I have seen a lot of people saying that Pöschl Is only “candy snuff”. I don’t think so. The items in the Pöschl line are the most of the people can find easily. What are your experiences with Pöschl products? Is it good or bad that Pöschl is so entrenched in the snuffing community? Does Pöschl project the image that modern snuffers want?
I think its good that they are so widely available, it exposes more people to snuff. And they are a snuff that most new snuffers find enjoyable. This is good because they are not turned off by snuff. But my personal opinion is that they do have some enjoyable flavors like the apricot, kloster andechs, alpina, but they are not easy going. By that I mean Poschl snuffs tend to really clog me up also make my nose run more than others. The grinds are too coarse as well. And really not very satisfying with a seasoned snuff user. Because of this I tend not to use Poschl that often. In the end it doesn’t matter what others think of a snuff, if you like it, thats all that matters.
I think Poschl are fine, I’m just not a huge fan of menthol and they seem to put menthol in everything! Having said that my first ever snuff was ‘President’. My favourite snuff for a while was Gawith ‘Apricot’ and I currently enjoy sniffing their ‘Cola’ snuff so I would not say I don’t touch the stuff ;o) Your questions are interesting. I guess its a good thing that Poschl are so entrenched as the very essence of snuff is the vast variety of snuffs on offer. Even though Poschl don’t really ‘float my boat’ its nice that if I ever faniced some its easy to get hold of. We need strong tobacco companies like Poschl to keep snuff alive! Your last question got me thinking about image. Snuff seems to get a mixed set of reactions from people. My own experience has never been very positive. People I meet seem to regard snuff taking as strange or eccentric. However some on this site report positive reactions so it varies from person to person and the area we live in plays a part too. Poschl products are good starter snuffs for those who have never tried snuff which is why I usually suggest my Cola snuff to people who haven’t tried it before. Is it a ‘candy’ snuff? I think it is but not in an unkind way. I would just say it was easy on the nose and a great snuff for beginners. I certainly wouldn’t recommend Rooster etc to someone whos never had it before! LOL Also Poschl boxs tend to be cool, the Apricot and Cola boxes are nice designs, colours and have cool writing :o) Snuff snobs are a dangerous breed and shouldn’t be allowed to spoil snuffing for others! ;o)
If you like it that is what matters.
Nice containers really very convenient. Poschl has some good snuffs. I think that when menthol is over used it may cause problems. Once or twice a day yummy. When I want menthol I want it strong. Poschl does a good job at that. Because it’s so widely available some snuffers may be tired of it. I can guarantee that if I could get my hands on a Poschl snuff that I have not yet tried I would.
And of course the Pöschl Schmalzlers are pretty good. Totally unlike their other offerings and well worth a try. I particularly like the Schmalzler A and the Perlesreuter.
Maybe it’s a German taste that didn’t catch on elsewhere because the standard for most of the snuffing world has been English snuffs.
I use the Pöschl snuffs only seasonal, during the colder seasons I like Gawith Apricot. In summer i really can t use it. But Pöschl also sells Schmalzlers, a perfect product without menthol.
Gawith Apricot was the very first decent snuff I ever tried and I will always keep it in my collection, even if it might be be for sentimental reasons only. It does make my nose water but I like that; when I feel a bit stuffed after a binge, I take some Apricot and “rinse” my nose. I also like Gletscher Prise and the late Robby’s Mint of which I still have ample supplies. I’m on my last tin of Packard’s Club and I will truelly miss this snuff. President is also very nice and I use it often.
I’m with Pieter on this one. I started with Gawith Apricot and although I don’t use it full strength much anymore, I do like to revisit every now and then. I have found that I quite like a little GA mixed in with my daily Rooster for an occasional treat. Tom NicotineRush.com
I really liked the Poschl products when I started on snuff. I still use them on occasion, but I prefer to pinch rather than sniff from the back of the hand. That makes the containers a bit of an incovience.
I must admit I have a tendency to be snobby about Poschl but thats a failing I’m willing to admit to. In actual fact they are a great benefit to the snuff world as they are very prominent and every time a smoker switches to snuff, its often with Poschl so another life saved from the horrible dangers of cigarettes. I do use Lowenprise and Apricot now and then, but for the most part find their range very ‘samey’, and I don’t think there is much imagination in their brands. Sure, they bring out cute ‘modern’ packaging and a lot of flavours, but always the same grind and with menthol in there. I’m with trout on this.
I’m still a relatively new snuffer but I am enjoying the Poschl brands for now. President was my first experience with a mentholated snuff and I think I will always feel warmly towards my honeymoon memories with it. I tried their fruit brands including cola and apricot and have nothing bad to say about them. (Chief Bull never took hold for me tho, something in it really turns me off.) Just when I thought I’d tried all the Poschl snuffs I’m finding more and more obscure and lesser known varieties out there. Exactly how many snuff brands do these guys make anyway? As for the apricot in particular, I’m currently working my way through a can as I write this. I like it but I seem to have lost my sensation of apricot in it and get a popcorn butter flavor instead. Not a bad thing just an oddity I’ve noticed, maybe from all the menthol in it that keeps draining my nose. These guys should work out some sort of reciprocal deal with Kleenex brand tissues, maybe include coupons for each others products in the packages or something. Again, not a bad thing for me since my girlfriend has several cats and the constant nose blowing keeps me unclogged so I can sleep over at her house on occasion. Oh, one more thing for you new guys out there. If you gently pry open the Poschl plastic dispenser boxes, you can refill them with whatever snuff you want and reuse them. A nifty little feature I like since the cans are convenient and easy to carry. I’d recommend a bullet or pinching tho for the finer grinds or anything you can’t routinely snort off the back of your hand.
I lost my snuff cherry to Gawith Apricot back in 1981. Hadn’t seen the stuff for many years but it crawled it’s way out of my subconscious a few weeks after quitting cigarettes in August '07. Went online to see if it still existed and if I could buy some. Ended up ordering some and a whole bunch of others when I saw the variety that was out there. Not in my regular rotation but I really enjoy it on the occasions I use it. Brings back fond memories every time.
I’ve bought three containers of Gawith Apricot and am going soon for another. It’s not as strongly scented as I would like, but all in all I really like this stuff, and compared to some others that my local tobacconist sells, you get more for the money, and that’s a definite plus with me.
IDGod , i kind of agree , when i bought a box of Gawith Apricot the menthol was so strong i couldn’t feel the Apricot , two months later it’'s better. GA is currently my favorite but that’s because i can’t get anything else but Poschl at the moment. This month the only snuff available was Gletscher Prise ! I seriously have to find a new source of income and order something without menthol , it gets old really fast.
I still like this for an on the road snuff. I went on a road trip to visit family for the holidays and gawith apricot just seemed the snuff of choice to start my day on the road. I think this is because I have always just osced that for my trip. Snuff just seems to engender a tradition of it’s use. It may be that scent is the most powerful memory trigger. I suppose the moral to this is to use snuff that you want to associate with an event and that will stay in your mind for a long time.
Pöschl products have their ups and downs. Red Bull is a very good, strong menthol, but I find it can be too clogging at times. I bought a ‘tin’ of Gawith Apricot when I first started using snuff, and have yet to make much of a dent in it. I must say though, the Ozona Raspberry is a very good snuff. I bought it at a tobacconist, along with President (nothing special), and it is definitely the best of their offerings, in my opinion. ~Snuffy
You know, a lot of that ‘candy’ stuff emanates from me, and I probably give the impression I hate Poschl! I must admit I am a bit scathing now and then but I think the apricot is a good snuff with a nice flavour. I don’t think its any kind of bad thing that Poschl are so entrenched because I am pro-snuff (of course!) and they get the stuff out there to folks. I just wish they would be a bit more imgainative or at least put their undoubted skills into making a few types that dont have menthol in them and are not milled to the same texture (discounting Schmaltzer). A Poschl toast? That would be interesting. The irony is that I think they do have a pretty good image and have excellent packaging.
Poschl obviously have a great distribution network so I personally think they are missing an opportuntiy by not doing some regional types. They do on a very small scale but they could ramp it up further and take over the snuffing world. Maybey they could start in Poland?
