I bought ozona cherry and gal with apricot in Europe, both really good. I ordered silver dollar licorice, Samuel gawith bouquet and silver dollar scotch to try different flavors. I found that the latter 3 have a strong “oily” taste I don’t like. Is that common?

U

Oily? Is it ammonia maybe? Try letting them breath a bit.

R

Not ammonia, all I can say is heavy “oily” but I’m a newb. The galwith apricot is stringent but minty, the ozona cherry is heavy cherry. The other three are oily. I’ll give them a couple of days to breath maybe.

U

Just open, stir, and leave them out for an hour. That should help to alleviate some of the smell.

R

Ok, I’ll try that thanks.

R

I guess my ozona and gawith didn’t taste wierd initially. I’m new so I’m just trying to determine if there’s a difference.

U

You said that initially. Did you maybe take the licorice before the other two? Licorice and anise both have natural compounds that our tongues detect as sweet. You’re not actually ingesting it though, so maybe that odd sensation is what you’re interpreting as oily.

R

I’m going to let them air overnight but I’m not sure why the gawith apricot and ozona cherry Is so different.

R

I have noticed that both the ozona and the gawith are darker. Not sure if that makes a difference?

U

Doesn’t make a difference. That’s dependent upon the type of tobacco and the way it was processed.

786  What a curious thread.  I’m interested to see how it develops.

Forgot to check the new stuff this afternoon. Have to let you know tomorrow! Thanks for all the advice!

I’m?still?not?real?clear?on?why?the recent snuff I received is?so drastically?different from the stuff I started?with.??It’s?not?a?huge deal, I can always?order?more of what I prefer obviously?but maybe there’s?some?detail?I’m?missing. In order?to try?to identify?that I’ll try?to describe in detail how they?taste?to?me. So?the?Ozona?Cherry?and?Gawith Apricot share some commonalities?? they’re darker and appear?to?be?larger?‘grain’ than the new snuff I received. They’re both sweet, the cherry?really tastes/smells?like?cherry.? The Gawith has?a sort of menthol feel to it, my?nose feels?a little cold after?I?take?it,?and?both?are smooth. The?new?stuff?shares?some commonalities?as?well. They’re all lighter brown, and a much finer ‘grain’.??They?have?an?oily, almost dusty?taste that the ozona and gawith definitely?do not have. It’s?a?hard?characteristic?to describe to be honest. Some?of?you?recommended airing them?out ??they’re all in the little tap boxes, I don’t want to order?a?large?amount?of?anything until I know for?sure what I like. In any?case I opened the holes?on?each?cannister?for?a couple of hours?and it did seem?to help some but the new stuff is actually?much?much?different than the cherry?or?apricot. Right now I have a Silver Dollar “Scotch?Snuff”?on?me?and it’s?ok. No real solid flavor?that I can identify?beyond that oily?dusty taste/smell?that?they?all?seem?to have. It’s?not as?striking as?the the other two but there’s probably?something?I’m?missing. I’m?not?trying?to?belabour?the issue, just trying to figure the subtleties?out. I was?surprised at how?completely?different?the stuff I ordered from?Mr. Snuff was?so I’m trying to work?out why?that might?be?so?I?can?help?identify?new snuff I want to try?down the road.

R

Uh, that’s wierd. I guess if you cut and paste you get a ton of extras lol

Holy question marks. I couldn’t read most of it. The only one that I’ve tried of that bunch is poschls gawith apricot. I do have a bunch of silver dollar snuffs, but not the ones you have. When you get silver dollar fresh the smell is ammonia like. I never got the oily taste, but people’s noses can pick up different things. Just air them out a bit. As far as the scotch goes. I’ve never had the SD scotch, but other American scotchs are fine dry powder with a varying degree of smokiness, bbq like scent. Mr snuff stocks snuff from all over the world. Different countries and even different companies within the same country can have very different snuff. The snuffs come out different due to different tobacco and different ways of making the snuff, what grind level, moisture level, etc. German snuff like Poschls will be different than silver dollar, etc. Being suprised at the different kinds of snuffs that Mr snuff sells is like being suprised at how different the wines are at your local store where you buy alcohol at.

U

Well, if you want your natural snuffs to taste like fruit, that may be what’s wrong. Just stick to the fruit flavored snuff, as that seems to be what appeals to you. I think that Mr. Snuff has a fruit basket sampler, or something along those lines.

R

Yeah sorry about the text, not sure what happened. I’m not criticizing Mr. Snuff, just fyi, I ordered snuff I haven’t tried, which is most of them lol and they turned out to be alot different then my experience so far. I think my plan going forward will be to stick to the gawith apricot because I like how it feels, and the ozona fruity stuff, but when I order, I’ll order a small can of something I haven’t tried just to keep expanding my horizons. The smell for me initially wasn’t “ammonia” so to speak but it was strong and the scotch has definitely become more mild with exposure.

B

Put those snuff you don’t care for in a glass jar and come back to them some months down the road. Your taste may change by then and you may be able to enjoy them better.

When I first had toque snuff  reminded me of crayola crayons, now I don’t detect that aroma.
Poschl is rather an easy snuff to use and with the new EU rulings may disappear  from the market. So you best stock up.

R

Is Poschl a brand? The scotch I’ve had on me the last couple of days has become more mild, or I’ve adjusted to it. Still not my favorite but it’ll do until more arrives!

R

Actually basement_shaman, I can see where you get “crayola”, this silver dollar scotch kind of comes off that way

N

Yes Poschl is a brand, the very brand that makes Gawith Apricot and the Ozona snuffs you like.  And with these new EU regs coming they will have to jump ship to a non EU country or go out of business

U

Is Toque still offering to buy them?

R

Nooooooooooo! Are the regs just making it too expensive or banning it all together?

N

My understanding is they are going to outright ban ALL flavoured and menthol tobacco products, which would include the entire Poschl line.

R

That’s wierd, what’s the rationale?

5

To try to make tobacco less appealing to new users

U

@50ft_trad Spot on. Tobacco has been made out to be the worst thing in the world… It’s quite lucrative for third parties to stand up against a major business. It’s that whole “Robin Hood” effect.

R

Ok, so after having these snuff’s for a week or two they’ve grown on me.  Definitely need to air out but even the Samual Gawith Bouqet is pretty good at the moment!

S

If you buy direct from Roderick the chances of you getting a bad tin are zero I would think. And I suspect he also has a very good idea how his retailers are turning over.
