In praise of freshness

I received a small order from Mr. Snuff yesterday. [Side note to Canadians: it came clearly labelled as “nasal snuff” but the duty officers either didn’t know what that is or didn’t care–I didn’t pay a cent of duty] I went through a massive snuff buying phase about a year and a half ago, then my snuff use dropped off to almost nothing. Lately I started snuffing again, especially at night. The snuffs I’ve been using are all a couple of years old and none are vacuum sealed or anything like that. I have to say, there is a massive difference between the Toque lime toast I just received and the old lime toast I’d be using. The lime scent was still there in the old tin–mildly–but it’s practically jumping out of the new tin. The violet McChrystal’s is nothing like the dusty stale snuff I got in Ottawa (though I’m still not sure I like it). I guess it’s to be expected that when you have 100+ kinds of snuff they’re going to go stale and lose some of their scent. Still, this new order has me considering whether I may need to update a few of my favourites like Hedges and Old Paris.

This is the reason I properly store all my tobacco products in glass jars. I get bored with most of the snuffs I use. And have a few that are years old and still as moist and full of scent. Thanks to reading the experience of snuff users of the past . I do leave the F&T in the film can. But they don’t sit long anyway. Rotation is the key to complacency. And with the addition of new snuffs flowing into the market, I will have a life time of Tobacco products to fill in my burial plot in with.

I move over my snuff as soon as I get it into glass jars. Its amazing going back to a tin that’s even been sitting for as little as a couple weeks how much it loses scent. JAR YOUR SNUFF its for your own good.

Yes, jars are the way to go. I do have to say that I’ve kept some in smashboxes for years and are still amazingly fresh and moist. But others not so much so some must seal better than others. Maybe santa will put more jars in my stocking this year.

I WROTE HIS LAST NIGHT pLEASE FORGIVE ANY MISTAKES. mY EYES HAVE GONE BAD. i have a theory .Years back I decided it was time to give up the cigs. I tried everything. What finally worked was fresh cope and snuss. I noticed that after two weeks, the cope lost its buzz. I called the factory and the guy told me after two weeks throw it. Now snusss uses a differant process. It seems to take storage better. (I used to sleep with it in. Oh the dreams) Do cigars you have aged for five years have the same strength and nose they had when you first aquired them? I smoke a pipe now and I used to stash away tobacco to age it. i heard a well known tobacco man say after eight years start smoking. Two things are important. How you keep your tobacco and how it was processed. Over the years I have done snuff (nasal) I love it. About thirty five years ago, I aquired ywo 100 gram containers of gallahers Irish D made i believe in Belfast. About a year ago, I opened one up. Had it lost something, yes but its nose was still there. a sheer delight. I used to get my snuff from F&T and smiths. One order had some morlaix I had wanted to try. The gentleman said I would like it. it was very fresh. It knocked me flat. My snuff goes in the jelly jars Its the first thing I do in the morning last thing at night. Each jar has a little plastic thingy in it. it has that green floral foam in it… you wet it and then wipe it off and throw it in. a box with daily snuff gets the same treatment

@ELMOS I hope you used distilled water as to not add any unwanted materials. And too much moisture could cause mold growth ,you wouldn’t want that! HINDSIGHT is 20/20

that’s why, apart from snuffageddon paranoia, I will be buying all bulk from now on - freshness. I’ll buy tins of new snuffs ive not yet tried though, but I’ve pretty much nailed down the majority of my favourite snuffs. once you know your likes and dislikes, bulk really is the way to go, stored in airtight glass jars of course.

This is not a secret or anything. Properly store your tobacco and it’s good for years, potentially for decades. It amazes me that so many snuff takers are ignorant about storage, pipe smokers are much more educated in this regard.
