I take a low-dose pill for my blood pressure. It was given to me because I had too many headaches and the beta-blocker really seemed to help it. My blood pressure was only 130/something, so it was barely in the treatable range. It has been 110 - 120 since I started taking the pill; until yesterday when I almost blew a blood vessel. I hate going to doctors, and there is one in particular I hate the worst of all. He’s a really great guy and we get along like champs, it’s just the nature of the work that really bothers me. So, to combat this mad, mad anxiety I decided to load up on the nic to help me get ready to see him. I had half my upper jaw filled with Skoal Cherry, and let that soak for an hour, and then 2 Camel 99s during the 5 minute drive to go see him. When I got to his office my bp was 220/90 between the nic and anxiety! I think I had a little bit too much nic on that one. Anyone ever do something this stupid to themselves too? I’m off to my regular doc today to make sure everything is just peachy. No nic loading for that one I guess.

130/something? im 19 and mines 150-160/something (not on any nicotine), it was roughly the same range before i picked up smoking again(which im stopping for snus now). they still say they wont treat it because im so young/ apparently its only just in the treatment range. Also, they arent aware of the smoking.

I drank a lot of coffee a lot of coffee because I had insomnia and I had to go to a physical. I got a warning that my blood pressure was aproaching a bad spot. I said well I drank three pots of coffee and haven’t been sleeping. The look was priceless. Then they said yeah that might do it just check your blood pressure and if it gets this high again when you’re not drinking so much coffee and don’t drink that much coffee. Then again it reminds me of untill he finaly told the doctor the truth about his diet my father went from your body hates you so much and is trying to kill you to oh really wow it’s amazing you made it this far you mutant freak. (if you’ve ever watched the simpson and thought Homers diet was an exageration you do not know my dad.

Wow that’s pretty scary Dogwalla. I’m only 20 but about a year ago I had to go to the hospital and my blood pressure was a little high, 130 over something. Not dangerous but definitely seems high for someone my age. Since then I quit smoking but I’ve read that nicotine on its own, even without the carbon monoxide, has negative effects on the heart. I’ve started jogging a month so hopefully that helps keep things in check.

S

130/something is nothing. Without treatment, mine is in the 150-170/90ish range. With meds, it’s 130/80 which is fine. 220/90 is really in the very dangerous zone. Stop drinking caffeine (it makes a big difference) and lower your nic. Nicotine is a stimulant and will increase your anxiety and BP.

B

Nicotine is not too bad for the heart. Or blood pressure no more so then caffine is. Which is to say if you have a serious problem you might want to stop. Though in many studies it seems like the carbon monoxide is the primary reason cigs harm the heart. Not clearly the only but clearly the worst part of cigs on the heart. Carbon monoxide bonds with the red blood cells better then oxygen does. So your body has to pump with more force to get more blood around because it’s not as effective. Additionaly where the effects of nicotine might increase blood pressure it’s immediate and passes quickily. Carbon monoxide stays bound to red blood cells for a long time, longer then oxygen does.

@lunecat Are you mad? Biking? In all seriousness, I do ride my bike to/from work during decent weather, but we’re just getting out of daily highs below freezing. Walking can bite my frozen ass in that kind of weather. During normal weather it wouldn’t be out of the question, it would just be more time away from work to head to the doc on two wheels. Sweatiness in a corporate environment isn’t highly desirable. @SnuffySnuff I think I’d rather give up nicotine than caffeine. Seriously. The withdrawals would be worse, but I think my life is happier with Vitamin C.

S

mine without meds is 200+/100+ , just yesterday on meds it was 155/95 at the local pharmacy with pulse rate of 87 (I always take picture of it (especially when in stage 1 or 2 hypertension) I think I may need to go see a specialist about it because the Atenolol is not working as well as it used to, my stress level is probably partial to blame though.

S

Mines been going up lately but after reading all of your numbers I’m feeling better. I’m 50 and it is starting to creep up.

B

My blood pressure has been way past the danger zone my entire life. I am not worried I have blood pressure. reading this tread I fit right in. normal for a nicotine fiend.

Wow! I’m the exact opposite I’ve given up caffeine so I can keep my vit N going. My body can’t take both vit N and caffeine (makes my anxiety go crazy) but I’m OK with just vit N. I drink decaff tea and decaff coffee when I get the urge for those drinks, although I still have to be careful with the decaff coffee because it still has some caffeine in it and after 3ish cups I’ve got the shakes. Decaff tea I can drink all day long thankfully.

155/95 is way too high. See a Dr asap.

Yeah I’m with you, I still drink coffee but I can easily go without it without so much as a headache. Need my snuff much more! I guess 130s isn’t too high though there were a couple of occasions in the hospital when it got into the lower 140s but then again I was very nervous from being in a hospital. I can’t wait to take it again after a few more weeks of jogging and see if it’s improved at all, I know my stamina has increased a lot in less than a month, I’ve gone from jogging a minute a time to jogging five minutes or more at a time. I’m still out of shape but I’m definitely feeling better.

I saw my GP today just to be safe and my bp was 127/80. I decided to test latter and load up on the same nic blast I had yesterday when I went to the pharmacy today. It was only up to 131/87. I guess the answer for me is that anxiety is WAY worse to my system than all my favorite *ines are. I haven’t had a lot of wins lately, so I’m celebrating this one big time.

C

@Dogwalla Glad to hear it was in range. I was at the dentist today and mine was 123/76. Usually mine spikes before a procedure but they took it while I was distracted. Plus it was just a cleaning and I wasn’t really anxious. Cheers guys and keep an eye on those high numbers.

My blood pressure is 120/60 sometimes … others its 150/90 my heart rate sometimes goes down to 55bpm … and upto 110bpm. Im only 31 but have treated my body like shit, been a smoker for almost 20yrs, drink alot, did alot of drugs in my teens and sleep maybe 4-5 hrs a day… Sometimes i can feel my heart almost ’ bottom ’ out i guess is a good way to put it … it beats real hard then i get this hollow like feeling in my chest, followed by a few seconds of weakness …my doctor tells me im fine lol …

H

Yeah dvsfaust that sounds like a palpitation to me, where your heart sort of “skips a beat”, they’re harmless. This morning took my BP and it was 131/70, I guess that’s not bad at all, I’d love to get systolic pressure into the 120s though.

P

It’s amazing to me how much better I feel after I started walking daily. I only walk a mile, but it makes a huge difference.

B

walking is great. Not just for the body but it’s a good time to think.

Man I took my blood pressure last night after taking a lot of snuff and it was 143/75 or something like that, took it this morning and it was still 138/70 with no snuff in my system. I know that’s not dangerously high but it seems way too high for someone my age. I’m gonna cut back on the snuff a bit (no more chainsnuffing) and see if that helps. It’s kind of upsetting, I’m not stressed out, my weight’s normal, I exercise, I do drink a bit more than the Surgeon General recommendation but still, very disconcerting. Edit: well my little 14 year old brother took his reading with that machine and he was 133/70 so I’m starting to think there’s just something wrong with the machine haha. Eh but then my sister took it and hers was normal, I just need to get it checked by an actual physician I think. Anyway both my parents are nurses and they said blood pressure at my level isn’t really anything to worry about, just something to keep an eye on. I’ve always paid attention to my caloric intake (used to be really overweight) but I’m going to start paying attention to the nutritional qualities of my foods too. Though I don’t overeat I don’t think my diet is very healthy either. Thanks for the advice basement_shaman! Edit again: I doubt this is interesting to anyone, I can be a bit of a worry-wart if you can’t tell, but I had my mom check my BP with a manual thing we had this evening and it was 110/60, she tested it on herself and it was giving accurate readings for her. As an experiment I stuffed my nose with Kendall Brown, then took some IHT to top it off, and it was 120/50. Glad to see that while snuff does have an effect on my heart it’s not as crazy as the machine reading was leading me to believe!

Garlic,Cinnamon,Onions,Olive oil,Oregano,Hawthorn,Cardamom all reduce blood pressure problems. Get some and use them daily in your food. Ayurvedic Medicine In Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, high blood pressure is treated according to each person’s dosha, or constitutional type. The pitta type may have a flushed face, red eyes, headaches, light sensitivity, irritability, and nosebleeds. The kapha type may have excess weight, water retention, high cholesterol, sluggishness. The vata type may feel cold, have gas, bloating, or constipation, insomnia, or nervousness, worry, or anxiety. You must treat the blood pressure problem according to your type.

A couple of years ago I had a massive deterioration in my back condition, which got broke some years ago. Without really being aware of what I was doing I gradually overdosed on morphine and a drug called Gabapentin which is used for epilepsy but has an off label use in pain management. By the time I got to hospital I was jabbering like a lunatic and hallucinating like it was Alice in wonderland. All from taking a dose too many that messed up my perception, then taking another etc etc. Not a nice memory.

When I go to the doc mine is like 140/70. When I am at home it’s like 130/70. A nurse even cane to the house for an insurance physical and said it was 130/70. But put me in front of a doc and it goes right up. The doc put me on meds and the nurse started to argue with him. At his age and weight that’s normal! She protested. One dirty look from the doc stopped her. Ever since I have been suspicious of wether or not I actually needed the meds.

B

For the people that think that only western medicine is legit. Garlic is proven to be good for the heart. My opinion is that most medicine practices have some legitimacy. Or in other words don’t discount herbs and such.

D

Don’t forget the chile peppers. One of the single most beneficial things you can eat…I’ve been a chilehead for many years now, and definitely notice the benefits. At 55 years old and weighing 205 pounds on a 6-1 frame*, my BP has averaged 117/73 over the last 3 years, and my cholesterol levels are better than men half my age. Hell, I still have my hair! Okay, that’s genetics, but you get the point. *You’ll have to do your own conversions, I’m feeling lazy this morning.

H

The pharmacist actually used the word “perfect” - which I put down to walking 6miles every day.

I’ve worked out that since Jan 1st you’re now 246 miles away from where you live.

S

Sounds to me like the OP’s BP problem was emotional, and doctors know well that just the stress of seeing the doctor will raise blood pressure significantly. I myself rarely see doctors, and when I do, I am always on the verge of running out of the office in terror. Seriously. Smoking the cigs will definitely raise BP because the carbon monoxide starves you of oxygen. Just the oral and nasal stuff shouldn’t, and if it reduces stress it should actually lower your BP. Recommend you talk to the doc about this anxiety problem and see if there is anything he can do, and leave out the cigs next time, see if it is any better.

D

I went to my GP to get things checked out and it was fine. Just anxiety about the other doc. Any time I see the brain doc it flips me out. Funny though, he gave me extra stuff for my anxiety. hahaha
