Is this a rebranded Taxi?

After trying some Magnet Menthol (that I loved) I decided to take out one of the tins I found during my summer vacation - it seemed too dry at first so I left it closed in my freezer, to try to moisten it up a bit. Apparently the experiment was successful, and I found myself a rather interesting snuff - that I wouldn’t be able to find again if I wanted, so please help me identifying it. Here’s a picture: http://twitpic.com/2s6pxf - as you can see, the name is simply “Mentolino”, but it’s produced in South Africa by Swedish Match. The color is brown (a little darker than the photo shows), the grind is medium (at least in my experience - the closest grind I have seen is Toque Berwick Brown). What is very interesting, though, is the flavor: beneath a pretty much standard menthol (possibly with a little camphor), I can smell a very strong tobacco base, that reminds me of some cigars I got from the Canary Islands. I guess I’d describe it as having a wooden, almost herbal scent - the only cigarettes I can think of that smell almost (but not quite) like that, are Gitanes sans-filtre, and I might be wrong on this account since I haven’t smoked one (or smelled, for that matter) in ten years or so. Anyway - the manufacturer and place of production, as well as the 12g plastic container, make me think it’s a rebranded Taxi Menthol - can anyone confirm?

Pieter would be the one to ask. Looks very interesting though. Where did you find that?

Mentolino is an Italian snuff…see “where are the French and Italians”.

@Pieter - only the name is Italian, as you can see from the label it’s manufactured in ZA… I’ll be looking for Italian snuff this week - there should still be two sorts available, I’d like to try them =)

@ pgcd: I’ve never seen this one before, also the writing is not all English. This might be a snuff (only guessing) made in South Africa for the the Italian/overseas markets. Grind also looks a bit like Jaap’s de Kralingse style! Please check the thread I’ve bumped up, you might find something there. The South African branch of Swedish Match now belongs to Philip Morris International.

Its for the Swiss market. “tabac à priser” is French for “snuff”. The health warnings are in all 3 major languages spoken in Switzerland (Geman, French, Italian). Its available at online Swiss merchants I posted before: HereHere!and Here.Looking at the grind and color of your photo, it does not resemble Taxi Menthol. It does resemble Best Blend Wilson’s (Top Mill) Menthol, which Swedish Match also now makes for the South African market. See thread called something like “the other, Other Wilsons”. That one is available from Nicotine Rush and Mr. Snuff, so only a taste comparison will do. I, myself, of course am always open to recieveing samples of exotic snuffs to review.

@Xander - if I can get my grubby paws on those Italian snuffs, I’ll be happy to send you a sample of all three. And yeah, I got it in CH (I forgot to mention that). I’ll check that thread, by the way, thanks for the heads up!

Ah, Xander, I think you’ve got it! It might be the Wilson’s of Rustenburg Top Mill Menthol which we buy in the big, “silver” tin. I think I’ve sent you one of those and I’ve also sent Filek 2 tins, if I remember correctly. I’ve also sent some to a couple of other members here. The tin can be very stubborn and hard to open. The menthol is very weak and it’s actually a roughneck kind of snuff.

@ Pieter: Yes, you did send two to me and I thank you. One is the large metal one which as you say can be stubborn. The second is a smaller portion and is in a plastic 10g tin, the same size and design as the Magnets and small Taxis. @pgcd: thank you as well!
