Is there a better way to take Rappee?

I’ve added two rappees and one princes to my collection, and although I love the smell and feel of it and can’t keep my fingers ou of the box, I just can’t figure out a decent teqnique to take it. If I take a normal pinch, it just goes everywhere and falls out of my nose. If I pinch it harder it clumps and then I have a solid object to,again, fall out of my nose. The best way I’ve found so far is to just have my hankie ready and after inserting the pinch immdediately hold my nose with the hankie for a few seconds, then repeat with the other nostrill. This makes it an “at home” snuff for the moment. Any pointers for a better teqnique?

Don’t be afraid to sniff full and hard with these. You can keep your snuff box under your nose to catch fallout. Also if they dry out a little they are easier to take. Just because they are stored moist does not mean they MUST be taken that way. That’s all I got for now.

Although I do often keep my snuff box under my nose to catch fall out, especially whilst snuffing in bed, the idea of taking recycled snuff is rather appaling, one must admit. Especially if that’s the last pinch of the night and then you store the bits which have, well, one’s mucouse mixed in, it’s just SNOT a very pleasant thing to have to think about.

I sqeeze my nostrils together with my fingers until the snuff gets sticky enough to stay in on its own. Sometimes I use a spoon with these, particularly the really course ones. I do hold the container under my nose to catch crumbs. These crumbs never stuck in the first place, so they are essentially unused and mucous free!

Unlike other grades, always gather as much as you can between thumb and forefinger and don’t, as recommended by Juxtaposer, be tentative with delivery. I recall the advice of Vivian Rose regarding gros snuffs - “a short sharp sniff s’nicely suffuses the snozzle with snuff” - or something very similar. Mr. Rose of GH Smith’s was probably the only Jewish snuffman in the trade, and had some memorable phrases. Contrary to most advice concerning beginners’ snuff, he maintained that coarse snuff was not suited to the tyro for the sort of reason you are experiencing.

With gros snuffs, you will be more successful if you take a spoon and transfer the snuff to the back of the hand. Then snuff heartily, then pinch your nose with your fingers for a second. Finally brush any spill off your shirt. Its not foolproof, but works much better than a pinch. That is why in former times working class men snuffed off the back of their hand and posh toffs pinched. The gros snuffs, like London Brown and Scotch Black, were less expensive.

I thought working class snuffed off the back of their hands because their fingers were dirty from working.

A little dirt will nay hurt a miner.

Black lung will.

Aye and coal gas too.

A variant on Roderick’s method is to take a smaller pinch, arrange it onto the tip of your forefinger, and then stick your finger up your nose. Wipe it around a little. Repeat with the other nostril. Then sniff a little. If you think you want more, just repeat the whole process again. It is the best method I found for taking WoS Brunswick, which is very coarse and wet. The caveat is that if you do this in a crowded, upscale restaurant, some people may be unhappy with your behaviour. If you lived through any of the “punk” scene though, you can just say “Oy oy oy!” and fight those stuffy, uptight old biddies… Best Regards, Geraldo

Mucus in your snuff? I doubt that any snuff that makes contact with nasal mucus would fall back out. Now that is an idea though…predigesting tobacco. Maybe some bromelain or papain.
