Journal of a Snuffer

Week 1 I welcomed myself to the wide world of snuff a week ago…and today I thought, “Maybe I’ll share a little tiddle - and maybe fish for a piece of advice or two.” So here goes. When I found out that people still shoved tobacco up their nose, I was intrigued. “This sounds like a little piece of history still hanging on. I love history… I love tobacco, so why not?” So I checked out my local tobacco shop and picked up a couple British & German blends. You can guess what I had in my nose on that drive home. So with a tear in my eye and fire in my nose, I weaved a straight line down the highway thinking, “What have I done!” My sweet wife had a good laugh. “What are you up to now”, she managed to get out between the chuckles. “Nothing!”, I lied. Well, I must say it’s been a wild ride this week… kinda like a party up my nose. I do find that I love all the wonderful rich smells (except for QSnuff’s Jasmine - it smells like that old lady trying to hit on me at the pharmacy), and I also find myself strangely fulfilled by that tobacco sting, but I must admit, “It’s not all been good.” I’m sneezing, my nose either runs or gets clogged for hours, the back of my throat is tender, and I can’t seem to stop myself from wanting more. It feels like I’m allergic to a bouquet of cool spring flowers, but they smell so sweet that I can’t pull myself away. Aaaaachoooo!!! What have I gotten myself into? Will the sneezing allergy-like symptoms fade? Are better times ahead? MasterBrewer

I’m almost afraid to comment here…feels like I’m intruding on someones personal diary! The sneezing and burning will fade in time as your nose gets used to your new hobby. It does nothing BUT get better from here…you’ll be a full on snuff freak in no time! I would like you to expound on the old lady hitting on you in the Pharmacy, sounds like a good laugh there!! Kudos on such an entertaining read, and welcome!! Buckle up and enjoy the ride. =)

Agreed, keep going, the symptoms are unlikely to persist once your body gets used to taking snuff. You might want to get yourself a cotton/silk handkerchief or two and I find a High Dry Toast dries up profuse nasal secretions. For the blockages, Hedges should do the trick and or a neti pot once a day.

MasterBrewer I returned to it two or three months ago. There’s a world in all these snuffs. I have to admit it’s not all joy when you start. You have to learn how to handle the different sorts and what works for you and what you really like. Doses and pinching or snuffing off the hand etc. It’s quite a jolt to the body system at first. For instance, some people like to go to bed with something nice up their nose, I found the nicotine sticks in the system too much and prefer to rinse my nose with water before bed (some people use a neti pot). I’ve blitzed the English snuffs and had a wonderful time learning about and enjoying them. I’m now going to try some American scotches and German styles. I use a good SP style every day and go into the varieties in the evening for recreation. Body is used to it and some of the slightly alarming effects of this new intake of N have vanished. Pipesmoking down to a third of previous levels. All good, I’d say. Hope you’re up to snuff.

Welcome, MasterBrewer. Yes, the sneezing will fade in time, although you will probably still sneeze once in a while. Sniff gently so that the snuff doesn’t go to your throat, and you’ll avoid the tenderness. As you try different brands, you’ll find the ones that are right for you. But don’t throw away the ones that don’t suit you now – put them aside in airtight containers. The snuff you dislike now may be a favorite in six months or a year’s time.

A thoughtful and erudite post that I have enjoyed reading. I am glad that things are settling down now - neophytes always seem to snort rather than inhale and subsequently blow their heads off until they learn better - gently does it! Try now to stick to one snuff at a time for a couple of days each so that you can verify which snuffs you can take with ease from those you have not mastered and separate them for storage for later use as PipenSnusnSnuff wisely says. I made the stupid mistake of dumping some HDT because it made me cough and sneeze - but now one year on I think I could manage - I no longer sneeze but still occasionally cough though. Thank you for sharing your diary with us - I look forward with vicarious pleasure to the next entry!

Yup, when i started, I got sick for a week or two! It’s like your body has to get used to taking snuff…

Good read! You’re on a great new path and exactly the right attitude to make it work for you. I remember all the same feelings from when I first took up snuff a few months ago, and like Fischy I can say it all gets better from here. Enjoy!
