stuff than Toque to add moisture. I’m a little biased because I don’t like Poschl, but I believe Toque snuffs are water-based whereas Poschl uses waxes/oil.
Hey what is the proper way to air out toque in the tin? I just ordered a 6 for 5 deal. Champange, Peach, Toast Marmalade, W&H,Spanish Gem, and SP Extra.
I personally would not recommend airing them out at all. The ammonia will be gone soon enough. If you can’t stand it then you should spoon some out into another container with some air in it to let it breathe a little.
@Toque, I’d ask for an apprenticeship if I lived closer!
@Juxtaposer All right I will leave them be. I have read on here a few times about people airing out some of their toque snuff but I actually never did that with the Vanilla, quit, or blueberry I have had. I am assuming really fresh snuff so I just thought maybe I should.
Sly,
Airing is a matter of taste. I love the freshness, particularly on our naturals. I think they smell of wet dog and damp straw rather like a Loire Chenin Blanc but, others think they smell of cats urine and have to air them.
Mr Toque wait a second what do you have cats and dogs doing near your snuffs? I guess I’am asking how did the dogs get wet???
I coughed terribly with Toque as a beginner. Few months later I was fine.
I’ve only had a problem taking either Lime Toast or SP Extra the others have been quite easy to take. I have found though, not quite “airing out”, but after having the tin opened (and obviously closed back up) for a day or two makes it a lot better. For example, I tried Coke and got nothing but tobacco/ammonia? smell/taste (not sure what ammonia smells like any more so I’m not sure if that’s what I got), tried it a day or two later and it was a whole lot better.
The Ammonia scent is good! you know it is fresh. Natural gases escaping the fermenting tobacco ;if it didn’t release gas it was some where down the line pasteurized.
I’m not quite understanding this ammonia thing, so I looked it up and it says it is toxic, caustic, and dangerous to the environment, so now I am even more confused.
It’s just a by product of the snuff making process. It means you got some particularly fresh snuff. If you’re concerned about it, let the tin air out for maybe 30 minutes and it’ll disappear. Otherwise, just pinch from it and don’t worry about it, there’s not a very significant concentration of it in your snuff and it’ll resolve itself within a day or two of pinching anyway.
@Vito445 When I looked into the “ammonia thing” for the first time I ran into information regarding smelling salts and was thoroughly encouraged.
Vito it’s a very small amount of Ammonia which you also have a very small amount of ammonia in your body for the same reason (it’s a by product of breaking down certain organic materials protiens specficily in your body) sure it’s toxic including the amount already in you, though the liver is very good at sending that stuff over to the kidneys in a form that’s easier to expel. with ammonia it’s really a threshold thing and even though it smells strongly in snuff it’s not enough to do anything serious. Possibly if you’ve got respiratory problems and hence sensitive lungs then the amount of ammonia in snuff could damage or irritate your lungs most likely irritate. My point you’re expoused to more ammonia by eating and digesting foods (specificly protiens). However I still find it gross and don’t like ammonia in my snuff and air that stuff out. Though I will go on the record of thinking ntsu may add additional ammonia so what I’ve said may or may not apply to that one.
It doesnt bother me much, the ammonia seems to subside naturally. The only real problem I have is sniffing it, it always seems to get acouple grains in my throat, no matter how lightly I sniff it. The method of piching I mentioned before seems to work best right now, especially with absinthe, that one is much easier to take, it stays clumped better or somthing
I had the same thing when taking toque. I’d always get it to my throat and it would make me cough no matter how lightly I sniffed it. It is a fine snuff and after awhile you’ll get use to taking it. Now I can take it just fine and it’s one of my favorite snuffs to have on me all day.
I have a theory that people who were heavy chain-smokers (like I was), TEND not to mind the ammonia as much because they were used to harshness of flavors etc.
Ordered from mr snuff on the 2nd and my order still isn’t here. How did Vito get his so fast.
@giaach My order shipped on 1/16 and arrived today the 23rd. so 6 business days. Not bad from UK to Iowa.
I just got my mr. snuff order. And I do get a hint of ammonia. But, It doesnt bother me at all. I not only was a smoker for 10 years, but where I worked we had a vent that vented ammonia of such concentration that it was like tear gas, it makes it very hard to inhale deeply… this isnt anywhere near that.
That sounds very unpleasant johnny! Only tin i’ve really noticed it in was a 10g chocolate toque. Soon shifted though. Didn’t really bother me but I like the cheese and bacon so who am I to judge!
Why the hell is it taking so long for me when I’m right here in NYC. You would think the package would come to the east coast first seeing how trans-Atlantic transport is so common.
chill dude, it has to come through customs. Sometimes customs takes forever to clear a package. Read the FAQ on mr. snuff about how long you have to wait for resolution if it truly is lost. The queens mail service takes like 30 days before inquiries can be made. Next time drop a bit more cash for the trackable package.
@ JohnnyFriday I didn’t go with the trackable service because I heard that type of parcle service takes longer. Not sure how true that is but I figured screw it.
I had some counterfeit coach purses held in customs for 3 weeks. And some chinese e-cigarrettes for about the same time. It happens. let us know when you get it.
I had 10 tins of toque once. Opened em all up in my room for about an hour, went back in and got an instant headache. There was so much ammonia smell I had to air the room out.
@giaach I have had snuff orders take 6-8 buisiness days and I have had others take 14-16 buisiness days. It is always a coin toss, but when you order from the same place very often, you find a common range for how long it takes from that place.
tracking does not take longer. often it is a scanner on an assembly line belt
@bob That is correct but Air Saver or whatever the trackable parcel service is was noted as taking longer. Regardless if I could have paid 40$ for UPS I would have done it.
