Good evening, I hope I am posting in the correct place. I am currently working on setting up a new online shop based in the UK specialising in hard to get brands of Indian Snuff. The shop will be online in a few months time after I have finished sorted out the last of my suppliers and dealt with all the various paperwork. Currently I have suppliers for about a dozen different brands however if anyone would like to recommend any brands of Indian Snuff they are having a hard time getting hold of and would like me to try and stock it please let me know. When it is all up and running I will be posting a discount code on here to show my support for this forum. I look forward to hearing your suggestions for brands to stock. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all.
Ooh, very good news! I love Indian snuffs. It’s great to have more merchants to choose from. I’m afraid I don’t have any suggestions outside the regulars, such as 6 Photo, 7 Photo and Dholakia.
I only know a half dozen or so that are available. So what ever you stock i will try eventually. You will ship to USA ?

I will be trying to ship to the USA however it depends on the restrictions on the card merchant. However i’m sure off the books something could be sorted.
Looks like I have sorted out the final suppliers. I will be shortly letting everyone on here know what I will be stocking so if they are outside of EU they can message me and we can sort an order out. Cheers and everyone have a great new year
Can’t get enough Indian Snuff. IMHO
Right final list of what I’m going to be starting off stocking is the following. Hopefully some or a lot of the below snuffs will be new to you, which is the whole point of what I’m trying to achieve here. 6Photo - All 7Photo - All 41Photo - All V V Vartak - All TPS Madras - Black and Brown Dholakia - Chakali, Kamal,Ganga,Manjul,Taj Photo,Begum,Do-Kamal NB Madras Krushna Photo Brand Punjabi Sagandhsagar Rose Horse Brand Joshi Pooja Ke Phool Sugandhi Rose Swastika Queen & Loin Lion Black Bul Bul Panjabi NC Madras And hopefully the following if they ever get around replying to my order request. 5Photo - All Arora - All Uma - All Shivam (50Photo) - All Hopefully should be finalising the orders for all the above in the new year and hopefully get them all a month or so after that. As I mentioned before any Indian brands that are not on the list above and you want me to try and stock just let me know because I’m trying to offer every Indian snuff its possible to get. All the best
I’ve got six fairly obscure Indian snuffs that I picked up on travels in Tibet: 1. Umbrella Brand Madras Snuff 2. NC Super Special Snuff 3. 555 Sri Sastha Snuff 4. 5 Photo Super Himalaya Snuff 5. Sri Vijayalakshmi Tiger Snuff 6. Some white snuff in a long discarded packet, the cheapest and most basic snuff available. I’m not up to extensive reviews right now, but the Tiger Snuff is very good, a bit like Dholakia Sparrow, fine, dry and strong. The NC is extremely dark, oily, and strong. The Himalaya snuff smells like an Indian temple, with a bit of menthol thrown in. I don’t remember the 555, but it seemed like a good, straightforward, honest, unscented snuff. The white snuff is interesting, obviously a close relative of Dholakia White and the Elephant, but finer, if that’s possible. It’s a curiosity and occasionally finds itself in my rotation, but I’d have to say that I think the DW and WE are distinctly better. In Tibet, it cost something like a three cents per gram. I’m happy to have had the pleasure of a rare and obscure snuff, but I wouldn’t pay the price that make it worth someone’s while to export it overseas. Would I order any of these again? Maybe the Tiger. It was fun hunting them down and smuggling them into Indonesia through customs, I guess I bought around 500 grams in total. I’d recommend anyone to try any of them, just on general principles. None of them were really, really bad, although I’m not really fond of the Himalaya much. If you liked that kind of thing, it might be just your thing, though. Always good to have more variety on the market.

Personally i have the 5 photo super Himalaya I very much enjoy the scents of India. Tried to get my hands on the umbrella snuff however their emails where just bouncing back, shame as I have heard good stuff about them. The tiger snuff looks like a good lead I have sent an enquiry off to my suppliers to see if he can get hold of it. I doubt I will be able to offer it at 3 cent a gram (wish I could lol) but prices will be around $4-5 for a 50 gram tub of snuff. Thank you for the leads my friend.
To make things more exciting if anyone brings any new Indian brands of snuff to my attention that I am unaware off I shall send them 50grams of 7Photo Swami Snuff free of charge as a thank you. The 7Photo snuff is sealed manufactured in Nov 2013 so its as fresh as its going to get. Cheers
Pitamberdas Amandji Mehta has a lot more than just Sagandhsagar Rose for instance. http:// edit: there’s a virus on their website. Besides that there are a lot of different companies that make snuff in India and most of the unknown ones can be found, as you might already know, on indiamart.com, for example Bombay Snuff Pvt. Ltd
Yeah been contacting various people of indiamart that’s where most of my contacts have come from. Problem is most of the actual companies don’t really want to do anything with exporting their products as has they have enough business in India. So I’m usually dealing with 3rd party exporters. Yeah already contacted bombay snuff and just like most of them, they haven’t bothered replying.
@indiansnuff: Are you aware of “Mandi” snuff? I got a tin as a souvenir from Rajastan some time ago. I don’t have the tin anymore, but I remember it had a picture of a cow on it and the colors were green and yellow (and maybe red…) EDIT: It was “Nandi”, not “Mandi”: http://www.21food.com/products/nandi-snuff-424629.html

Yeh it’s on the of Arora snuffs which I’m still waiting for them to reply back. How was it?

Damn, I thought I had a chance of winning… I must say I don’t quite remember how was it. Could have been fine natural snuff, but may be mistaking it for something else, too. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
@indiansnuff, what about ‘D.S Madras’ from Dhanavilas Madras Snuff & Company?
@indiansnuff, what about ‘D.S Madras’ from Dhanavilas Madras Snuff & Company?
@filek new one in me. Pm me your details for your tin. Probably won’t stock it straight away have plenty of other madras style ones planned but it’s one for the future
Another one that you might not know is Dentobac Snuff Powder from Goran Pharma. http://www.creampaste.com/products.htm
A small amount of TPS Madras black/brown will be arriving on Friday so if anyone wants a tin of that instead of the 7Photo for the “find an Indian snuff supplier i don’t know about challenge” they are more than welcome to it. @Filek another new one on me. Don’t get too greedy with all the free tins
Here is a list of bookmarks I have of Indian snuff makers: http://www.aroraproduct.com/snufftobacco.html http://www.snuff.co.in/index.html http://www.snuffindia.com/index.html http://www.sixphotosnuff.com/cgi-bin/getPage.pl?lang=en&id=1501 http://www.snuffwork.com/home.htm http://www.indiamart.com/pachaasphotosnuff/ http://www.snuffking.com/index.htm http://www.vartak-snuff.com/ http://www.umasnuff.com/index.html http://www.umbrellasnuff.com/ http://www.indiamart.com/saraswati-udyog-jaipur/ http://www.indiamart.com/41photosnuff/tabacco-snuff.html#himtaj-golden http://www.snuffofindia.com/ I assume you have all these already, and I’m not after any prize, but if any of that is helpful, I am glad to help.
Also you might want to get the contact information from @bakdoor on Sun Snuffs, as they don’t have a website as far as I know. When he ran Nicotine Rush, he was the importer for them.
Curious to know if you could just go to a market in any major city in India and find most of the snuffs available in the country, or if specific brands are only available in specific regions. @Indiansnuff, it would also be very interesting if you could post about the characteristics of the snuffs from each of the main regions. For example, I know that Madras-style snuff is often mixed with ghee, or perhaps some other oil. I think I remember that Gujerati-style is known for being fine and lightly colored. Be wonderful to know more about these different styles.
@Xander Cheers for the list sadly i have already contacted all of them. I thought Sun snuff was out of business these days? @JakartaBoy Yeah would be a nice thing to do, have to spend a while doing my homework though. Just wish we had shops like this here in the uk
For anyone that’s interested the photo i posted before is the retail shop for Arora Snuff in India, just showing how popular snuff is out there. Hope they get back to me soon. Here is another one with all that lovely snuff
Looking forward to sampling your wares, good sir
Next set of samples arrived today, the TPS madras snuff. One box of black madras and one brown. The brown madras is just what your except from a madras snuff, fine, dry and very strong on the nicotine. Has the taste of cigars. The black is very interesting, kind of looks like charcoal. Very easy on the nose not a single bit of burn at all. First smells purely of soot but then gives way to allow a slight nuttiness and the madras flavor to come through. Definitely going to be ordering a large amount of this shortly to be in the shop for when it opens. Will have to be careful with the packaging though as you can see below
I will be shortly doing a short review of all the indian snuffs I have and will be putting them up on snuff review
Looking on all those fantastic snuffs that are going to be available for a wider audience, makes me want to return to work on the classification of Indian snuffs. A hard task to do, since to make it properly I need to base on the literature from the times when snuff in India was tobacco for the nose - to keep the official terminology. Anyways I’ll put that on my ‘to do list’.

That’s something i plan on doing a well at some point, be a nice thing to have on the website when its finished. Gotta review all these snuffs i have first, speaking of which i best get on with that
Very exciting. I look forward to your shop opening. I’ll commit now to a $50 sampler set including anything I haven’t tried yet. To be honest, after trying all of the Indian snuffs I acquired on my travels, I repacked them in jars and left them alone while I concentrated on British snuff. Your thread here has resparked my interest. I got out the NC Super Special Snuff the other day to have a look and a taste. That one also has a cigar-like taste … or perhaps more like a pipe. It’s also easily the strongest snuff I’ve ever had in terms of nicotine content, but not quite as fine as snuff like Dholakia White or Sparrow, so it doesn’t burn the same way and doesn’t have quite such an intense initial impact. I appreciate high-nicotine snuffs, but this one is going to be for evening use only, it would ruin me for other snuffs if I used it all day. When I said “like a pipe”, my preference with a pipe was always for strong, Latakia-forward, English blends. The NC doesn’t quite have a Latakia flavor, but some tobacco that I can’t quite put my finger on that has the same qualities, something rich and earthy and chocolatey. As far as I can tell, either entirely unscented or with some scent so subtle and so blended with the natural tobacco that you can’t spot it.
I’ve found I have a love/hate relationship with the very few Indian snuffs I’ve tried so far. The ones I didn’t like I *really* didn’t like but the ones I’ve liked I can’t put down. Will you be offering small samplers for sale of the snuffs you will be stocking? It would make it easier for somebody not too familiar with Indian snuff (like me) to try some and find some favourites to order in larger quantities. I also hope you will be able to ship to Canada with no problems.
@crullers Most of the brand from the bigger indian snuff companies offer smaller packs (along the lines of 5 to 10 grams instead of the usual 50g) these might be a good place to start. I have no problem with shipping to Canada but it all depends on which card processor I pick and any restrictions they enforce.
Wow, that looks great! I sure hope you can ship to us in the US who are always protected by our over-vigilant government. Can’t wait for you to open!
You should take all the snuff spillage in the shipping packages and mix em all together. Then sell the concoction by the bag once you get enough. I’m very excited to see your shop open.
don’t know if it is still being produced, but Sun Pari is one of my favorite Indian snuffs.

Don’t think they are still going but I would be loved go be proved wrong.
I know ill probably get blasted for this like every other person thats brought up concerns about quality control, but i cant help noticing the state of those tins and box… if i was selling snuff and a supplier sent me something like that id tell them where to shove it! the 6p 66, cheeta and white elephant i received from mrsnuff were in a bit of a state, but i kept quiet seeing what happened in other threads. i have to say something now though, looking at those pictures… thats pretty bad.
Would you ship to Poland?

I would agree, however that was just a sample order which was posted in a DHL box and seem to have had a bump on the way over from india The tins actually cleaned up quite nicely to be honest. I have been promised the orders will come in a 5PLY box preventing this from happening. Of course for the stock my shop I wont be accepting any battered tins and will only be selling unmarked tins. Plus i think @lunecat would have a bit very upset if i wasn’t going to stock the TPS snuff after all @Viertel Yup of course First stock should be arriving in a week or two.
good stuff. i expect ill be judging the quality of tins first hand when you open
@firestarter0 it’s a hard job but someone has to do it.
Just a quick question to see if its worth looking into. Would anyone be interested if i was stock 1KG tins of 6Photo for sale around £30-£35 ($50-$57) ? Edit: If there is enough interest the price should go down to around £27, if there isn’t enough interest to justify stocking them permanently, but enough people want the same style (around 10 people) I can always do a one off order.
Is snuff really that big in India? I guess it doesn’t surprise me, but it’s interesting to think about. I wonder if snuff is on par with cigarettes there in terms if popularity. Indian culture is so rich to the senses, I bet their snuffs are quite an experience. I’m very intrigued about Indian snuffs and looking forward to the online shop you are creating. Ive always loved tigers, anything tiger related, tiger striped decorations, you name it… its just one of my quirks. So im very curious about that authentic Indian tiger branded snuff! Even if the snuff in it were bad I’d still buy it for the box. But it’s not available?

Yes snuff really is that big over there, but a lot of people use it to brush their teeth with. The tiger snuff is not available due it to being made from real tigers (joke of course). The real reason its hard to get hold of is most of these companies have a huge markets in India so they have no interest in exporting tiny amounts of their snuff aboard. I have tried to contact the company that makes the tiger snuff but with no luck so far. A few brands of Indian snuff are already available at the usual online snuff stores.
@Mario84 It may be german but mrstuff has a tiger style snuff https://mistersnuff.com/catalog/tiger-cola-p-874.html
Yeah, thanks, I have it on my list. The box is nice, and I could use it for other snuffs (because it’s original contents doesn’t sound to appealing to me anyway), but the fact that it says Cola on it is just too random too my liking. : P Do you think there is any possibility of you getting a hold of the tiger snuff from the first picture? Or are you sure it’s pretty much out of reach - so to speak? Oh now I see you already answered that.
@Mario84 well i’m interested in stocking it and the other brands they have to offer, however they don’t seem to interested to replying to my emails. Can’t promise anything but i am trying.
Just to let everyone know the website will be open in a few weeks after my first bulk order arrives, currently it’s in the middle of the sea somewhere. You might also be interested to know I will be stocking white elephant in their new and improved 150g tins. Will attach a photo of the new tin shortly
Cant seen to attach a file to an old post, so here it is, sorry about the poor quality
@indiansnuff OHHHH… THE COVETED NEW PACKAGING-- no bandages or Neosporin necessary?? :))
@general_desaix lets hope so. I don’t have the tin it was just a photo i was sent but it does look a lot better
Evening all. First stock will be arriving in the next few days. I will be posted on this site about my first stock giving a special discount to everyone here. Thank you and i hope you will enjoy the new snuff I’m bringing to the market
@indiansnuff Brilliant! Very much looking forward to your grand opening.
Awesome, looking forward to it!
Snuff is out with the courier for delivery today. Will put a post up tonight with all the details on it. Cheers
I am VERY hopeful that you will be able to stock 5 Photo Super Himalaya (Special and Himlaya also). I have not been able to get a hold of any in several years… I have tried many Indian snuff, and personally I think it is the best. I am certain it would be quite popular.
@NJE03 I’m trying believe me. Will give them another chaser tomorrow
@NJE03 I still have a few pinches of Super Himalaya left that I’ve squirreled away for a rainy day, its of great comfort to me to know I still have some left. Although 6P Kailash is similar to Himalaya and 5P Special is similar to 6P Special, Super Kailash is NOTHING like Super Himalaya which is probably the reason I don’t like Super Kailash, I was expecting something similar to Super Himalaya and when I got something that tasted very different I was incredibly disappointed to say the least.

I picked up a 100 grams in Tibet. It’s a nice, strong, plain snuff. Girl friend’s daughter has first call on the tins, she has started a collection of animal-themed snuff tins.

From what @SixPhoto and others have said, I don’t think it’s THAT big really. It’s mainly tribals who use it, and some small sub-groups of Indians. But there’s almost half a billion people living in India, so even a small proportion adds up to a reasonable sized market. My lady is a teacher at a school attended by many Indian expats in Jakarta, she asked some of the parents and teachers there about snuff, but everyone just gave her a blank look. One Gujerati woman lived in the same town that Dholakia is made in, she’d heard of it but no-one she knew used it. I went down to the large Indian grocery store in Jakarta on the off-chance that they stocked it. They had betel nut and chewing tobacco, but no snuff.
@JakartaBoy Indian population is estimated to be around 1.2 billion at this time,so there is a sizable market for almost everything. Snuff is not the most popular of tobacco products, chewing tobacco, khaini (snus),pan masala and Gutka (now banned.) are definitely more popular but nevertheless there is a sizable market for snuff. There must be about 100 odd units of snuff in India though I dont have the exact number.
@JakartaBoy Indian population is estimated to be around 1.2 billion at this time,so there is a sizable market for almost everything.
Whoops, sorry about that! I must have been working with data from 1960 or something. Thanks for the correction.
I would think that more people in India smoke cigarettes than use snuff. I don’t know, but thats what I assume. Snuff is seen by many as something old… outdated perhaps.Cigarettes are more “modern” so it would seem. In my own experience, I don’t know anyone who takes snuff other than myself and the people here. I know there must be many users, but I just wonder where they are. Also, with the Indian snuff, it seems to used orally more than in the nose, as a dentifrice. I can’t imagine how brushing ones teeth with snuff would make them whiter, but perhaps it does…
An Indian I ran into IRL also said something about its being used in tribes/villages, same phrase sixphoto and jakarta have used, I didn’t know much about this but I guess to go by this map “tribal” people in India would make up a pretty decent chunk of the population. Another Indian I asked about this said it wasn’t done much, but yeah like sixphoto said something that’s “not done much” in a country of over a billion people is still going to be done quite a lot in absolute terms.
7photo stock now in the country, just waiting for customs to give it the all clear.
Just wondering if there were any updates on the progress of this venture?
Yes, let us know, please!
I sent a pm to @indiansnuff yesterday about the same topic. I am such an avid fan of all of India’s snuffs…I hope to hear some word soon.
He hasn’t logged in since 4 April. Hope everything is OK.
Yes indeed - I knew it had been a while, but not that long, since he’d been around. I’d wondered if he was still having an issue with a card payment processor, which seemed to be a major hold-up, but he’s always regularly updated everyone on what’s happening. Hope it’s nothing more serious…
Hello everyone. Everything is OK here just been rather hectic in my personal life and the day job. It’s now all sorted so hopefully I can get back to the business of trying to sort out the payment processor. Thanks you.
I’m really looking forward to ordering from you if it turns out you find a way to ship to the US. I am really liking the Indian snuffs I’ve tried and would like to try some of the ones that aren’t available on MrSnuff.
Sounds like its not happening.
Sadly it is looking like that is going to be the case. I still am having issues trying to find a payment processor willing to accept me. I can accept payment via bank transfers for UK based orders but sadly that is it. I am very sorry to everyone that was looking forward to the shop, I’m not going to stop trying but realistically it’s looking very unlikely that I will find anything. Thank you
thanks for the update, @indiansnuff sorry the financial system is so tight-assed
This really bites! You’ve got awesome snuff that no one else has available. One could always go “old school”. I’ve no problem sending cash payment to honest vendors such as yourself.
Thanks for the support guys. I will be looking to still open the site, with the option to pay by bank transfer (or cash if people so wish) shortly. To be honest western union is a possibility but it does have a bit of a bad rep
DO IT! I hope anyone here who has done business with you wouldn’t hesitate to send cash (I know I wouldn’t). I’d love to help spread the word. If you could get White Elephant (in bulk, perhaps) and some other favorites (6 Photos?) that might help. What the heck–a domain and hosting for a year is what, $60.00 US?
What ever happened? Seems to have just dead ended.
I am curious also. @indiansnuff did you end up getting this website going?
Damn, if this guy could get the website going, I would place his largest order for the Indian snuffs which still elude me.
I think you have to refer back to this post:
I still am having issues trying to find a payment processor willing to accept me.

Thank you
And that was pretty much all she wrote. Jay from Jaxon’s had said he’d find it difficult to get a card processor to accept him for various reasons, so the whole thing died, I think. It was a shame, because he was so enthusiastic. I think the website associated with the venture was still out there until a while back, but I just did a search for it and couldn’t find it. I’m not even sure if he’s on the forum any more, although it would be really cool if he was, even just lurking…
