Been wanting to try them…the toasts I mean. All this talk about them. I really like Toque Quit. If y’all didn’t already know. So I’m gonna order the Natural Toast. Please tell me it is nothing like an American Scotch. I like to “dip” scotches. I dislike them profoundly in the nose.
I find toast a little easier to take and no where near as smokey. I don’t find them smokey at all. They are no harder to take than Quit.
I don’t have much experience with them both… But from the little experience I do have, they are not the same, it’s worth to try them (: The Toque Natural Toast is great (:

I sure hope so…cause I believe from the dredges of my soul…that…that…American Scotches were never really built for the nose. I’ve been in arguments with people but they are a really enjoyable “dip”. Up the nose they are hell on wheels. The chemistry ain’t right for the nose. Yet who am I to talk?..when I have a hangover…I like to throw wisps of Copenhagen up my nose. Now that I qot Quit I don’t have too…but you know… I just cain’t imagine anythang better than QUIT but I don’t wanna limit myself. I figured I would try Natural Toast for my free can when I order 5 from Toque.
My experience has been with W.E.Garret Scotch. It’s awesome. I used to really enjoy it nasally. Then I further developed my schnauzer and I can just tell it ain’t right. I can elaborate if y’all want. It’s just so good orally. Try it that way. It takes a different technique but… Anyways…I’m fixin’ to order more TOque…and I wanted to see what these Toasts are all about. I want high nic and buttery…skip the smoky…should I go Almond? Help me out brothas…just post your Toast recommendation for a diehard QUIT LOVER… And I have no problem trying other brands…but historically they have let me down…
Toasts are quite different than scotches flavour-wise. There may be a hint of smokiness due to the toasting process but it’s subtle and not in your face like scotches are. However, I’ve only tried Bruton and Superior so I don’t have a large range of scotches to use as comparison. There can also be some buttery or nutty components in a plain toast. Toque Natural Toast is in a three way tie for my favourite toast along with F&T High Dry Toast and Wilson’s #22. I would definitely recommend ordering up a can of Natural Toast with your next Quit order (I assume it will be a massive amount of Quit ) Another one you might want to try is Whisky and Honey which is a delicious flavoured toast from Toque.
Also, I have a giant tube of Superior that I will never go through in a lifetime of snuffing. Will have to try it orally but not sure about technique.
I don’t think there is really any comparison between scotches and toasts, although I’m hardly an expert on either. I find scotches VERY difficult to take, while I’ve never had a problem with a toast, even when I was a beginner. While I like it, the smokiness in mosts scotches it completely overwhelming to me. Toasts seem to have some smokiness with a wide variety of other flavors. Honestly, I think everyone needs to try at least one good toast. According to our recent poll, these two would be a good (based on populatiry) places to start: Fribourg &Treyer High Dry Toast Wilsons of Sharrow Irish High Toast (No. 22)
Scotches are brutal and I like them,Toasts are less brutal almost smooth compared to plain scotches. There is plenty of nicotine in semi moist snuffs as well and much easier to use. As for the toque almond I say go for it. I like it and would get 200 grams if it was available.
never tried scotches not in a hurry. All the glowing discriptions make them sound horrible to me. Love toasts.
Agree with @basement_shaman and @Dogwalla… They are different, yet some similarities in that they are both fairly dry, fine grinds. The toasts though, as the name implies, tend to be toasted vs smoked (as so many scotches are). You owe it to yourself to try a good toast or 3. F&T HDT is awesome, so is WoS IHT #22, so is Toque, so is GH Irish D… Similarities, yet differences. Enjoy your journey of discovery!!!
I enjoy scotches quite a bit, used Tube Rose exclusively for a few weeks, until I tried toasts. Now F&T HDT and WoS IHT 22 are my exclusives. I mix my other scotches and scented favorites in everyday but for the most part I’m a toast guy now.
The only thing scotches and toasts have in common is they are both fine grind and bone dry, flavour wise they’re apples and oranges.
I completely read the Camu’s post wrong. I thought they meant they liked scotches. I would then second n9inchnails’ post, similar in that they are fine and dry, but they are much smoother and do not smell of campfires. Much better IMO.
Not all scotches are the same. Some are harsh (Bruton, Rooster) yet some are quite nice (Three Thistle, Starr). Don’t judge all scotches based on a few, the range is quite large.
Like @cstokes4 states above. There is a whole world of variety out there. Yes, there are ‘categories’ but an infinite variation within those. Sometimes note differences order to order/batch to batch. That is why it is appropriate to try several options before making up your mind. Good luck!
Some snuffs I only like at certain times. For example chocolate snuffs normal do nothing for me. However when they do they’re amazing.
I was only recently wondering whether scotches really belonged in the nose myself, after taking some Navy Sweet. It’s actually one of the milder sorts, but the sweetness seems intended for oral use, as does the intense smokey/BBQ flavors of others. Still, the high-nic content makes them distinctive as nasal snuffs, which I wouldn’t want to be without.
Well, if you were designing a tobacco product to be used orally, would you make it a powder? Think about it! Good grief! People of history modified a nasal product to oral use themselves because it was cheap and other social factors. Sweeteners were added later to make them more palatable.

Use them however you choose. They just seem to bbq smoky for the nose. Too dry also. Maybe the tins I get are just really old. A pinch in the cheek is pretty darn nice though. At least with W.E. Garret. The peach and sweet I tried were blah in the nose. Didn’t try them orally. For some reason I got it in my head that toasts would be similar to scotches.
Navy Plain isn’t smoky really at all, at least for me, it’s more of a smell of a nice cigar. I love it, you should give it a go.
Quite a few of them are not very smokey. When I stick my face in my 2 lb tub of Stoker’s its almost like smelling chocolate. Then there’s Starr which has almost no scent at all.
does anyone who has tried toasts not like them?
@bob I don’t particularly like toasts. It is more because of the nose feel. They are just too light and dainty. That being said, I do expect to get into them a bit more in the near future and my opinion quite possibly could change. After all light and dainty has its place.
so anyone that isn’t @juxtaposer?

Where can I acquire this stuff? I was looking around for it the other night and could have sworn it was nowhere to be found. The Stokers that is.
Isn’t Stokers is out of production?
Sadly yes, Stoker’s is out of production. It was only available in 2 lb drums from their mail order catalog, not even in stores. Although one member did report finding one in a store once that had gotten there accidentally. Quite a few members have a stash, but when its gone, its gone. Most people compare it to Navy Plain, and its similar, though I found it a bit more robust and flavorful. I think Superior is pretty close to it also. Superior is one worth trying; really good scotch there.
My two favorite Scotches are quite different, Levi Garrett and Square, the latter being an intense smoky one, the Garrett has an almost chocolate light smoke quality that I find pleasant, maybe due to burley’s chocolate-overtone reputation.
@Camu since you like Quit I think it is a safe bet that you will enjoy Toque Natural Toast. As time goes by I am able to detect the subtle nuances of different snuffs of the same genre. At first I thought all Scotches tasted the same but now the differences are very apparent. Toasts can be rough for a beginner but once you master them they are a great source of enjoyment and the variety to choose from is great too. Have fun snuffing.
does anyone who has tried toasts not like them?
I’m not crazy about them either. I generally don’t like the smokeyness, although F&T is nice once in a while.
Just try Toque Natural Toast. Just try it. Amazing that a snuff can be both subtle and powerful.
At the risk of oversimplifying, I think there’s three broad categories of American scotches: the hickory/BBQ ones (Rooster, W.E. Garrett, Three Thistle, Bruton, Standard, Superior, Dental, Tops and Square), the cocoa ones (Navy plain and RR Mills Plain, and Starr (which appears to be totally unflavoured). If you really dislike one in the category, chances are you’ll dislike them all in that category. If you’re on the fence about one in a particular category, then you might like a different one. My preference in the hickory category is either Square or Three Thistle, and Navy for the cocoa (though I haven’t tried Stoker’s).

Really? The Navy and RR Mills are Cocoa?
@Camu: Well, that’s how they smell to me–tobacco and cocoa, but without the sweetness of, say Carhart’s or Red Seal (which I would say are cocoa-themed sweets). It’s subjective, and no doubt some would disagree. Note that I forgot to close the parentheses after RR Mills Plain–Starr is supposed to be on its own in the third category.
