There has been a bit of discussion recently regarding Imperial Tobacco changing their snuff making back to the UK and new tins (for the record, they may be a bit leaky, but i like the small rectangular box’s). I have just recieved the new 25g of Medicated 99 and they are finally labelling it correctly as 20 grams (the quantity changed some years ago, not sure exactly when). Also, much to my disgust, the 20g tin is a McChrystal’s tin and no longer vaccum packed. This is a step backwards in my opinion. Nearly all pipe tobacco is vaccum sealed, even some bulk, and so too should snuff be, in my opinion. Got some vac sealed SG Wild duck at the same time and damn that is good stuff.
That’s disappointing news. I have some SP #1 and Medicated 99 on the way to me now. I liked the sturdiness of the old tins.
Yup, I just got a 25g tin of SP 1 and it’s maybe a little more than half full. Wonder what the deal is with putting less in their tins.
I should have added to the original post that i still absolutely love all three J & H snuffs but vac sealed tins are the best (mason jars do generally dry out a little over time) when your talking decades of storage. In the UK you may always be able to pop around the corner and buy a tin or two but here in Australia the sale of all smokeless tobacco has been banned for 20 years. All we need now is some do-gooder loser to decide that its in the peoples best interest if they banned all importation and i would be up the creek without a paddle or snuff. That’s why i have chosen to store at least 10kg (6.5 so far) so that at least i will always have a modeate amount to use and if i dont use it all i know that there are one or two of my kids who would happily assist. As i have previously posted, i opened a 20+ year old tin of Top Mill and while it tasted slightly aged it was still pungent and devine.
I’m surprised they kept those heavy tins for so long, they were pipe tobacco tins really - must have cost them more than the snuff that was inside.
So good news turned bad! Those McChrystal’s type large tins are ok with relatively high turnover, I’ve been buying those for years and snuff has always been good but I see problems with low turnover and storage.
I had hoped things would go the other way, with more companies following JHW’s example and vac packing their snuffs.
