Recommendation threads are notoriously difficult, because people tend to suggest snuff that they personally like, rather than what the recipient is actually looking for. I thought it might be useful to start a thread where people can post the snuffs they are currently enjoying (and more importantly why), and also ones they have tried and not liked, and then people can recommend more accurately, based on the preferences stated, and also of course ask for their own. I’ll start: FUBAR Medic: my morning snuff, I’d say medium grind and medium moisture. As well as being a gentler menthol than some (e.g. Hedges, which I like but usually only when I’m bunged up), it has a lovely aromatic base undertone of richness that I really like. I gather it’s an Indian snuff. I would be keen to try others with that similar, slightly exotic note. I would love to try the base snuff of this one with all the flavours except the menthol. WoS Best SP: despite having to take breaks from this regularly due to it being so fine, I absolutely love the mix of bergamot and that earthy, grassy, almost farmyard-style. Great (for me) nic hit and when my nose (and to be honest, throat) is in the mood I love it. With this one, I often open the back door and have a breath of fresh air after taking it, it smells divine. Viking Blond: despite (what for me) is an unpleasant smoked-biscuit smell on opening a new tin, VB is a snuff I take every day. I like it because it’s so easy to take, there is very little drip or throat hit, it’s a great snuff to carry around in a snuffbox and take nice big pinches of. I don’t think it’s got a particularly high nicotine level, but it gives a lovely burn. I have a tin of Viking Dark and also of Brown, however they are too intense for me so I prefer the blonde. Does that make me a gentleman…? Abraxas St Casura: wow, this one is rich! I usually only take one pinch every now and again because it causes a massive drip for me, and the flavours are so intense. But I really like the orangey-countreau-chocolate thing going on with this one. I also have Abraxas Dragun Menthol but at the moment I just cannot get on with that snuff. I don’t know why. Toque: I’ve tried Natural, Original and Quit which were all OK I guess, but I preferred Best SP to all of these. Expresso was an experience I would not care to repeat. Other Wilsons: SP100 - nice but I prefer best. I’ll lump J&H Wilson in here too, and their SP No.1 is again OK but once again I prefer Best SP. It’s occurring to me as I type that perhaps I have actually found my top SP already! Tried Winter Warmer too but didn’t care for that. Other flavoured snuffs: WoS Jasmine - I don’t hate it quite as much as I used to, but I still don’t particularly like it. Gawith Toffee - I didn’t like this at all, it smelt like a car air freshener. Anyway that’s enough for now. If anyone would care to recommend something based on the above then please feel free. Also, if anyone else wants to use this thread to ask for recommendations for themselves, please do. Aah, this wonderful hobby of ours!
So I gather the way this works is based on your likes we are to recommend one to you? If this is the case, you should definitely give a try to: WoS Best Dark(due to your interest in other WoS SPs), WoS Sandalwood(I find it a natural progression for someone who likes both WoS Jasmine and Indian snuffs) and finally 6 Photo Cheetah (based on your interest in high-nicotine snuffs like Fubar with a light exotic notes).
Anarkali, Royal Gold, Himtaj Black, Special Naswar are all good medium/medium Indians with some menthol; and musk, attar, and fermented undertones. Seems like you enjoy SP’s? Toque SP Extra and WoS Tom Buck might be up your alley?
I’ve ordered small amounts of most recommended here - might as well take the plunge!
If you like F&T HDT then Lundy Foot would also please.
Haven’t tried that. Aren’t they very dusty?
I’ve ordered a selection of Indian snuffs as suggested by Ivan and Jim above, in their smallest packs to start with. Incidentally purely as an experiment, considering my three favourite snuffs are Wos Best SP, VB and Fubar Medic I made a blend as (approximately) follows VB70%/FB15%/BSP15% and so far I really like it!
@Jim Thank you so much for recommending Himtaj on this thread. It (and a few other Indian ones) arrived today and I love it. You were spot on with this one. Talk about a taste of the Orient!!! Not tried the others yet. I have yet to try: 6 Photo Cheeta, Anarkali and Medicated WoS Sandalwood EDIT: just tried Anarkali, love it. The system works.
My Fubar Medic is one of the first batches but to me it smells like Grunt with menthol added.
I haven’t tried any of the other Fubar snuffs @willc.
@Thunderbird if you like Medic more than likely you will like Grunt. There are some really good snuffs in the Fubar line, they are made by Dholakia so it is quality snuff. Some are a bit over the top like Bohica and Willie Pete but for the most part they are pretty decent. Snafu plain is quite an excellent natural snuff.
I think this thread (thanks @Thunderbird for starting it) has great potential for helping enthusiasts through the myriad of choice we have with snuff, especially for a newcomer like me who wants to try out as many different types as possible whilst avoiding those snuffs that I may not enjoy, take my first purchases for example: Samuel Gawith SP no1 High Mill I love everything about this snuff, the moisture level, the grind, the scent, all of it. Samuel Gawith Kendal Brown Original Now this little puppy I have issues with, I can see why there are strong advocates for this snuff, I personally love the grind and moisture & nic level. But can’t bare the scent!! I have already registered my opinion else where on this forum so won’t go into it here. McChrystal’s English Menthol Does what is says on the tin, great Lastly Toque Spanish Gem, Espresso and St Clementine I most enjoyed the SC, amazing orange scent! I do not think I will purchase any of these again though as I found the flavouring too pronounced, (think I’m more of a natural baccy man) and also the very fine grind is not for me as of yet (perhaps due to my green nose). So in conclusion, I’d very much appreciate some suggestions for something along the same lines of the SamG SP grind and or scent and or moisture. And perhaps a lighter more natural tobacco scented coarse/medium grind than the SamG KBO??
@NewGuy Thanks very much for your comments. I thought people would find the thread useful if people used it. My favourite SP is Wilsons of Sharrow Best SP, but having not tried the SG one I can’t comment on how they compare, but I’m sure someone else can. The only ‘flavoured’ snuffs I have enjoyed so far have been either menthol, or the Indian ones. I tried Toque espresso and really didn’t like that at all. It’s possible that the same issues you’re having with Kendall Brown might be the ones I’m having with Viking dark and brown. I’m not overly keen on the scent of either, and I find them both very strong. They strike me as definitely ‘smokers’ snuffs. As a result of this thread, my latest interest is experiencing more Indian snuffs. A really interesting area.
@Thunderbird, I will definitely look into some Indian ones perhaps the himtaj others mentioned here will be my first port of call, I will post my experience of your suggestion on this thread. Thanks
By the way, the SG SP No1 HM is definitely worth a try @Thunderbird
Thanks, will give it a go. I asked on another thread how it compares directly with Viking Blond.
I received a small pot of 41 Photo Himtaj Black today and all i can say is - beautiful. I echo Uncle Squinty’s Y.Tube remarks on this snuff, amazingly mystifying scent but the back drip really is nasty, although worth putting up with in my opinion. and thanks for the other suggestion of WoS Best SP @Thunderbird, really nice snuff. Herbaceous, citrusy scent and a good nic level, for my nose anyway NG
I’m glad you like it mate. I’m sitting in bed with a hangover at the moment and very much enjoying my Fubar Medic!
Hahaha, hope it helps
It did actually.
