Jaap Bes

HOLY CRAP!! This kind and generous craftsman makes some exquisite snuff. I am happily putting spoon to snuff to nose with his collection of “plain” snuffs. There’s nothing plain about them. With minimal additions, and using the power of windmills, he creates snuff that delivers pure tobacco pleasure. As soon as I can secure a second mortgage, or build up the balls to rob a bank, I’m going to invest in 100 gram tubs of Hollandse Bolongaro, Mettaijer, St. Omer No. 1, Latakia A/O 1860 and FCV. I’ll need another snuff spoon. I might just wear this one out sampling these creations. As a rule, I’m not easily impressed. It takes some supreme effort from the snuff artisan to get me excited. I’m Impressed! I am also a little bit addicted. I imagine this is synonymous with being a “little bit pregnant”, which I am not. Appearances can be deceiving. These five snuffs are headed to the top of my ever expanding rotation. I have visions of starting and ending the day with these, along with generous portions of HDT and SG Black Coffee to break up this diurnal snuff induced dream. For those of you with toilet minds, diurnal has nothing to do with double porcelain pee receptacles.

I think DK makes some of the best snuff out there too. Lately Mettaijer, Pompadour, and Mississippi have been my faves. The Gingerbread and Choco are the two that I tried first and still consider them some of the finest dessert type snuffs, these two are also what I usually offer any non snuffing friends if they are at all curious about snuff. I am not sure why DK is not more popular, it could be the hard to spell names? Or the strange tap boxes? Maybe the too course grinds? I don’t know but I certainly hope that Jaap can continue making these snuff masterpieces for a long time to come.

I currently have at least 100g of virtually ALL of his snuffs that are offered. There are precisely 0 that I can say are bad. 0 that are really duplicated elsewhere. 0 that I would not refer. I do have my favorites - Like Peppermuntsnuif, and Latakia A/O, but definitely enjoy all of them - even the non tobacco ones - which to my experience are unique in their own right. So, I have to concur with @chefdaniel that Jaap Bes is indeed a genius. (the ‘only’ negative for me is the tap boxes which is just a personal issue.) Always looking forward to new creations from ‘the Windmill.’

nah the tap boxes are a big issue. They’re perfect for spices, all wrong for snuff. I always end up using them as a tin. I.e. I take the top off and pinch from the main part. Though at least it’s the opposite of poschls where you pay more money for the packaging then the snuff.

@willc; stogie and bob: thanks for the kind words. I plan to release this year “een Hollands snuifje” Virginia tobacco flavoured with a sauce containing: oil of Cascarilla bark, Orris root, Sassafras wood, Elderberry blossom, Honey, Salmiak, Potash, Salt and wine vinegar. A pretty complex snuff and I am curious how it turns out. The tap boxes will stay for some time, but I am looking for a replacement. Jaap Bes.

@snuffmiller‌ The “een Hollands snuifje” sounds very interesting. Is this one based off an old recipe or is it something new? Either way I am looking forward to it.

I am looking forward to your new creation, Jaap, though you’ll have to work hard to surpass Musinotabak!

@snuffmiller‌ Will you use fermented Virginia in this latest creation? Not that it will make a damn bit of difference in my purchasing decision because I’m putting it in my bucket regardless. Just curious. BTW I managed to hoover up 5 grams of Hollandse Bolongaro in less than two days. That is one great snuff.

@willc and chefdaniel: The recipe for “een Hollands snuifje” comes from a German book dating back to 1880 in which it was called: Holländischer Tabak aus Virginischer Tabaksblätter and yes it will be fermented. Jaap Bes.

I like the dK fermented Virginias! I think the abbreviated name is more user friendly than the original one.

Tabaksblatter sounds like what you see in your hankerchief just before it goes in the wash. Pompadour and Latakia AO 1860 are my faves from Jaap.

I have so much Musinotabak in my nostrils right now I dread the blowout. Bless Jaap!

Planning to order more De Kralingse snuffs after looking at this post. Cheers!

De Kranlingse Limburgertabak is nothing short of an absolute masterpiece.
