I cant seem to put down my box of Bernard brasil doppelt-fermentiert. I think it may be time for a schmalzler appreciation thread. Whats your fave/why?

P

i am totally into schmalzer and my big three so far are without any doubt: - Perlesreuter Schmalzer - Südfrucht Doppelaroma - Schmalzerfranzl Brasil Fresco taste and scent is awesome in all three and quite diffrent from each other. love it!!

B

The hybrid Klostermischung.

N

1.Bernard Aecht Altbeyerischer Schmalzler 2.Bernard Doppelt Fermentiert 3. Poschl Perlesreuter I use a lot of Perlesreuter even though I like a couple of Bernard,s offerings better because you can buy it in 100g bags, which makes it a lot cheaper than the Bernards.

X

For me: Best Bernard: Aecht Altbayericher Best Pöschl: Schmalzler A Best Sternecker: Echt Fresko Although I need more than just those three. @Nachman: I talked to Dave at Mr.Snuff. He can order bulk Bernards by special request. I don’t know what the prices will be.

N

Sternecker Echt Fresko for me, actually I think all the Sterneckers are great but I have yet to try the Poschl schmalzlers, Sudfrucht is the only one I have had

B

Bernard Aecht Altbayerischer and Poschl Schmalzler A Brasil are the only two I have tried so far, and I love them both. @ Xander: I would love to get some of the Bernards in bulk. I’ll have to send Mr. Snuff a message, thanks for the info.

B

I would use them way more if they didnt make my nose drip so much.

P

I’ve made me own Schmalzler snuff, very nice if I may say so myself. I’ve got about 50g. I’ve sent a sample to Juxtaposer. Maybe he can report on it.

Z

Ich auch: 1.Bernard Aecht Altbeyerischer Schmalzler 2.Bernard Doppelt Fermentiert 3.Bernard Zwiefacher

J

@PieterClassen Which one is it?

B

only ever had one (I don’t count zwiefacher) Sternecker Straubinger is like nose cake. That is such a wonderfull snuff I mean schmalzler

D

Another vote for Perlesreuter Schmalzer Walder-Fresco.

B

I dont understand why the mentholated ones are called half-schmalzlers.

X

Because you cannot mentholate schmalzler. You can mix it with mentholated snuff, in which case it is a hybrid or half (halb) schmalzler and half snuff. Zwiefacher is a play on words since it is a name that refers to an intertwinig dance of a couple. I’ve heard from at least one person that Klostermichung is a halb-schmalzler as well, and it is not mentholated.

B

Ohhhh, I really want to try Klostermichung, just because of the creepy monk.

X

Then you can put him in your avatar and creep us all out.

N

you need a better close-up of the monks creepy face

W

That monk looks like a paedophile ffs lol Stefan

B

That monk looks more like a priest. Thats right, I went there.

J

lol @ Brandasaur

T

ha ha ha

My doppelt fermentiert has gone dry, I never thought it would happen

X

Yes, although German snuffs are more resistant to tap boxes (a matter of months vs. a matter of days) they can still dry out in there. The good news is that they can be rehydrated the same way as an English snuff. There is a water component to them (despite them being oil based) and this can be replaced. I prefer the indirect method: nesting a bottle cap full of water inside a large tin with the snuff. This allows the snuff to absorb only what it will take, and also you don’t have to worry about purifying the water, since this form of hydration naturally distills the water.

P

I have had an intensive couple of months trying English snuffs. Lovely. I don’t think I’ve ever had any schmalzer. Would anyone recommend, say, the Bernard Brasil doppelt for a start?

X

Yes, you can’t go wrong with any of the Bernard ones, and that one is their flagship product.

W

Lol @peter. Everytime you say you have got over TAD it bites you again. Lmao it takes me back to when I was a newbie, it’s good to hear :-). Stefan

P

Stefan, You’re right. I just get myself fixed up and then I get this idea that there’s just one more I MUST try. So why not get a few others while I’m at it. I’m hopelessly in the grip of TAD. Have to say this has given me a lot of pleasure over the past few months. I must try that one good schmalzer and a good example of an authentic American scotch…here I go again.

P

The Brasil is not mentholated is it?

X

No. Only some of the halb-schmalzlers are mentholated (Zwiefacher, Weiss-Blau, etc.)

B

zweifacher is only gently mentholated at any rate, it makes it almost…minty?

B

seems like almost any scmalazer should be a good place to start. Never hear anyone complaining about any of them.

A

Bernard’s Brasil Feinst is a good starting point if you’re already familiar with snuff, otherwise any will do.

What I loved about the Klostermichung is how it gives my chest quite nicotine burn. Works for me. I’ve got tonnes of the 3 Poschl’s but am finding them a little sweet these days. Looking forward to sampling some Sternecker - anyone know where you can buy it in the UK?

P

I’ve tried several now. Sternecker Echt is my favourite, - maintaining that flavour. I don’t think you want to try the ungreased at this stage do you? I think you’d be hard pressed to find it in any shop in the UK. Mr Snuff delivers from Scotland. Service excellent etc, change the currency to quids sterling and off you go.

D

I love a schmalzer, but it causes instant nose block for me. Still doesn’t stop me using them every now and again
