So on friday I got two tins of some random snuff from this indian store. I’ve been enjoying them a lot over the last few days. However, today I’ve noticed my lung capacity is severely limited. I can only suppose this is because I’m a dumbass and have somehow been inhaling the stuff. I’ve been very careful not to inhale, but I guess I’ve just been doing it completely wrong. My question is: how do I snuff? And no I haven’t been smoking. Also, hello Snuffhouse.org! :]
I’m curious as to which snuffs you picked up! The standard method is: pinch some between your thumb and forefinger hold it for a moment fill up your lungs with air bring the pinch up to your nostril and sniff lightly with the last bit of air you can fit in your lungs PRACTICE AND REPEAT! it will get easier and easier.
The most often way I snuff is, I put some on the back of my hand, and give it a controlled snort.
I’m curious which snuffs I picked up too, but the names aren’t in english and the labels have already been thrown away. However, I should be able to find these again so maybe I can post about it down the road. Thanks for the input. I’ll have to try filling my lungs up with air before I sniff.
I am also new and suck at snuffing. I’ve found that just before sniffing I try to do a movement with my nose muscles and constrict my nostrils but open the bulb part of my nose and give a sniff this keeps it from going in too far. try looking down at something by your mouth and imagine a sort of eyebrow frown, then open your nostrils a little from that position. Porbably bad form, but it’s working for me.
TjG92 Try sniffing off the top of your thumbnail. I’m still fairly weak at pinching and prefer the thumbnail, as recommended on here.
@Bart: I always do snuff off the top of my thumbnail when I use tapboxes I find it to be much cleaner and less messy than off the back of my hand, but I never saw it mentioned anywhere I just figured it out for myself and it does work great.
I’ve been snuffing off the tip of my house key.
@tjg92:I’ve been snuffing off the tip of my house key. Not a bad way to do it (I’ve done it of a knife blade once or twice, because it looks badass) but I find that type of method —the spoon part of a pipe tool being another I’ve done — very difficult to regulate, and I am pretty good the breath control part. I can take large pinches/piles of the drier, finer snuffs; I take them from a bullet, and I use a schnifter daily with toasts. All of these methods were difficult at first, but I have pretty much mastered them with practice. However, the key-tip or pipe-tool STILL slays me out more often then not*. Too far, too fast, too deep! (There’s one for Bob’s thread) The method Pike Mopers described seems to be the easiest way to get your personal technique down and is considered by some here (myself included) to be the “best” method in terms of flavour and over-all experience, though I have been back-of-handing quite a bit since I started carrying a bullet. Some people swear by the lick-your-finger method as well. Also, try more snuff. The first few snuffs I tried, I hated. Stuffy nose, sore throat, etc. I only went back to it because I refused to believe all snuff was that bad. Then I found some brands I liked and rest is snuff history. *N.B. I have a friend who is newer to snuff who will use a guitar pick like your key. He also does the lick your finger thing. I am not if he combines these methods, but he seems to have found his groove. He takes VERY small pinches, though.
Wow Tom, something we have in common, preferred methods. Ken
also I’ve noticed some scents I seem to be allergic too. They always stuff me up and will stuff me up just smelling it from the tin. So definatly try diffrent snuffs. I think one of the reasons I like some snuffs the best is they agree more with my nose.
maybe give one of the mcchrystals blends a shot. I’ve found these to be easy on the nose and a good place to start am yet to shoot a pinch down my throat of their snuff
7 months, and i’ve perfected my method… wait… that went down my throat… 7 months and i’am still perfecting my method. Seriously though, i use the pinch method for my right nostril, the back of my hand for the left. Any deviation form the previous results in the above.
I don’t really want to order anything online and I can’t find any snuff around here other than this Indian stuff. I definitely want to try another one though, because although this stuff has a very pleasant fragrance, my nose has been very stopped up ever since I started snuffing it. Then again, I’ve only been using one of the two. The other one has a weirder scent that I don’t like a whole lot. Maybe I should give it another shot. Also, do you guys just carry handkerchiefs around everywhere?
@tjg92: I daresay 90% of us order better than 90% of our snuff online. Sadly, its the only realistic option for most people if you want to get into the hobby. Yes on handkerchiefs. I sometimes carry two and change them daily.
A handkerchief is a useful thing for anyone to carry. I started carrying one before I discovered snuff as I grew my beard out (long mustaches can be a challenge when eating certain foods, while remaining clean). As far as snuff technique, I use a czech pipe tool spoon: scooping the desired amount, sniffing, and repeating on the other side. Remember, practice makes perfect. You will figure out the correct amount of force to not hit your throat over time.
The tendency is to over complicate something that is very simple. Take a pinch the size of a pea, apply it to one nostril and just slightly insert the thumb and finger into it and inhale gently - you more breathe it in than sniff it in. Gently is the key word - I always say its like that breathhing in you do when you smell something good thats cooking - just a more shallow breath. With pinching you can be ultra discreet as well if you need to be.
I snuff at sucking… Eh…
Best thing about buying online is the choice of snuffs, and 10 to 15 pounds will sort you out a good selection that would take a newbie snuffer weeks if not months to get through. I’m yet to finish a tin and enjoy the variety as much as anything, a snuff for all occasions and all that. Don’t focus on just the stronger snuffs, some of the lighter ones can be just as refreshing as a stronger one, yet may be easier on the nose (and throat) till you find your preferred technique. If I had stuck to snuff I could get locally I would never have found the snuffs I like. Also, don’t dispose of the snuffs you don’t like, you may find that in the future you really love them. regards Steve
10 to 15 pounds of snuff will last you weeks, if not months?! Geez, man, how much do you snuff?! Oh, you were talking currency, not weight, haha. I’m a silly American. -David
