Have mentholated snuffs always existed or are they something relatively recent?
@Jakartaboy: In Holland menthol was already used during the 19th century. We still produce a tobacco free snuff powder called Mentholin. The recipe of which was written down by the original owners of the mills in 1860 and has still survived. Jaap Bes.
@snuffmiller, thanks for that input. I was just wondering if it’s an old, classic snuff flavouring, something that would have been found in the period when snuff use was at its height.
I suggest like Jaap does that menthol was already early used in snuff. But maybe it was not always called menthol. Levomenthol is extracted from the mint plants, and the current technique of extracting is now very different from the early days. I remember that as a child my mother would apply “Vicks” on my chest when I had a cold. It also seemed to contain camphor besides levomenthol. A very old folk remedy. Medicated snuff (as it was mainly called) served as medicine before Vicks was produced. For instance the McChrystal’s O&G have a very strong Vicks-like odour, it always remembers me of it. But you can rely on the fact I think that the name “menthol” was introduced later.
