Dean Swift is on sale for $1.99, but the tins are only 5g. So the question is, are they worth the buy? The flavors I am considering are SP Clove, Inchkenneth, and Camelopard. I’ve read the reviews but there seems to be mixed feelings.
They get mixed reviews but Dean does have its own fanbase. They are made by Wilsons of Sharrow, so nothing lacking in the expertise department. I guess try and see is the only answer. I would personally be put off by the 5g tins, which are small to say the least, my money goes on Wilsons own brand SP’s which are terrific.
I agree, the 5g tins are a huge turnoff. I’ll buy and see, like you said. The SP Clove sounds really nice and interesting, other than that everything else just seems very mentholated.
I have more of a problem with the tins than the snuff itself. Besides being tiny, the ink they use for the name of the snuff rubs off fairly quickly as well (Wilson’s regular tins do too) leaving you guessing the contents quite often.
Take a small piece of scotch tape and just cover the name over. That should keep it.
I’ve had some experience with the Dean Swifts. For the most part they seem rather lacking to me. $1.99 a tin is still quite cheap but you might consider other brands at a discount price such as the Dholakia blends. I haven’t tried all of the Swift blends but the ones I did weren’t that impressive. I’d much prefer a Poschl product or a local and cheap can of Garret. To each his own tho. I suppose they could always be used for a mixing base.
The way I see it, any snuff is worth the buy once, but just once. You’ve got to be a damn special snuff to get a re-buy from me. Once I have comsumed a tin of every snuff made, I will then narrow my focus and apply more economy to my purchaces. As far as Dean Swift goes. Jasmine could have been great, but its ruined, really ruined, with menthol. SP is not bad, both seem to have a characteristic base flavor to them which is ok and I guess unique to the brand. Only 2 I have tried so far.
the sp is the only snuff that makes my nose bleed. The peppermint isn’t bad. I like the inch kenneth it seems pretty unique and it goes really well with light (flavour not calories) lagers, though it’s reminds of granny perfumes. Though I’ll always have a soft spot for dean swift as it was my first snuff at 16.
I’m with Xander, although not quite sure I plan to sample every snuff in the world. I did just throw in a tin of Swift’s Dr. Johnson with the order I placed today on Nic-Rush.
The Dr. Johnsons is a pretty nice menthol.
This thread has been inactive for a few months, but I’ve had a few more Dean Swifts in that time. Inchkenneth I mentioned a few times as being to my liking though very floral, not one a lot of people would like. Tonight I tried Dean’s Own, and this is the first one I can confidently reccomend to the broader community. This is the first DS that is not overburdened with menthols and perfumes. Its just a solid simple plain SP type. It has a nice simple earthy mellow flavor like J&H Wilson or Samuel Gawith Yellow Crest. Finally a Dean Swift that will get 4 stars from me when I get around to reviewing it. (It only has one review up currently and its not very favorable)
@Xander Deans Own is the only snuff I’ve had of DS. I found it to be pretty decent. Haven’t read much on the reviews as being outstanding. Waiting for Cstokes to throw up a few reviews . I saw he got quite a few of Deans on his last delivery.
Cstokes is a little slow when it comes to reviews IMO. If he would write about half the snuffs he has, he would make Red Star run for cover and make ermtony fortify his rearguard! (just kidding guys its all in fun) I’d be pushing 300 if reviews if I would write more too. I wish I could identify scents better. I guess it takes practice. I like to have everything on hand to compare too. Anyway, that’s my initial impressions of Dean’s Own. I’ll get a proper review on the review site when I get to know it better. Best Dean Swift so far though, and I’ve had 6 of 12 of their current line-up.
Well, I´ve only had one of the DS´s so far and it kept me from buying any more of their range. And there are far too few reviews on some of them, that I´d get the impression I´m missing something there. Speaking of them. I really think a review site as snuffreviews is the most effective way to raise the interest on snuff. It did so for me, at least. I´d gladly take cover and see much more impressions posted there. As a pun you have to remember that it´s quite hard sometime to write such a review if you´re not born and raised in the english language. Sometimes I´m more, more often less successful for sure. I´d be quite happy to read much more Dean Swift reviews there!
Your reviews are good Red Star, especially for a non native speaker. However, for the native speaker it can still be a challenge. Formulating your ideas, comparing aganist similar brands, and detecting various scents are a challenge, especially if you don’t have enough time. The site seems to be stable though, so I’ll keep posting my thoughts there as fast as I am able. It is the most accessable way to raise interest, I agree. I hope my random thoughts posted here are helpful in the interim. Also we must me mindful that this sharing of snuffs so freely internationally is really in its infancy. Snuff itself is undergoing a rebirth of sorts so hopefully time is on our side. In the mean time, I recommend Dean’s Own.
I like the names of the snuffs, but not really overfond of the snuffs themselves.

Truth is, I am far too lazy (busy) to get around to writing 360 snuff reviews. I’m more than willing to give a quick summary, though. Perhaps over Christmas break I will write something up. But then again, I’m still trying to upload everything onto my site. I just finally finished imputing all of the snuff blends, not it’s on to thoughts. Look at my Conwood page, that is how the whole thing will look after a while.
Ok I’ll take a look. You don’t have to be the next Red Star. Just one review every couple of days (keep pace with me at least) is not too time consuming. A collection the size of yours has certain duties and resposibilites, you know. edit: ok I looked. That’s how it was last time I saw it. That’s pretty good. Reviews don’t have to be novels.
Dean Swift was made by Wilsons, although when I enquired about getting some for Snuff Store they told me they blended the last batch over five years ago and hadn’t done any since…
