I live in the states and was Just curious what this involves if I wanted to trade overseas. Is it ok to ship tobacco overseas? Any idea on how much more on average it costs? What do I do with customs? Any information is appreciated.
I would go to your local Post office ,They can give you exact details, There are many variables. airmail, tracking, insurance, delivery conformation, and customs declarations. weight and other factors to consider. Some of this information you can find out @ https://www.usps.com/search.htm?q=international%20shipping
Its easy. I do it all the time. Also been selling (non tobacco) on ebay since 1998, and a good percentage of the sales are international. Its ok to ship tobacco unless prohibited by the specific country. There are very few countries that prohibit it. When trading, I mark the customs form as “gift” rather than “merchandise.” At the PO they will tell you everything. There are little customs forms to fill out, all you really need to put in there is the contents and both addresses. Shipping varies by location, but is reasonably cheap between US-Canada, and US-Western Europe. Expect twice the cost of a domestic package the same size. Follow the link in shaman’s post for details. Approximate weight will help you.
So hypothetically if I was to send a tobacco product overseas instead of marking it as tobacco I mark it as a gift?
I hypothetically may have sent tobacco overseas through UPS and told them the package was a book about tobacco. heh
@distaind You can mark it tobacco or not, but mark it as a gift and not commerical. You’re not a business.
I always say “snuff” instead of “tobacco”. Most won’t know what that means and pass it on.
“collectable tins” always makes me smile.
Mr snuff puts “Nasal snuff” on all my packages and i’ve yet to be taxed on them which is weird as they tax the hell out of every other tobacco product including snus. I’ve recieved at least 30 orders so i’m assuming they are just ignorant of what Nasal Snuff is or they think it’s not really a tobacco product or just so weird and obscure they feel sorry for me. BTW now, when you included the GST they (Gov-customs) put on top of their tobacco tax (tax on tax) it’s $480 per kilo tax. Theiving scumbags.
Thanks guys. I feel more comfortable about it now.
