Jaap Bes is a genius

I tried a container of AP my very first order. It didn’t make a big impression. I was a newb and continued exploring and establishing my preferences. I don’t like fine flours much. Most days at work I’m using a KB or Princes variant. At home I prefer Taxi and Ntsu, and always take schmalzler after dinner. I placed a small order last week to bolster my Gwayi inventory, and I added a couple of Jaap’s snuffs to my order to revisit them with a different perspective. Bon Bon was good, but… Holy cow, Prins Regent!!! Are you kidding me? I have never gotten this kind of explosive aroma from any snuff. Big, complex and very long lasting, which totally goes against my normal impression of scents, which normally are quite fleeting for me. Judged as a tobacco? Good, better than average but it doesn’t make me want to quit the SG and Gwayi fan clubs. Judged as the…olfactory landscape Jaap has painted for my nose to take in, astounding. I am going to order more, and bulk on my favorites. This community needs to support men like Jaap with our snuff dollars to show our appreciation for a man that is obviously doing exactly what he was intended to do. An excellent, artisanal product, and I wish I would have figured that out sooner than I did, but I’ll make up for it on my future orders. Prins Regent is extraordinary.

we do support jap. I get at least one of his snuffs per order. Only one disapoint in the batch. The pine tree scented one and my histamines don’t get along too well. :frowning:

To much credit for a voluntary miller :"> Jaap Bes.

I have never had a snuff with such a wonderful, enduring scent. A truly special snuff, thank you Jaap!

I intend to try one of the chocolate variants in the next order I place at SnuffStore, and after that glowing report it looks to me like I’ll have to try the Prins Regent too now! Are all of your snuffs a similar gind to Pompadour/Bon Bon and Hollandse Bologaro, Jaap? Doesn’t matter, I was a bit surprised by the grind originally as I was used to the fine style Wilson’s has, but I wonder if the tobacco scent comes out more with yours because of it. I love that.

the one chocolate one I tried is really good in my opinion the best chocolate snuff I’ve tried. The choco creme latakia variant. Very smooth and the creme part is accurate.

@HR_pufnsnuff, seems to me that most of the grinds are indeed pretty close. I like it, easy to work with and yes the aroma’s do linger and are SO satisfying!!!

“There is: micrometer or mu 1/1000 of a milimeter. The latakia types of de Kralingse are sieved through 250 mu and the Virginia type through 400 mu. Jaap Bes.” This was posted some time ago by @snuffmiller so I am not sure if the Bolongaro and the others made with this fermented Virginia use similar sieves. Even so the particles of those seem to have length to them so those would pass through while still being somewhat larger.

Yes, the Latakia based snuffs are a finer grind than the Virgina, but sometimes they seem coarser because they are released with much more moisture. Bolongaro, Bon Bon, etc are of the fermented Virgina, but the mill seems the same, (going by memory). If you buy the fermented ones in bulk, I advise you to freeze them. A few of us have learned the hard way that they will grow mold if left unused for very long.

No clue on the new Karotten ones’s grind.

What is said above closely resembles the truth. All Latakia types are sieved over 250 mu. However when moist, it tends to clump a little. The Virginia types are sieved over 400 mu, with the exeption of the Mettaijer and Gingerbread. These are sieved over 250 mu. Because the Virginia types are stamped, prolonged stamping can lead to a larger portion of finer particles. This holds also for the all the fermented Virginia types. The samples of St. Omer No. 1 I sent were sieved over 400 mu. As Xander stated above the Virginia types, specially the fermented ones, can develop mold growth when stored long in the 100 grams air tight containers. That’s why they now have a sticker with the warning. If there is need for a finer type of snuff, let me know and I’ll look what we can do. Jaap Bes.

I would definitely be interested in a finer grind of any of the de Kralingse snuffs, as they tend to make me sneeze a lot, as much as I love the flavours I can’t take very much of any of them at one time, which is a shame, as I love the aromas so much. I’m going to keep taking them, however much I sneeze, though!

Funny, they don’t make me sneeze, but I have to watch it as, if I take a big pinch of any of the three tobacco ones I have, my nose starts to run a little, but if in private I just do gentle sniffs as long as possible cos I don’t want to lose that lovely scent! The thimgs we own up to here, eh… :)) I think I’d miss the grinds that are used now, I’ve got used to them.

I will admit to sending my Macuba through the coffee grinder for a short spin. Allows me to cram a bit more in.

Now isn’t this a pleasant site to have beside you - along with a nice pot of fresh ground coffee?

Lunecat, where do you live, when will you be out, and do you keep your spare key under the mat?

My doberman and rottweiler sleep next to my snuff and tobacco “cellars” so I have no worries about some snuff crazed burglar sampling my stash. The cat likes to play with the empty tap boxes, thinks they’re mice. (Thank you fredh)

If you all like the Molen’s snuffs, then I suggest you make a donation to the “Stichting De Kralingse Snuif & Specerijen Compagnie”, or translated the Foundation De Kralingse snuff & spice company. It is this foundation that works with volunteers only and without a profit to keep the old windmills in Rotterdam going and produce historic snuffs. The prices for the snuff are kept very low this way as I can compare it with Tobacco sales in Holland. Look on http://www.snuifmolens.nl/index\_en.html for more information. You can become an annual supporter of the foundation for instance. With IBAN bank transfers in Europe that wouldn’t be to hard I think, just ask for the details by using the contact page of the site if you are willing to support the making of the snuffs you like. I’m going to be a supporter, who joins?

I’m signing up. Can’t let a piece of history fade away. I type this with a snout full of S. Omer hoping it’s available in bulk soon.

@Salmiak and @chefdaniel: Thanks for your support but let me put things straight. Our foundation does not own the windmills! The mills are owned by the town of Rotterdam. However the towncouncil has the mills put up for sale because they will economise on the maintenance costs (Euro 60.000,- pro year). Our foundation runs only the operation (snuff manufacturing and spice milling) of the mills with the help of two sponsor companies. The best way to support us is by buying our products. Or convincing the towncouncil that they have an obligation in preserving the windmills as a production facility which they have owned already for 98 years. And chefdaniel: last Saturday we sieved several kg’s of St. Omer No.1 so we can deliver again in 100 gram packages. Jaap Bes.

I’m now a very happy man.
