Hey folks, So a while back I had a good friend who traveled to Mongolia. When he got back to the states he had brought everyone little gifts, and he gave me a 50g canister of snuff. According to him, in that part of the world it would be impolite for a guest to not bring a can of snuff with them. This was way before I had a real interest in snuff, although I had introduced him to it a few years before. I’m working on my first big order from Mrsnuff, and would love to find that kind again, but I have no idea what brand it was. All i remember was that it was packaged in a 50g aluminum tube that resembled a huge shotgun shell, and that it had a red cap with the profile of an elephant printed on it. I know it was made in India and not Mongolia. Does anyone have any idea what this stuff might have been?:-\ If not, does anyone have an indian snuff they like and would recommend? Thank you! -Matt
@RainDog - Hi Matt, it sounds suspiciously like 41 Photo’s White Elephant to me… If it was pale, very fine, and had a slight hint of fish when opened/fresh then definately so! Having said that the elephant is fairly common Indian motif so it could be something more exotic - Good luck in your quest

Hey MisterPaul, Thanks for the tip, but it doesn’t look like the same logo at all. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find anything via google either. Either way i’ll have to give 41 Photo’s White elephant a try. My order is loaded up with English and German Snuffs, and it would be interesting to throw something a little out there into the mix. Thanks!
@RainDog - No worries Do bear in mind that packaging can be a bit irregular in India itself + who knows how old snuff is unless you buy it from a specialist supplier (with a frequent turn-ovr of stock). Indian snuff is a little ‘out there’ on it’s own: Snuff styles and culture developed in a completely different way in India, and has it own unique style and character, bold and colourful. White Elephant is a great snuff and very strong nicotine wise, but it’s not the easiest to get along with; the grind is extremely fine and it takes a bit of practice to stop it hitting your throat. All depends what you like obviously, but if you like German and English [dark and moist?] my call for an Indian snuff woould be 6 Photo Kalish; slighly menthol with a great, almost incense, type scent - I always have some in
What else is in your basket?
The tin sounds to me like those Madras comes in. TPS Madras has a white elephant with a mortar and pestle.
Is it an elephant - I thought it was a cartoon dog!
@RainDog - No worries

I liked whatever it was I had a lot. As of right now i’m working on a tin of W&S IHT #22 and a can of Carhart’s sweet scotch. as of right now i have a few things in the cart: Firbourg & Tryer Bordeaux (I’ve never tried a perfumey snuff, so this one is an adventure, but It gets great reviews) Firbourg & Treyer High Dry Toast Viking Brown (I wan’t to try a natural one with a coarser cut) Hedges L260 (not a huge menthol fan, but I figure it can’t hurt to have one around) Bernard Postillion Bernard Klostermischung Bernard Gekachelter Virginie I might be a bit heavy on the Bernard’s and am thinking about dropping one in favor of something else.
When it comes to other tobaccos i’m a huge fan of medium and full bodied blends. I love pepper, leather, and smoke, so i was looking for some similar qualities in the Bernard Postillion and Klostermischung.
@RainDog - Well Matt, it doesn’t sound like you’re going to have any real issues with fine dry snuffs if your enjoying W&S IHT #22 and Carhart’s sweet scotch (I find this one oddly chocolate; in a nice way). F&T’s HDT is similar to #22 but more ‘buttery’ so I’m sure you’ll enjoy that one (shushh… Nearly everyone does ) If you like leather type scents I’d point you in the direction of F&T’s Old Paris which is one of the F&T range that you can take pinch after pinch. Bordeaux is a good snuff, but it not an all day snuff for me. Hedges is one of my all time favourites, it is an old classic blend, but it’s also an absolute menthol bomb; great if you have a cold. McChyrstal’s O&G is a little more rounded in scent profile, with a little citrus, if your not a big menthol fan. Viking Dark has a more smokey and peaty scent than the brown. I’m a fan of Bernards Virginie myself, a nice German plain - Difficult to fault that
Sounds like you have a good plan going here though
I do hope that you enjoy your choices and have fun discovering - All the best.
@RainDog If you still have the tin you ought to take a picture of the label and send it to Manit (through the Dholakia website). He might know what it is and might also have something comparable to it in the Dholakia line up
The White Indians are popular in Tibet as well as Mongolia, with a few brands available there that I’ve never seen or heard of elsewhere.
